I left the window open and had a fan on, but it looks like he's dying of a heat stroke. He's barely alive. I have him sitting on a frozen ice pad right now praying he can come out of this.
-
Oh no! Are there any vets in your area that will take him? I don't know if chins are considered exotic or not, but even a vet who really just treats dogs and cats might be able to do something. Maybe they'll give him IV fluids or something.
I hope he pulls through! Poor guy.
Edit: Everything I'm reading says to cover the ice pad with something, I imagine so they don't get cold burns. You could probably use like a pillowcase or a sock or something. (I used to do this for my cat, a water bottle covered with a sock, and she'd lie next to it.)
-
I was gonna make a fat joke by asking which one, but you're actually talking about your pet. Hope he's alright. :(
-
Willco: might wanna take it to work and keep it in the backroom during your shifts
-
According to google, a chin is a dog?
Take him to the vet dude! :(
-
Willco: might wanna take it to work and keep it in the backroom during your shifts
That's not a bad idea, if it doesn't break company policy or anything. So long as the back room is climate controlled somehow.
I'm reading all this stuff about chins and heatstroke right now, and apparently it can get dangerous once it reaches 75 degrees F. :(
According to google, a chin is a dog?
Take him to the vet dude! :(
No, Willco has a chinchilla. It's like, the cross between a squirrel and a bunny and is so cute and soft. You're thinking of a Japanese Chin dog, which is also cute and looks like it'd be very soft.
-
Only exotic vet that can take him is closed.
Right now I have him covered on a iced beef steak covered in plastic and a bunch of popsicles wrapped in plastic. Someone told me to put him in the fridge and leave it open. He just moved his tail - he is actually moving. This is a great sign. I really, really hope he pulls through.
-
I'm glad he's moving!
I'd take him in first thing tomorrow morning for fluids. All the sites I'm reading are saying that's a treatment used. They also suggest putting him in cool water. I'd do that, and try to get him to drink something. And pet him and talk to him and hope he pulls through.
-

