I never thought I would see a game on a Sony platform that rivaled Nintendo's ability to develop a game with the sole intent of manipulating its braindead fan-base. Everything of merit in the game exists so that the fans are completely blind to the deception squaresoft calls 'gameplay'. Periods of button mashing and stat gambling followed by pretty cutscenes make up an experience only surpassed by 24 hours in a filthy local casino.
Fuck you squaresoft. fuck the stupid UMD case I got, fuck the hour I wasted running through a maze mashing x, hell, fuck the gambit system while im at it.
-
should have pirated it.

FFX-2
Killzone
Uncharted

Crisis Core is not very good.
I am no hater of FF7, I actually quite like the game, but playing through Crisis Core is a test in how much time you can spend doing things you know aren't fun before either realizing you are spending precious time that could be used to swallow various kinds of flash memory.
-
Crisis Core is worse than everything on that list, for the reason I stated in the original post. They didnt say hey here's some nice graphics, and lets make the gameplay good. They said, hey here's some nice graphics, hope its enough to hide the bullshit game.
Killzone was just a bad game, but there was gameplay.
Uncharted ISNT that bad a game
FFX-2 had a gameplay system, I just didnt appreciate it

The worst part is in that very first hour in the temple, when you kill the people and they go oh there's hidden walls, and then they go oh they're towers and it turns into glorified hide n seek with button mashing and an absolutely mindless boss fight
-

Same battle designer though (Takatsugu Nakazawa)

The worst part about all that is despite it being incredibly boring to do, your reward for it is watching Zack dream about taking it in the butt from Angiel and Sephiroth at the same time.

haha

He dialed it in this time.
-
I didn't think FFX-2's job/battle system was that bad. It would have been decent had the game not been so damn easy. If they actually enforced a challenge and made you really think about the classes you're using then it could've been more fun to use.

why play crisis core
everyone knows how it ends

luminous arc > crisis core

I wish Enix could branch off and join up with Mistwalker to become Mistwalker Enix, then make sweet ass Dragon Quest games and all types of other cool shit too.
Square can rot in hell, after they finish KH.
I don't think you can be more wrong. Enix is the reason Square is a piece of shit now. Enix is like the fucking king of milking franchises to death, and as soon as they hopped on Square, it was all of two seconds before spin-offs came flying out of every orifice. Enix needs to fuck off so Square can go back to making a Chrono Trigger and Einhander sequel.

I agree. Enix had some amazing studios back in the SNES days. Quintet and Tri-Ace :rock

3 games in eight years, tho, since VP1 was just a port. Compare that to the FF games and that's hardly running a series in the ground.

the thought that counts.

VP8 was the best

VP is shit series anyway. Final Fantasy > VP
-
VP2 was amazing, its battlesystem > all FF games
-
Still haven't popped in VP2. VP1 had a pretty fun battle system, too.
-
VP2's is better, they actually made it BETTER! and in 3D!
I actually beat VP2, its that awesome

I remember. Wasn't it your GOTY two years ago?

Even with the terrible DQ spinoffs, Enix >>> Square. Enix has always been solely a publisher anyways.
Valkyrie Profile (tri-ace I know, but has always been published by Enix) >>>> anything Square has ever done, ever
-
VP2 was amazing, its battlesystem > all FF games
VP2 was good, but I will not give it any credit for its battlesystem.
The RPG battlesystem was perfected in 2000 with Grandia 2. Any RPG made after 2000 that isn't using the Grandia battle system is just the developer being stubborn and not admitting defeat.

OMG youre on crack

no, VP2s battle system was the best right down to the sphere system

Grandia Xtreme was still using the Grandia 2 battle system...basically.
-
only improved, and with a level of challenge
-
Agreed.
maybe perfected was not the best wording, but that is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the battle system in Grandia 2.

