Title: Donnie Darko 2: The Darkening announced!

Quote
Screen Daily reports that UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights for the $10 million-budgeted film.

Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct.

Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets) and Justin Chatwin (Dragonball).

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

The project starts shooting May 18.

OMG SPOILERZ AM I RITE?!?!

I actually liked Donnie Darko, but don't hold it in high regard like the rabid fanboys.

Oh christ, it's also one of those movies made for people to point who like to point out that it's written for 15 year olds to feel intelligent.  This movie gets more hate based on its fans and hype than almost any other.

Agreed. It's a good movie. It doesn't deserve the amount of hate it receives.

it doesn't deserve all the hate.  i said it's worth a watch.  but it's not great by any means.  teenagers make it seem like it's some profound, guiding light.  it's entertaining, but it's nothing special.

No Kelly?

Fuck this shit.

The first movie was great. Obviously flawed, but one of my favorite films nonetheless. No one could do it like Kelly though. Sorry. Only his mind could make it great.

This thread almost ALMOST makes me want to try and endure the terribleness of Southland Tales again.  Offhand, I can't think of a worse sophomore fumble from a potentially interesting director.

It just gets a little annoying knowing how predictable any thread dealing with Donnie Darko is going to be.  It's almost like people are embarrassed to say they like it, so they say they like it "ok" in a way that shows that they're "not a part of the problem".

I just don't understand why this movie can't ever be talked about without folks quantifying their level of like or dislike and comparing that to others.  Many of those weirdos who professed it to be the greatest thing ever have likely grown out of that phase...yet you guys just can't let it go.  :rofl

You need work on your reading comprehension, babe.  Or maybe you need to look at what I'm replying to first.  Did you read PD's post?  His post specifically mentioned the people who thought it was one of the greatest movies of all time.

I still haven't seen Southland Tales.

I will though. I heard it's somewhat amusing but definitely forgettable.

Donnie Darko 2: The Divergent Universe vs. String Theory IN SPACE

Quite liked the first one, and the DC.  He nailed a mood, had a great setting, wonderful soundtrack, well worth a watch.