Yeah, Japanese Chin came up in google (which I've never heard of actually). I've never heard of a chinchilla either, although there's a town near here called Chinchilla oddly enough.
What an educational thread.
Hope he'll be alright Willco. :(
-
He's gone back to being completely limp.
-
:(
I can't believe a dog/cat hospital won't take him just to give fluids or something. Hell, at this point, if I lived near you I'd come over and give fluids myself. I can't give them intravenously but I can do subcutaneously and that's better than nothing.
-
The closest emergency vet clinic is closed. What does "subcutaneously" mean?
-
Under the skin.
I'm sorry, Will :(
-
Blech.
Hope he makes it.
-
Oh jeez, that's insane! The 24-hour clinic I went to with my old dog just moved closer to me, thankfully. It used to be about a 45 minute drive I think, and my mom and I went there in a snowstorm when our dog got sick.
About the subcutaneous fluids: Pretty much all mammals have some loose skin somewhere on their body. Think the scruff of the neck in cats. You can inject fluids into there. I do it with my cat once a week to clean out the toxins in her system because she's in kidney failure and has been for nearly 2 years now. It's not as invasive as it sounds.
This is an educational thread!
-
i hope he gets better :(
-
I cleaned out a contact lens solution squeeze bottle and filled it with cold water - then trying to forcefully give him liquids. He really wasn't having it too much.
-
My gut reaction is that the fact that he didn't like it is a good sign, because he's still strong enough to care. Like if he were dying, he'd just let you manhandle him. I might just be too optimistic, but I'm still hoping for him!
How long until the vet is open? Hopefully he'll hold on long enough to get there, or maybe he'll even bounce back. You never know!
-
The exotic vet isn't open 'till like 7:45 AM
-
I hope he makes it! For what it's worth, I think you're doing all you can, and I think it's great you didn't just let him die. :)
-
I put him on the beef steak covered with clothes in the second part of my fridge w/ water and a cardboard area made from an old pizza box. I am sure this will kill my electricity bill, and I'm going to have to throw away all the food in the fridge as well as clean it out due to the droppings, but he is way more lively. I'll see if I can take footage.
-
Not working. Oh well. I was hoping that you might see if I'm doing something wrong. I hope he pulls through.
-
A few years back, I had a dog who died of overheating. It was pretty surreal; I'm taking the dog for a short walk on a mild Spring day, he starts breathing in the most fucked up way, and an hour later the vet tells me that there's really nothing that can be done, that his internal temperature is high enough to cause irreparable brain damage. Within two hours of the first symptoms, my dog is dead. That really fucking sucked. He had cancer, so I guess something just malfunctioned.
Hope it works out for you. Typically, you'd want to wrap the pet in lukewarm towels, and provide some form of breeze to slowly chill the towels down. Otherwise, supposedly it could backfire the other way, and the pet could go into a coma. At least that's what the vet told us. No idea how things work with chinchillas.
-
It was so scary to see him sprawled out on the top part of his cage. It looks like he went upwards on to his flannel hammock - which did not help heating. He was completely immobile and barely breathing. He didn't do anything when I began to move him. I really thought he was done for. The signs of life he has been showing the past hour have made me optimistic, but it doesn't look like he's out of the woods yet. I'm doing the best I can. These animals are very high maintenance and he's my first one, so I'm kind of driving blind here. I'm pretty scared.
-
It's really admirable that you went so far as to leave your fridge open to help him. :)
If you have a cooler, you can pack it with some ice and some stuff from your fridge. Maybe salvage some of your food, especially what was on the door.
I wouldn't know what was right or wrong with the footage, anyway. I'm just reading all this tonight. I've never owned a chinchilla even though I want one.
-
Good Luck :(
-
are you sure you're supposed to put them in something as cold as a freezer? you could just try spritzing them with water from an old empty windex bottle or something.
-
If you get water in their fur, their fur is so dense that they can get fungal infections. I'm not putting him in the freezer either - I'm putting him in an open refridgerator.
-
Oh wow, scratch the cool water idea then! I guess that's why they get dust baths and not real ones, huh?
-
He kept walking away from the cold stuff in the fridge and tried to waddle out. He's moving on very, very weak strength but he seems uncomfortable there. I have moved his cage to the open part of the kitchen - it's the coolest area of the house. I moved my fan from my room. He went right into his cage - into his plastic wheel. I put down water on the first level and the wrapped frozen steak in front of the wheel. My hope is that the fan is blowing hitting that frozen steak and blowing it on to him on the wheel. He is no longer laying on his side, though. I should take these as good signs, I guess.
-
Yeah, I got him wet while trying to hydrate him, and I immediately dried him off with a paper towel (the thing I thought had the least amount of heat insulated inside).
-
You couldn't have just got a cat
-
Heh, I thought about that. For something so small, they are very high maintenance. I would be so depressed if he didn't pull through. I love that he kickjumps off my walls every night. :(
-
I think it's really good that he's walking around! If it's an exercise wheel, I wouldn't let him run in it. Everything I'm reading says to not even let them use wheels on hot days because they can give themselves heatstroke.
I bet he makes it because of your diligence and acting quickly. :)
You couldn't have just got a cat
Cats do rule.
-
He is just lying in the wheel - not moving.
-
YouTube it
-
He is still alive, but very immobile. Not sprawled out like he was when I seriously thought he was dead. He's managing to stay on his own four feet.
-
Status Update: He's about the same. I had to move his cage because sunlight is starting to show and the kitchen will heat up real quick after dawn. I've been waking up every hour to give him liquids. I think he actually hydrate a little this last time. We'll see.
-
Hope he gets better. :'(
-
I've just got to keep him stable for like two more hours and then I can get ahold of the vet.
-
I have no idea where you live, but I find it hard to believe there isn't a vet available in your whereabouts (not saying you haven't tried looking).
Bummer about your pet. I just lost two recently (feline renal failure - it's common) so, yeah... :'(
-
Most vets are closed and don't have emergency hours. Furthermore, very few vets can take chinchillas. I've heard a lot of horror stores about inexperience vets pretty much killing chinchillas due to lack of experience, even with things like simple blood tests. They really are not an animal you want to take to just anyone. I even called the emergency pet clinic and they told me to pretty much try my best 'till the exotic animal vet opened.
-
Good luck to your chinchilla.
Do you know how much the bill may be if he needs hospitalization? I figure given how much medical is in the US, the vet may cost even more.
One of my cats was in the vet for three days; the bill came out to USD700. Ouch.
-
It won't be THAT much because he's so small, but I'm prepared for it if it's expensive. It might mean things will have to wait, but he's my buddy and it's my fault he's in this position (I am pretty sure the air closed my bedroom door - it happens a lot and I forgot to prop it open... he pretty much cooked in there). I have to try.
-
I fully expect this visit to cost in the realm of a couple hundred dollars.
-
...I'm prepared for it if it's expensive. It might mean things will have to wait, but he's my buddy and it's my fault he's in this position.... I have to try.
That's the right attitude with pets. :heart They can be very expensive but then again, it's a long-term commitment and unlike your boy / girlfriend / 18-year-old child, you can't ethically ditch them.
I hope everything goes well for your pet - and your wallet. :)
-
Well, chins can live up to eighteen years with proper care.
BREAKING NEWS: He ate a raisin. He actually ate something!!!
-
Willco is in ur house, saving ur pets. :bow
(well, his own apartment, own pets)
-
If he makes it, it'll be a miracle. I've been with him all night and done the best I can do. I'm about to depart for the emergency pet clinic. The rest is on him, I guess.
-
Bummer about your pet. I just lost two recently (feline renal failure - it's common) so, yeah... :'(
My cat, Melanie, is in renal failure. She was diagnosed in June of 06. I give her fluids weekly and she sees the vet every 2 months or so for bloodwork. It's common and scary, but manageable. I'm hoping she still has a few more years. :)

