Title: Firefox 3 is smooooth
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on May 18, 2008, 06:44:20 PM
Definitely the best browser I've used.  Unfortunately, I'm stuck on dial-up right now so can't get the full first-class browsing experience.

Is the full thing out or just beta?

Release candidate phase, it'll be the final if nothing bad turns up.

None of my extensions work yet, so I kinda regret upgrading at the moment.

I can confirm it's smoothness.  My tongue just glided over it like silk on satin.

I really don't see any compelling improvements over Firefox 2.  It runs fine and dandy, but then again, I had no issues with 2 either.  Well, autocomplete is pretty cool, I guess.

the cosmetic differences between ff2 and 3 seems minimal, back/star button aside

firefox 3 has a few much needed improvements like the way it stores passwords, and the download manager is better though

What exactly is different?  I'm not doubting you, but I haven't noticed anything different.  Things appear to render at either the same speed, or close enough to the same speed that I'm not noticing anything.

On my PC, the rendering is much, much faster than with FF2. I click on a page, and it loads pretty much instantly. The loading was slower, and it seemed like a more progressive thing with FF2.

What is the star button?

How is password storage different? Did they bring back the password manager?

password storage is better in that it asks you if you wish to save the password AFTER youve confirmed it works

the star button is like an easier way to add a bookmark, it looks kinda like the ie7 star lol

I'd say there are enough little niceties added (new location bar, seems to render a bit faster, native theme support, improved download manager, full page scaling) to make it worthwhile, especially considering it's a free upgrade and all. It's not "oh my god they've completely reinvented the browser" or anything like that though, sure.

I installed it a few days ago but immediately got rid of it as the only extension it supported was Ad-block. No foxytunes, no fasterfox, no downloadhelper and flashgot, no google toolbar. I can't stand browsing without foxytunes and the downloadhelper/flashgot combo.

why do you need google toolbar when there is already a search box in ff/ie7 (you can change the provider too.)

I never use the google bar I just open a new tab and click on my homepage

1)The great and very handy spellchecker for forum posts (don't have to load a new page, just does it directly in the post box)
2)It keeps me logged into my google account and records my search history and internet behaviour for ever. Couple of times I've found a link or image again by going to my webhistory. It's also cool to see stats of my internet and search behaviour.
3)Online version of bookmarks is handy for when I'm not on my own PC.

I actually don't use the search box in the google toolbar and disabled it.

Foxytunes works. You may need to go right to the foxytunes website to get a compatible version, however.

Downloadhelper, however, does not work :(

Scratch that. I just checked my Add-Ons, and DownloadHelper said it would be enabled when I restarted. Sure enough, it's working now. I guess there was an update or something.

I've noticed a pretty big increase in java heavy pages. Very noticeable when using Web apps like Gmail.

This might work for your extensions until they're updated:

What distro?

In any of the flavors of BSD, Opera is the VASTLY better running browser in my experience.

In my 2 days with Ubuntu, Firefox was superior.

EDIT: Just the same, I've found IE8 Beta 1 (under the "emulate IE7" option) to be sweet buttery sex on the MAFBOX 5000 under Vista.

just disable add-on compatibility checking

then most if not all will work

these work fine for me: adblock, flashblock, download helper

ie tab is the only one giving me problems

edit: nvm it works too

For the new one to work well, I think you have to be diligent with bookmarking and tagging everything, which can be a hassle.

new one works fine for me despite my never bookmarking or tagging anything.

That might be why I do like it, as I have nearly every site I visit bookmarked and on the toolbar.

I do agree that it is much, much smoother though.
