Title: Why is the front so quiet on Age of Conan?

It launches in like 12 days or so, and I've heard so little about the game, which leads me to think very bad things.  I mean, was there even a standard issue hype-building open beta for it?

I'm playing the beta right now. It has some promising stuff, but so far my thoughts are kinda "meh". The only MMO's I've played though are WoW and EQ2 and that was after they'd been out for a long time and had all the bugs worked out, and I only played them for a few months anyway, so I'm not really a good authority on MMO's.

Maybe it's because you have to pay to try the Beta?  I told MAF about it a few weeks ago.  You had to buy a subscription to Fileplanet in order to try out the Beta.

Some PC games have crazy compression.  They could probably fit it on 2 DVD-9 if they wanted to.

reading through the GaF thread, it sounds interesting, but i will wait a year for the stability issues to be worked out and the like

The beta is a 12 gig download that expands into a 26 gig install.

I think the problem is that all anyone knows about it is that it is MATURE and that it is somewhat hardware demanding. I think a lot of people also are playing the wait and see game since so little about the game from players has really come out.

There's also the point that MMO communities and places like EB/NeoGAF or even, to a far lesser extent, QT3, don't really overlap. Most MMO players play that one game and that is it, whereas we are more generalist gamers, if you will.

MMORPG's are like new versions of windows. Kinda sucks at first but after a year and few big patches everything smoothes out. And like new versions I'll wait until after that time period to play it.

I think what has also given me a bad taste about this game so far is all the folks who are bored/mad at/frustrated with WoW are constantly spamming the WoW forums with "OMG WOW IS OVERR NOW CUSE AOC IS HERE. ITS SO MCUH BETTR" etc. So in my mind AoC will be filled with horrible spelling, elitest dicks which isn't exactly the community I'm looking for.