Agreed on all counts.
He ate a raisin? Yay!!
-
Whew. Glad he's still hanging on, and hope he pulls all the way through.
But jeez, sounds like a really high maintenance pet. You couldn't get a mogwai?
-
Pretty much.
He's been at the vet since about four hours ago. They said they'd call me when they could update me. No word, yet.
-
:(
He'll be alright, Willco.
-
Pretty much.
He's been at the vet since about four hours ago. They said they'd call me when they could update me. No word, yet.
I hope he pulls through. Did they give any indications on how bad the situation was?
-
No. Quite frankly, heat strokes are pretty much fatal in chinchillas. I went to like, twelve respected chinchilla care sites and they tell you how to prevent it, but really not how to treat it. Several said, "Heat strokes at fatal. The end." One said don't blame a heat stroke for killing your chin, blame a poor owner.
I am kind of thinking it's a miracle he's come back this far.
-
:(
They didn't say at the clinic what the chances were? anything health related on the internet can be sketchy since so many factors play into health. You tried your best though and now you can only hope for the best.
-
No, they didn't say anything. They were just going to have the vet techs take a look at him and take care of him before the doctor did. With high maintenance and exotic pets like chinchillas, I'm pretty sure they don't want to set up false expectations. I knew the moment I saw him sprawled out on his back, barely alive last night, that there was a good chance he could not recover.
-
:'(
-
:( Well I hope for the best, man. Let us know as soon as you find out!
-
Next time... on Animal Hospital
-
Got the call - Ash's temperature is normal! He's getting his motor skills back too. She said he jumped! They're going to hydrate him a little bit more and I can pick him up afterwards. She said I probably saved his life.

Are you going to get an air conditioner now?
-
Bravo, Willco.
-
Are you going to get an air conditioner now?
I look at a couple today, but most are the kind you need to install through a window. The problem is I don't have windows capable for such an AC unit and if I were to install it through a wall, I'd need my landlord's permission. There is a gigantic mobile unit at Target for $299, but that seems pretty pricey and I don't know if I can afford that after this vet visit - which I'm sure will put me back in the range of $150 to $200.

Glad to hear it, dude.
let's start a paypal fund to get Ash an A/C!!!
-
That's so exciting!!
Why do you need a landlord's permission to put an AC in the window? You just put them in and take them out. They're not a permanent structure. :)
-
great news wilco

Great news! :elephant
I was looking for this thread earlier to get the latest, but couldn't find it. Clearly thread title changes are enough to perplex and confound me. So glad I found it now. :)

Can I get deleperized
I know you can't make new threads, but a serious thread like this one isn't the place to ask to be unlepered. We're all concerned about Ash here, not forum/banning/lepering issues. Maybe a post in a WDYB thread with a "by the way, can I be deleperized?" would be more appropriate.

