Title: Age of Conan: Evilborean Adventures
Post by: Joe Molotov on May 20, 2008, 10:55:55 PM
The early game is pretty good, it's so much better than EQ2 or WoW (which are the only other two MMO's I've played at all). It actually plays almost like a decent single-player RPG, instead of just giving you a bunch of embarrassing tasks like kill 3 badgers, kill 4 wolves, kill 7 skeletons, repeat until your Lv. 20. Granted, there is plenty of that too, but there are almost story-line quests and cutscenes and stuff that are actually pretty decent. I played it for about 5 hours this afternoon, and got my barb up to Lv. 14.

And I like how there's almost no protection for newbs in the PvP servers. Once you leave the town, it's open season on your ass for one and all. Gank or be ganked. Age of Conan is a barrel-chested, two-fisted, manly man's game. :bow2

I have the largest pectoral muscles the game will allow you have on a male character.

I'm installing right now.  I looked at the pictures in the GAF thread and broke down and bought it.

I'd like to get it but I doubt I could run it very well, even on low settings from what people on the GAF thread say. I pass the minimum requirements on system requirements lab, though.

I thought he was unbannable.  lol

I HATE the look of this game, but TVC going on about maybe getting it has me tempted, im a dumbass.

Im really disappointed with Warhammers visuals too, what happened to that early vid I saw last year that looked awesome? The dragon ive seen in screenshots looks so EQ 1.5 :(

thread title should be age of conan: Evilborean Adventures

Warhammer is looking more and more like a reskinned Dark Age of Camelot right now than anything else. It's also damn ugly. I'm not sure what EA Mythic has been up to, but they need to kick it up a notch before release.

The game looks great to me (at least in the screens posted in the GAF thread on high end PCs).  I'll have to see how it looks/runs on my PC when I get home (I installed during lunch, when I left it was patching itself).

Awesome.

So can you run around naked naked or just MMO naked?

Seems that Conan should allow you to be naked naked.

Goons are fun at first but turn into monsters later.

I played WoW on Mal'Ganis which was the Goon's Horde server. They were great at first, but very quickly splintered into various subguilds, and pretty much everyone who was still in Goon Squad after the first year was a certifiable distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.

I haven't seen anything too bad so far. I've teabagged a few noobs myself, sure who hasn't, but I haven't seen any griefing bad enough that people couldn't finish quests. The resurrection points are usually pretty close, and the penalty for dying isn't too harsh (-2 to Attack, -2 Magic for 30 minutes or until you go back to your tombstone).

i do hope there are frost giants and i do hope that they will absolutely slaughter PCs

I'm thinking of going with Buubserella again, for consistency.  Plus in AoC I can make her live up to her namesake.  As for class I was thinking necromancer or demonologist.  I will go with whatever I think is nice at the time.

My game is patching now.

OK, I figured out my problem. For some reason my game kept reverting my shaders to 3.0 when I changed them to 2.0. I got them to stick with 2.0 and now I'm getting 10+ FPS in the city, so it'll probably be even better outside. Woohoo!

I made a character on Bloodspire, btw.

Perf is roughly the same, and DX10 doesn't look any better.  I am sure if I had a DX9 and 10 screen side by side, I could nitpick, but when you're playing, there's absolutely no difference.  It's definitely less than 5 frames difference.

Well I got to level 5. Thoughts:

+Uses the rest system like in City of Heroes, very nice. No more bread/water crap.
+I like the combat system, it added another layer of complexity to the basic melee attacks while still having special attacks
+Save points in an MMORPG? Yes please. Fuk corpse walk.
+Sorcerers are awesome so far. Shapeshifting! Flames!

-Runs kinda blah, I have most things dialed down tho, its acceptable and still looks ok
-I actually dont like the cutscene story stuff. I prefer the quick quest windows of WoW. I dont wanna have to read story.
-Enemies are pretty blah. Models are ok but kinda yawn. Conan mythos is kinda generic anyway. Of course WoW's first areas had crap monsters too!
-Loading takes a while, wtf

a screenshot of my mage, Vynitha. In her first, of hopefully many, demon forms. Of course I went fire!

