Title: Got my new ear phones!
Post by: MrAngryFace on May 20, 2008, 11:14:03 PM
Well I finally got these today:

+Look snazzy
+nylon cord
+ear clips snap on easily
+good bass
+fairly comfortable
+work fine even with glasses, tho I suspect glasses that wrap around the back of the ear more would have problems

-feels like theyre never close enough to my ear, overall sound is sometimes not as full as I would like unless they are snug, which requires a bit of work
-fragile, can't just carry these around, you get a carrying case with them, a nice one

I used to have these:

which despite ratings I see everywhere, are some of my favorite ear buds ever. I suspect my 'never close enough' complaint has more to do with being used to the feeling of sound being pumped straight into my ear. Ear clips have always been kinda weird, we'll see if I adjust over time.

Those look good for traveling around but I'm a total closed full-sized headphones junkie when it comes to being at home. Its the reason why I kind of want to get Sennheiser 595s to compliment the open ones I have now.

Why'd you go for this type instead of the inner ear ones?

ear buds tend to fall out when im moving my jaw or if im exercising.

As long as we're showing off new purchases, I am enjoying my new camera.  It's got an improved steady shot and settings for bringing out details that would otherwise be lost in shadows, so it's excellent for shooting in bad light:

I wish I had like 20 of them, though I do not know why.

A replacement for my DSC-W200.  Luckily that DSC-W300 just came out like a month ago.  It's like my W200 SMASHED IN MY POCKET right on cue.

The W200, for comparison:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSCW200-Digital-Optical/dp/B000M4MLSS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1211351234&sr=1-4

I know I have a lot of cameras, but the W200 was with me all the time, so replacing it quickly was a big priority.  It (and the W300) are tiny, high resolution, feature packed, take good video, and have great battery life.

Here's a pic I took with the W300 yesterday.  it's a little out of focus, but that's not a surprise considering the subject matter:

Is that your own eye?

That level of detail is amazing for a $300 camera.

Jesus christ at the eye shot. P&S are good at closeup/macro shots but thats just fantastic. I may look into that particular camera when I really get tired of lugging my XT around.

Also...

Quote from: Amazon description of the W300
W300 is powered with Smile Shutter technology to capture smile the moment they happen, Face Detection to capture faces clearly

:lol

Only Sony would come up with something so weirdly useful as this

Ear buds and 'inner ear' earphones are very different things. If it falls out of your ear, it's not an inner ear earphone. And therefore shit.

Canon has it but it doesn't have a stupid name. I have whatever theirs is called on my new Ixy. You see these cool green boxes tracking faces around and I think the lens focuses on that area automatically.

Face tracking for sure but the smiling stuff? Kudos to Canon if they've got the same thing since thats a nice function. It is true that Sony comes up with distinguished mentally-challenged names for these stuff though :lol

It's really not that much of an extension of face tracking, if you think about it.  It's just determining if a prominent facial feature is curving in a specific way.  There's even a setting to customize how big of a smile it has to be.

Wait, you mean it automatically takes the picture when the smile gets to a certain size? That is absolutely crazy :lol I wonder what happens when there are two or more people in the pick. Does it make sure everyone is smiling or just more than half the people?

Haha, it gets even crazier.  Normally, as per facial tracking features, it focuses on the face you are focusing on.  HOWEVER, for both smile and face detection, there is an Adult and Child priority modes, and there are two more but I forget what they are because I don't use them.

I question the use of such a feature, but under my (albeit limited) testing, it works.  It's kind of like setting a timer, except instead of a time limit, the picture isn't taken until you goddamned smile.

I have the Cherry wood ones, and while I like them for walking around the neighborhood, sitting in a cafe, workouts, etc, they just can't hold up against the noise of the NY subway on my commute to and from work.

I thought these could replace constantly rebuying Shures--since the cords keep fraying on them (last pair were Shure SE110s from Sept)--but I'll need to get a pair just for the subway it seems.  Might try a non-Shure earbud tho; any suggestions?

Have you tried Sony noise-canceling earbuds?  I can't speak for how well they would work on a noisy subway, but for me, they worked so well that I'm now too nervous to use them.  It's like they really seal you off from the rest of the world, and you don't even have to crank them to high volume in order to block out noise.  You can listen to music at a reasonable volume without outside noise interruptions.

That would freak me out, I need some audio feedback when I'm outside.

I love the phillips buds just because the bass is so great, but the cords on those suck too, I wish they all went to this nylon cord stuff.

Earbuds in general really close a person off, earphones really dont.

Shures are really good for sound isolation; they have these foam plugs that shape to the ear canal or whatever, and you can't really hear anything except your own uh... head noises.  It does get a little freaky, but I need it during my commute; sometimes I'll just have them in with nothing playing, so I don't have to listen to screeching wheels, musicians, homeland security announcements, beggars, etc.

Audio-Technica makes good stuff, I have a sweet condenser mic from them.  :rock

Well I just went for a walk with these on, and despite everything they actually overpower the sound around me enough for me not to mind. I also enjoy them not falling out once in a while or having to buy new earbud replacements. I like em a lot!
