Alain Tascan, general manager for EA Montreal, has revealed that he thinks Xbox 360 title Gears of War has been overrated by reviewers - with one or two exceptions.
Speaking in a panel discussion at the Montréal Games Summit, Tascan said, "What is Gears of War? I mean Gears of War brings nothing in terms of innovation to the shooter... Like, zero. First Stealth Edit- Viz
"Only two very brave UK-based journalists said, 'You know what, Gears of War is a great game but it's like what Quake was a few years ago.
"Why are people loving it so much? It's like added production value, incredible cutscenes and the best ever graphics ever. I'm sure it's going to be a great success, I can't wait to play it, but let's face that graphics are still number one," Tascan continued.
He then used the comparison of a nice looking girl you might see in a bar and go up and talk to, "And if she's smart enough, that's the gameplay.
"I'm not talking about my tastes, I'm just saying, when you go to metacritic and you see a 96 for Gears of War, then you read the critics saying, 'Okay, storyline - there's none, gameplay is not innovative...' Then I say, why did they give this 96? They were blown away by the high quality of the graphics... Myself, I prefer something more creative," Tascan concluded.

To be honest i'm almost through Act 2 of the game which is 2/5's through the game. And i'm gonna say it borrows a lot from pervious games. Its heavily influenced mechanically by killswitch. While they did add a lot to it to make it a lot more enjoyable its pretty blatant rip. Same can be said for the Beserkers which are basically the guys from Re4 that cant see you but can hear you.
But it sure kicks fucking ass.

It's really quite odd to see a quote like this from an EA guy. It's just kinda rare that one developer knocks another developers game, especially when you haven't done anything special yourself.
It's like a rookie NBA player coming into the league and saying Labron James ain't that great. It's just an idiot comment.

many critics sure gave extremely generous grades to this game since of its pretty graphics
and also let us not forget that Epic and MS paid ceremonies to many media representatives and invited them over to play the game to produce reviews, that oughts to play a part in the good scores that we currently see all over the web

I said this in a previous thread, its more stop n pop gameplay and THATS FINE. The FPS genre in general rarely reaches point of formulaic evolution.
I just dont wanna play FPS games that much right now ;)
