Title: the myanmar response to the cyclone relief aid is mind boggling
Post by: Eric P on May 09, 2008, 10:36:26 AM
25k people dead.

millions of aid dollars, more in supplies such as medicine, food, blankets and the like, and many experienced aide workers ready to go in to assist in assessing the damage, distributing relief, and providing assistance and they're just turning away people and have only allowed a few select portions of supplies to come in and they're not letting in any aide workers.

One United Nations official said he had never seen delays like this before in delivering relief supplies and aid officials. In Indonesia after the tsunami in 2004, he said, an air bridge of daily flights was established within 48 hours.

"The frustration caused by what appears to be a paperwork delay is unprecedented in modern humanitarian relief efforts," said the official, Paul Risley, a spokesman for the United Nations World Food Program, in Bangkok. "It’s astonishing."

He said his agency alone had submitted 10 visa applications for relief workers but that none had been approved before consulates shut down for the weekend.

"yes lots of people are dying, but it's 4:30 on a Friday!"

The junta doesn't give a flying fuck about their people.  That isn't surprising.  In fact, didn't they do something similar with the tsunami also?

I just think that nations should just start dropping food and supplies over Myanmar.

"Three flights were scheduled for Saturday but now we have no choice but to suspend food aid until the food in the warehouse is released for WFP to distribute it," he told the BBC.

"It is sitting in a warehouse, it is not in trucks heading to Irrawaddy Delta where it is critically needed."

I would absolutely dig up my guns (the big scary ones with three fire settings) and shoot anybody who did what the junta is doing about this aid. Fucking HORRIBLE.

I know jack about Burma, but there are ethnic divisions.  If the storm hit groups outside the junta's base of support, I could see them being in no hurry to help.

Perfect timing for the release of Rambo 4. You can see how sadistic the Burmese forces are in this movie, and why its an ass backwards third world country.