Looks way better than WOW.  Blizzard needs to start updating their engine.

The devs confirmed that DX10 features aren't implemented yet so it's best to run it in DX9 for the extra performance.

I guess I'll wait a couple more days for feedback before deciding to get it or not.

Funcom is famous for their support in Anarchy Online, im sure this will be another well supported game

If WoW got an engine upgrade it would look better because it has better art, but iirc WoW engine is just the WCIII engine suped up

Approximately how long does it take to reach lvl 20?

dont look at me, im level 5. The first 5 levels are solo then you reach a town with people. I suspect what they mean is levels 1-20 quests and play are more linear than what comes after.
Title: Re: Age of Conan: Evilborean Adventures
Post by: Smooth Groove on May 22, 2008, 03:40:52 AM
How long is 5 levels?  I want to figure out it's worth $50 if I'm only playing it for a month or 2.

I wish there were some reviews already.  When's the last time a game was released without even 1 published review?
Title: Re: Age of Conan: Evilborean Adventures
Post by: MrAngryFace on May 22, 2008, 03:42:06 AM
about as fast as the first 5 levels in WoW, an hour. The first 5 levels are no measure of the time spent in the game from that point on. All newer MMORPGs reward the first 5-10 levels rather quickly to get people into the mood.

Once you get to Tortage (which would be level 5-7) you can do group stuff, though there are still single player questlines to do.  I guess around level 20 there is no more SP stuff.

-Enemies are pretty blah. Models are ok but kinda yawn. Conan mythos is kinda generic anyway.
i will have to disagree with your generic comment.

if it seems generic now, it's only through the dissolution of the original themes through pastiches, reinterpretations and the like

what i didn't know was that this takes place after Conan has ascended to the throne.  I was hoping it would be a bit before that.

what's kind of annoying is that the friend list features don't open up until you hit level 5.  so you have to grind out then get friend features.

also, this is a small thing which can be changed, the Q and E buttons don't equal strafe.  those are mapped to Z and C while X is crouch.  I don't know if i'll even need to crouch in the future.

Basically, you're stuck on Newbie Island until you hit Lv. 20. It's pretty fun though, like I said in my original post, I prefer the early game to WoW or EQ2's. There's the opening area where you play by yourself for the first five levels, then it opens up to the main island where there are three main dungeons, one fairly large town, several small monster infested areas, and one fairly big monster island.

Even on medium, I turn world shadows off.  The world shadows are very glitchy, and they are a huge perf hit.

I really can't get this to run in a stable manner.  Even on the lowest settings it jumps between 10 and 40 so often that it's jarring.  Even outside of Tortage (which is a guaranteed 12fps regardless of my settings), it's all over the place.

I can get my computer to run Crysis mostly smoothly.  There's not much excuse for this.

When I do the night missions, the game runs considerably better, and more stable.  Makes me think there are issues with their net code, in addition to their graphics engine.

Oh, I know.  I was just expecting that if the game was rough, I'd at least be able to play it smoothly on low settings.

I got it working well.  I have it at consistent 30-50fps now (sometimes it dips to the 20s when there are lots in Tortage).  There was an issue with drivers specifically with 8800s, and I followed the fix, and now it's working great.

I really like the combat in this :D

For nVidia 8800s that have issues, you just need to wipe your drivers, use a driver sweep program, clean out the registry to get rid of old keys, and install the newest, signed drivers (from like a week or so ago).  It's apparently caused by a buildup of random crap from old driver installs that nVidia never removes.

Also, the game looks even better now.  There are more particle effects than before, which makes me figure that it has something to do with that.  The game still hitches occasionally, HL2-style, but I am assuming that's a lump that needs to be ironed out.

Are you using Vista for this game?  I've been having a bunch of issues since installing some new NV drivers for Vista.

