Title: Is Deus Ex still awesome?
Post by: AdmiralViscen on May 17, 2008, 09:22:49 PM
I dicked around with it at a friend's house a long time ago, but I never owned it myself. $10 on Steam, should I?

Best game ever made to me. Hell yes its worth it, provided you can look past the dated visuals, wonky shooting mechanics, and braindead AI.

What's wonky about it? I'm cool with the rest, I have a Wii

The aiming is really floaty.

Yup.

Like all old FPS games, it's got some control and UI issues, stuff we dealt with back in the day but wouldn't tolerate from the worst shovelware now, but I say go for it.

My favorite old PC game.

He's even more used to that, I'd imagine.

Keep in mind that the first level is pretty much the worst part of the game.

It's not exactly cutting-edge anymore, but if you're looking for some fun cyberpunk RPG goodness, then Deus Ex is what you're looking for.

I've played it a few hours recently and it still holds up fairly well.

I played it through two years ago, and the only thing that seemed really antiquated was the UI. Everything else was still pure gold,  and it (along with System Shock 2 and Thief 2) is definitely still worth playing if you haven't played it yet. The plot, especially, is still somewhat remarkable for its degree of being "way out there" while still being compelling and making sense. And very few games to this date have done the whole " your decisions have repercussions " as well as Deus Ex did.

Another note-at least give Invisible War a try when you are done with Deus Ex. It's not a bad game and also still holds up pretty well, though it is clearly not the legendary game its progenitor was.

I think I'm the only one who liked the Liberty Island level. I played it through like a big crazy Thief 2 mission and it worked out OK (well, most of the time).

I was about to click Buy when my g/f signed online, I'll download it later or this week.

There are also numerous bugs and glitches, and as others have said, it really is just plain outdated. In some ways. In terms of exploration, made very rewarding due to the skill system and the richness of the game world, I'd argue that it's still fairly unchallenged. Deus Ex hasn't been the stepping stone I thought it would be, and that's a shame. You're given a lot of options in how you tackle various scenarios, and yeah... it's still pretty amazing. Although I wonder if I'd feel the same about it if I hadn't played it back in the day.

Keep in mind that the first level is pretty much the worst part of the game.

I liked it a lot, but not during my first playthrough. That was just a confused mess, and I had no idea what type of game it was. The second run, though, that was amazing.

I disagree with this, that it's not "cutting-edge". While playing Bioshock, I marveled first at the incredible world that the developer had designed, and then at how much of a step backwards it was from Deus Ex, which still feels like its pretty much alone in its class. Alpha Protocol, on the other hand, seems to be built on the "right" stuff.

I meant more in terms of presentation and graphics, although it doesn't look bad by any means.

The gameplay is still really good and I don't think a game quite like it has come out since.

It came free on a DVD from CGM a year or two ago. Good game. Need patience for it though and it looks like absolute ass by today's standards. Just keep in mind what year it was made and it's still a good time.

I thought it was a bit dated when I tried to play it again last year, but if you've never played it it's more than worth the $10.

Isn't there a hi res texture pack somewhere? Does it work?

My saves got corrupted at JC Denton's brother's apartment. I should pick it up from Steam and try to finish it again, but I don't want to go through some hours of gameplay again. I had a complete blast with it during my time with it, though, so go ahead and pick it up.

I'm not sure antiquated is the right word for the UI.  That UI NEVER seemed good.  Saying it's antiquated implies that it was at one point satisfactory.

Same, you are not alone.  I was stealth-focused for the majority of the game, and really liked the LI level.

Also, I definitely agree with the poster above who mentioned that the first level was the worst.

Liberty Island and Paris are the only two subpar areas in the game. Once you hit Hong Kong, the game hits "OMFG best game evar!" stratosphere.

Also, agreed about the music. Best game ever featuring the best videogame score ever? Yes sir!

What is everyone's preferred ending?

Im partial to the New Dark Age one myself. Im always down for pushing the reset button on all of humanity, plus Tracer Tong rocks.

It's not a fucking training level! The first levels in GR2 and Splinter Cell, those were training levels. This, is initiation.

I'd like to try this game out.  I take it the game will run on just about anything nowadays?  It might be fun to see how it runs on the Asus EEE, but a Macintosh version was released and I'm sure my MacBook could handle it.

There's a fix for that, search GAF thread titles for 'deus ex.'

The guy complaining was a Windows user but someone had a solution.

The game was great, and has one of the best stories in an FPS to-date. The boss fights are actually scary, and there are many ways to clear missions. It's a shame, but I doubt we'll see anything so well tuned and open again.

But not as awesome as the Hong Kong and MJ12 music that awaits after that.

I have to remember to buy this in Steam to replay it.

I lost a lot of my old PC games and with Steam my shelf is lonely now with only stalker, Crysis, CoH, and The Witcher.

I had this problem.  It's to do with your processor being very fast.  For example mine is a e6400 2.4ghz running at 3.44ghz.  There is a way to fix it though!.

First try a cpu slower like some of said.

Or

Launch the game, then ALT-TAB back to the desktop & launch the task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC). Find the game's process in the process tab, then right click on it & select processor affinity. Untick one of the CPUs.

or

open the deusex.ini in the deus ex\system folder and fiddle around with gamespeed=

it's strange because I replayed the original Unreal on my Core Duo setup lately and although the framerate was real fast it wasn't totally unplayable like Deus Ex was