Some good news and bad news.
I got Ash a friend - a young kit named Rocky. Rocky is living in a separate cage until both can live together without supervision and Ash gets his strength back. The two did have a controlled environment meet and greet session, and both communicated wonderfully with another (series of chirps and squeaks). Rocky really likes Ash.
Ash has been rather lethargic since his return from the vet, which was to be expected, but then he started to show some disturbing symptoms. He dragged his hind legs on more than one occasion and was leaning his head against the cage bars. These signs really trouble me. I fear he might have permanent brain damage from the heat stroke. I am hoping a day or two of rest will bring him back to normal, but he is really concerning me.
-
Wow, this is an awesome thread.
I can't believe the chinchilla is still alive.
-
Since I don't know anything about pets like that, hopw hot does it have to be for them to get heatstrokes?
-
If the temperature and the humidity combined exceed 150, they can have heat strokes.
It's looking more and more like brain damage. He can't really stand anymore and he choked himself while drinking water. The he pretty much submerged himself in the water on accident. I had to dry him off and he's not putting up anything resembling a fight. I am not sure he's going to make it anymore.

-
No, the temperature is fine now. It's nice and cool in the part of the apartment I have relocated his cage to temporarily. He has a constant breeze from a fan. And he has ice packs during the day.
This is just what I can assume is brain damage.
-
This really doesn't sound good.
Knock on wood - hope you don't have to contemplate putting your pet down.
I've had to do so with three of my cats, and two times I've regretted my decision. It really sucks.

Keep an eye out for diarrhea. That and hind leg dragging were the last days of one of my guinea pigs.
-
:(
Willco am false prophet.
-
Good to hear about his recovery. Hopefully, everything pans out with motor skills and such.
-
Well this was a great way to start my day :'(
-
Poor Ash. :( You did all you could, Willco. I still hope he pulls through!
-
His motor skills are seriously compromised, but he hasn't had a full day of rest. I put out frozen water bottles in their cages to cuddle with, although the temperature is very good right now - it's not nearly as hot as yesterday or the day before (when Ash had his heat stroke).
Rocky is really feisty and he likes Ash a lot, but I don't know if Ash is really aware of his surroundings anymore. I'll take some pictures of Rocky when I get home. He's a lot more energetic and brave (very curious fellow) than Ash was pre-heat stroke, even. But he's also a kit and like, a third the size of Ash. I was hoping they'd be good pals, but Rocky is just too much for Ash at the moment, so they'll stay separated.
I rescued Rocky last night; the chinchilla colony he belonged to was starting to show serious signs of overheating and possible heat strokes. He was the only alert one and tried to nudge everyone awake. The pet store had no real air conditioner and they were stuck in an aquarium-like viewing tank, which is hardly cool. So I rescued the kit. He's loved every second of his new home and is very playful. Surprisingly social for an untamed chinchilla.
-
i'm glad to hear that ash pulled through and that he has an awesome playmate now. even if he does have brain damage and it takes a while for him to get back to his old self, at least he won't be lonely!
i hope that he gets all better soon :)
-
Ash is hospitalized again. CrystalGemini came over and he really started to deteroriate before our eyes. She was kind enough to take him to 24-hour vetinary clinic in Concord, where he will stay overnight - hopefully to stay hydrated and get a heavy dosage of anti-biotics. The doctor believes he is having a secondary reaction to the heat complications, and possibly in his kidney and bladder.\\
If anyone is interested in buying some games off of me and an Xbox 360 Elite in great condition, please PM me.

Nope!

I use my PS3 more, simply because I'm much more of a film geek than a videogame enthusiast. More importantly, I can get a better return on my investment with the Elite than a 40GB PS3.
-
Ash's secondary complications from his heat-related illness are too much for him now - his organs are shutting down. My options are euthanasia or life support at this point, the latter will be even more of a financial hardship. If they give him an I.V. there's a less than 10% chance that'll come back. :(
-
Damn...I'm sorry, man. I really am.
-
Jesus. I thought he was doing so well. I missed your update where things turned bad again. Sorry to hear it.
-
I sorry, dude. That sucks.
-
Damn. Just put him down before things get worse. :'(
-
put him down dude, keeping him alive will hurt him more than you
-
I am leaving to go put him down. I really don't have much to say at this point. I'll talk to you all later.
-
Poor little dude. Feel better, Willco.
-
Pics of him?
-
try to remember all the fun you had with him... you did a wonderful thing by giving an animal a happy life, no matter how long or short that life is. nothing can prepare you for the loss, but you have to look back on the good times and realize that he's probably very thankful to have been happy in all his days with you.
my condolences, i hope it gets easier for you soon :(