I've used driver cleaner pro but it doesn't stop Vista from restoring some old drivers once I reboot.  Which utility can I use to clean out the registry and old driver garbage?

i goofed off as a Something of Something that starts with an X and i spent my time doing melee and switching over to my demon form for bosses.  it was ok, but i would like something that is more combat magey.  heavier on combat than mage.

templar KIND of fulfills that, but i think that the skills i am getting now are buffs for spells i don't have (addition to my life tap stuff.  but i don't have anything labeled life tap)

i'm only 10.

Frankly the Conan thing feels slightly tacked on at this point.  it seems like it could have easily been any generic fantasy setting.

Nothing about it screams conan, BUT the Tortage city is REALLY well done and it does look like a small fishing villiage which grew from that to what it has become.

i love the amount of character customization.  i haven't seen any two characters which look alike, quite a change from doing Foppish Dandies runs where we all looked the exact same.  It was like the clone wars.

the combat is really interesting, but very hectic.  i have a hard time determining if i'm doing any good against my foe while juggling my own health concerns because i'm keeping an eye on my combos and the like.  i can't imagine trying to be a priest.

but then i'm only half way through the intro quest, so i don't even know what the rest of the game is like, but reports state that the homelands are "amazing."  with the degree of care which went into Tortage, I wouldn't be surprised.

and new patch coming to address some issues

yeah pretty much, there's all kinds of graphical glitches n stuff going on, performance is all over the place depending on situation, and the gameplay needs some tweaks IMO

Okay, not quite buck nekkid, she still has some painted-on looking thong, but as nekkid as the game will let you get. I think I'm just going to play like this for a while...

...this is cuming to the 360 right?

I doubt it anymore.  MS is starting to really dropen ze ball in the past year or so.

This is way too keyboardy for console release, and I doubt MS would let them release a 20+ gig install game.

I get a lot of texture pop-ups. Generally when I'm in town.

update your drivers and you should be fine.

the game is absolutely amazing looking.

i can run it 70 fps with everything but shadows and bloom maxed out.

the gameplay i am warming to

the lack of an overworld is...odd.  what's the point of a mount?

i have never had any patching issues with this game so i can't speak to that.

odd.

you have an idea of what you want to do for a class?

one thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing really resembling a typical mage character if you like them.

Dark Templar is probably my fave.  it's a healing/buff tank.  kind of like a paladin but without direct healing spells.  it's healing based on your damage output.

well it's not really too steeped in the lore.

it's more like they plugged in some names instead of really concentrating on making it inclusive of Howard's universe.

if you go into interface options, you can turn on side bars which you can then drag to anywhere you like.

the first 20 levels with the Tortage are really great but having to re-do it for EACH character is a bit of a pain in the ass.

maf is absolutely insane

the Heralds are a FUN class.  i think his issue is that he was playing it, or expecting it to play like a traditional mage, when it's really, really not.

it's a damn blast to play as you just wade through soldier after soldier

No, I was going to but I ended up waiting too long so I missed out on the free Drinking Cape and War Rhinos.

I must admit, this is a sentence, a string of words I never expected to encounter in this lifetime.

i am probably the only person having a great deal of fun with this game on this forum.

i just took my second character to the 22nd level today.  I think i'm going to stick w/ the HoX.  Great fun.  Total combat mage which doesn't skimp on the combat.

My brother just got this game. Should I create a character on his PC, or just steal his CoD4 disk now that he's finally not playing it anymore?

I blind-bougth this game, it's pretty neat so far, I'm a level 9 Guardian, and for some reasons my dude is wearing a woman skirt. It's kind of unsettling but i'm enjoying this.

hah-hahhhhh... on me I guess. I'm putting it in as per examples on Simple Machines forum examples given for the plugin; minus the spaces below, it consists of the following. The dimensions were added into the markup by the plugin. Not sure what else to do about it:

It is a mage, that cannot wear light armor, that CAN wield a two-handed sword. There are so many ISSUES with that.

Regardless im cancelling my account and pre-ordering Warhammer.
