First there was the Warfarin disaster after Korea. Now, this.
About 11 PM last night I started feeling a sharp pain in my side. I'd eaten some chicken wings in Nagoya with a friend on my way down to Osaka, and I figured that I must have swallowed a bone or something. Unfortunately, the pain just got worse and worse. Even more seriously, I drank a lot of water to try to flush whatever I was feeling out of my system. But drinking a full liter of water and not having to pee got me really, really scared - something was obviously wrong with my tubes.
About 5 AM I got sick of curling in the fetal position trying to fall asleep, walked to the nearest conbini, and said, "where's the nearest hospital with an emergency room"? The clerk found out, I hopped in a taxi, and I spent the next 8 hours enduring socialized medicine as they poked and probed to find out what was wrong with me.
The good: I'm not dying, and I'm not in danger of dying.
The bad: I have a kidney stone. This is a real vacation-dampener.
The not-so-bad: I can put off surgery/ultrasound until next week, once I get back to the states. So no out-of-pocket emergency surgery, thank Christ.
The awesome: Cute Japanese nurses feeling so sorry for the foreigner in their midst and the danger to his big American penis.
I am laughing about it right now but that's only because I haven't slept in 32 hours and the painkillers are still going strong. My next vacation is going to be to San Diego.

I had a gall stone and that was painfull, I cant imagine a kidney stone

I'm glad you are mostly okay. Did they give you enough painkillers to keep you placated for the rest of vacation?

My sympathies, friend. I had a kidney stone for the first time last semester, and it was the most miserable experience of my life (more miserable than poison ivy on my dick). I woke up feeling as though I had a bad side stitch, and it progressed to the worst pain I'd ever experienced. I tried sitting, laying down, standing up, running around, twisting myself into a frenzy of positions trying to see if the pain would ease up. Then I jumped in the bathtub with the water almost boiling hot, and that did actually offer some temporary relief, but only about thirty seconds before the pain returned just as vicious as before. I lay writhing in agony for about two hours before I hobbled into my car and drove myself to the emergency room (pulling over twice to throw up on the way). Never got surgery, but they did shoot me up with morphine till I was flying high. Still, the hospital bill was fucking ridiculous.
Just be sure to drink plenty of water as a preventive measure. Also, avoid soda and really salty foods.

That's definitely the case. Patel mentioned that he had chicken wings -- I bet the sauce was loaded with sodium.
EDIT: Third worst experience is when I accidentally brushed a finger full of Icy Hot to my nuts as I was trying to apply it to my groin.

yeah, that sounds about right. I took four baths and threw up three times. And I did the same thing where you act like a motherfucking contortionist trying to find a position where it just hurts a lot instead of feels like you're going to die.

thankfully i have pretty much stopped soda consumption except for the rare one or two on the occasional weekend.
water, tea, coffee are pretty much my staples now

I never want to experience this but I know theres a price I must pay for drinking Taco Bell size large soda for a good while in the past.

not this past weekend, but the weekend before, i had to go to the hospital about my kidneys. i was just chilling at home on saturday evening and then out of nowhere i got this stabbing pain, only on the right side of my body. it was in my lower abdomen toward my back, but the pain traveled to the front too. my first thought was "oh shit my appendix."
so anyway the pain didn't stop so we went to emergency and after doing a bunch of tests and poking me with needles and making me piss in a cup and then waiting 2 hours they came to the conclusion that i had a really bad kidney infection (there was tons of bacteria in my kidney) and that i would have to stay at the hospital overnight. alone!
it was more of a pain in the ass than actually dangerous but i can sympathize with the pain... it hurts like hell. when there is something up with your kidneys don't worry, you're gonna know it.

just as an update, I'm feeling better now and the worst of the pain appears to have passed (and I have those painkillers if it comes back). still the opposite of fun, however. thanks for all the support!

My Mom said kidney stones were worse than childbirth. But the last time she had one they gave her this crazy treatment where thy doped her up on morphine, suspended her in a water bath and shot soundwaves at it.
That sounds like the best time ever.