:( Sorry, Will.
-
Just returned from the emergency clinic. I got to spend some time with him before we put him down. He wasn't in pain, but he looked horrible - like a completely different chinchilla. They had him hooked up to tubes and monitoring equipment. He didn't move; he'd squirm every now and then and he perked up a little bit when I held him upright. But he was just deteriorating before my eyes. I was there with him 'till the end. I never saw an animal put down before. It was very gutwrenching.
-
(http://www.evilbore.com/images/ash6.jpg)
He was the best. He'd hop on my lap and watch TV with me every night. I just got him to recently dance for raisins. Then he'd get a sugar high and bounce off the walls.
-
Wow, dude. I'm really sorry. I could only imagine how I'd feel if I came home and Jub Jub was gone or sick. I love him to death and he's not even that interactive of a pet. :(
-
Was that a dog, Willco?
I love dogs (I owned one), he looks so cute in that cage.
Is that what dogs look like in Poland?

It was an exotic rat.
-
He's a rodent. People have killed the species for its fur.
They're remarkably social and clean for rodents. They can be trained to go in a litter box, for instance. They are small and agile and love to play. Ash would spend hours kick jumping off of walls. They have distinct personalities too. They're a lot more like rabbits than mice or fancy rats. But they're a lot more social and playful than rabbits. They also can live upwards of eighteen years. That's comparable to like, a cat.
I'll miss him. :(
-
Sorry Willco.
Borys thanks Borys
-
They also bark. Like a dog. No joke.
They communicate through barks. If Ash want to be let out of his cage, he'd bark and whine. Totally cool animals.
-
Whenever I hear 'chinchilla' I think of rapmusic.
-
He's a chinchilla. And a cross between a rabbit and a mouse and a squirrel is probably the best way to describe one, but with amazing soft fur. Like I said, some variations of chinchillas have been nearly wiped out for their fur. It's so dense and soft because they live in mountain climates and take baths in volcanic ash (that's why they take "dust" baths instead of traditional baths). I wanted a pet that would live a good amount of time and clocking upwards of seventeen to eighteen years, the chinchilla takes the cake! Plus, unlike rabbits, you can litterbox train them and their incredibly social and playful (rabbits are social/playful on occasions THEY want to).
-
Willco, how much do they cost and how big do they get? Do they have long, rat-like tails? I hate rat tails.
-
Depends on where you get them. Some animal shelters have them from time-to-time. There's a rescue shelter in Menlo Park that specializes in chinchillas. You can buy one at Petco, where they're anywhere from $90 to $130. The problem there is you really need to befriend the daily cage clean guy and be observant, because you can get a chinchilla that is unfriendly from abuse or unhealthy.
They can get as big as dwarf rabbits. So anywhere from 18 to 35 ounces. Their tails are like squirrel tails, but a little rougher. Here's a video of Ash jumping and stuff back when my room was a complete mess:

-
The new guy, Rocky, is really cute. Much smaller and more playful than Ash. But I will probably return him and the new cage I got for both of them. I guess I'm not really cut out to care for exotic pets. I feel like a terrible person. :'(
-
Don't return the new one, just make sure you keep him at the right temperature.
-
You got a new one?......
-
Can chinchillas get along with cats?
edit: Don't get rid of this one, dont' be so hard on yourself dude.
-
=/
Well just keep Rocky in a cool place. It didn't sound like the pet store you got him from was doing their best.
-
You got a new one?......
I got one as a companion for Ash after he was released from the local vet with a clean bill of health the first time. I got him a huge cage too! And treats! I didn't expect him to deteriorate afterwards. :-\
Yeah, I kind of would feel bad about returning Rocky because he was stuck in an aquarium-like tank with a colony of chins and no air conditioning or proper air circulation. If the windows are open here, it doesn't get too hot during the day, plus I'm leaving the chins with frozen water bottles to cuddle next when I leave the house during the middle of the day. They seemed to like it. Rocky leans his head on it.
-
you've learned from your mistake (of sorts), and rocky will be all the better for it. don't throw the chinchilla out with the bathwater, etc etc et al
-

it must be awful to lose one like that :(

OMG thats cute.

This is the new cage next to the old cage, for comparison's sake. And everyone knows that the old cage was pretty big:

At the bottom is Rocky, in his timber home sleeping:

Now he has woke up:

how much was the cage?
-
The big one or the little one?
-
Big one, actually both. How much is food per month about?
-
sorry dude. :(
-

Yea, give us infos.
And how hard is it to litter train them?
And can they get along wtih cats?
-
well at least you did all you could. it does suck that the pet's so sensitive to temperature.
-
So sad. Sorry, Will. :'(
-
My condolences, Willco. I know the searing pain of pet death. :gloomy
-
The big one was on sale for $149 - normally it's like $200+. The smaller one can be nabbed for $95.
Litter training is easy. You get a litter box pan and put their bedding in it. If they pee or poop outside the pan, scoop out the urine or poop and put it inside the pan. Eventually, out of habit, they only go into the pan. It makes it easier to clean out their cages, you use less bedding and it's awesome!
Food is cheap. They require some pellet food and timothy hay. I spent like $13 on timothy hay in January and I'm still using it. I have to buy a bag of pellet food like once every couple of months - it's like $17.99.
The cage and the pet are the most expensive.
You will buy bedding more than anything. $20 worth should cover you for a month or so.
Buy them raisins and dried banana chips - they love both. They also require stuff to chew on, but even a used cardboard paper roll will suffice if on a budget.
-
Oh, they require routine dust baths. You can buy plastic houses for like $9 or just use a plastic container. The "dust" itself is like $18 and will last you half a year.
-
And yes, they can co-exist with cats. This relies more on the cat than the chin. I've heard a wide range of stories (including horror stories) that it's best to use an adult cat because kittens are more likely to maul them playfully. As long as your cat knows that the cage is off limits (spray 'em when near) or you physically put a cage off limits, the chin will be fine. There are tons of videos of chins and cats and dogs interacting. Chins are very cautious creatures, but you can earn their trust. If they see a cat is behaving, they'll be more friendly.
-
Physically put a cage off limits? To a cat?
Do you have a cat, Willco? Nothing's off limits to cats, lol. :)
I'm so sorry about Ash. I don't think you should get rid of Rocky just because of what happened to Ash, though. You learned from your mistake. That's just part of being a pet parent.
-
Oh damn, sorry to hear that. :(
I don't think you should take Rocky back though. You made a mistake, but everyone does, and you learned from it. You seem to be a caring and responsible pet owner which is much more than what a lot of unfortunate pets get.
-
I don't think I'd ever own an exotic pet, just the whole idea of it dying because you forgot to leave a door open is scary to me. :/

yeah, you should be happy that you gave ash the best life that he could have ever wished for. he was certainly happier with you than if someone neglectful or irresponsible had him.
-
Sorry for your loss Willco. :'(
-
:'( Sorry g.

Same here. Plus I am violent and I know I can throw things at my cat without much harm if I get pissed off.
-
So sorry, Willco.
That video was great. For some reason I'd always thought chinchillas were smaller.
-
Sorry, Willco.
As an aside, I think we should chip in and get Willco an air conditioner.
-
:lol
Weren't you begging for PC parts, and now you want to suddenly donate?
-
I don't recall begging for PC parts, demi.
-
Sorry about your loss chief :: pours a 40:: :( How long did you have him?
-
Too bad, the poor fella. My condolences.
Did you bury or cremate him, or did you not have to go through that ordeal? I buried one of my cats close to the beach (dug real deep - dogs, you know) but then I found out it was illegal; the next cat that passed away I took to a cremation service. Both sucked big time, but the cremation seemed so much more brutal for some reason.
-
I paid for the emergency clinic to dispose of the body. I don't have any place to bury him, nor do I really want an urn. That seems creepy.
-
:bow :bow Willco :bow2 :bow2
Glad to hear it, dude.
let's start a paypal fund to get Ash an A/C!!!
Sorry, Willco.

I'm going to have my cat Melanie cremated when her time comes, and I'll scatter her ashes somewhere sunny. She loves to lay in the sun.