Please tell me what Enix games have been run into the ground since 2003.
Hey, I whole-heartedly agree that Enix is well off now that they're pooling resources from Square, but where does that leave Square and all its once-loyal fans (i.e. me)? In the fucking shithole, that's where. Now I'm stuck with Final Fantasy VII: Project Overdrive Part Deux, or Final Fantasy XIII Crystalis Omega Launch, or Chocobo Kart Racing Dating Sim XIV. The Enix merger has officially crippled Square's creative department.
-
Oh yeah, milking the cash cow for square is totally Enix's fault. Curse you Enix, how dare you make 100 million years of Final Fantasy 7 and rot in hell for making the poor, fragile, Squaresoft think its a good idea to make 40 diffrent versions/spin-offs of Final Fantasy 13.
Oh and a huge Fuck You for making them make Dawn of Mana. Seriously Enix, its all your fault :maf
Good job victimizing yourself you milky dickcheese eater. Look at my post, look at it. Now reeeeead it carefully. Lemme help.
The Enix merger has officially crippled Square's creative department.
See it now? Do you? I'm not blaming Enix, but since the merger, Square has done nothing but spin-offs, and that's what I'm griping about. Enix is a great company, the DQ games are awesome, but ever since they absorbed Square, not much originality has been coming out of them.
-
Square hasnt been original since back in the PSOne days when their last gasp of original thought errupted with titles like Einhander and Xenogears.
Since then theyve falling into the same fucking pattern of useless FF games and spin offs. Square can do no evil with some people, its ridiculous
-

Yep.
Along with the games you mentioned--Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade 1 and 2, Ergheiz, Tobal 1 and 2, Threads of Fate. I loved Square's direction in the PSone days. Hey, some of their games were misses, but I at least they tried different things.
-
Yup, and then it all ended, and we were treated to one rehash after the next. Blame Enix all you want, but if the merger was the first moment you decided to start criticizing the company, thats pretty damned convenient for square.

I'm not a Square fanboy, lol.
I've been critical before the merger, but we didn't see this kind of volume of spin-offs since after the merger. Square can do wrong, they've done wrong many times. Look at FF8. Trust me, man, I'm trying my best not to be biased here.

I really should play FFVIII.
-
just make sure you know that there are much better ways of getting more spells than Drawing, and you'll (hopefully) love it
-
Yeah, but now the good games come from the Enix side not the Square side...
There are no sides, since 2006 or so they're pretty much integrated. it's been the same producers involved with everything.
Also, how original a game is, especially for Square, has little to do with whether it's a sequel or spinoff or whatever. FFX-2, a pretty unique take on RPG aesthetics and game structure, is a lot more original than Threads of Fate, a fairly generic ARPG. People complain about Dawn of Mana because it's too different from the old ones, etc.
-
It basically had KH's horrible camera and even more tight environments where KH camera always sux
-
the point of Dawn of Mana was that it was totally designed around its physics engine, which KH is not.
-
kh, on the other hand, was designed around fanservicing fat goth girls
-
which is a totally legitimate and admirable purpose, btw.

Fat goth girls don't appreciate fighting along side various Disney characters. Maybe if this was a mix of Death Note, Final Fantasy, and Tim Burton movies you would have a point.
-
th' fuck? i don't know a single fat goth girl who DOESN'T moisten up at the sight of the disney store
-
you're also a fat goth girl on the internet
-
th' fuck? i don't know a single fat goth girl who DOESN'T moisten up at the sight of the disney store
I don't know where you live, but at least on the east coat the fat goth girls aren't on good terms with color or hygiene, two aspects which Disney is all about.
-
gimme floating space crates over poppy z brite
poppy z brite doesn't write like she used to anymore
the days of exquisite corpse and lost souls are thankfully long gone.
-
i'm not sure the "liquor" stories and their attendant new orleans fetishism are any more interesting, although they're at least vaguely nuanced as opposed to blood drinkin', corpse fuckin', entrail stranglin' anal sex of the dead
-
the rampant nola fetishism is why i really don't read a lot of her anymore. her short stories were always her strongest works though.
-
i hope it isn't true, since it means the casuals have won
i want them to make even niche-ier games, not these half-assed fanservicing efforts
-
the real die hard square fans (e.g. me) want their favorite designers to continue/increase development of "games only they want to play" and don't have a ton of interest in FF7.
and I love how everyone at Kotaku interpreted Wada's alleged ultimatum as directed at their personal dumb desire for a Secret of Mana remake or whatever.
-
I probably don't get out much, but this is really the first time I've ever heard the stereotype that fat goth girls clamor for Disney nostalgia.
-
I'm playing through this game and I'm honestly confused. The thing that spins and these cutscenes that fly in my face during battle makes absolutely no sense to me.
There is a shitload of fanservice however. FF7 nuts must be creaming while playing this.

Yeah that was my conclusion as well.
-
the slot machine is a dumb way of showing random stat boosts during battle. it also displays leveling up for you & your materia, though this isn't (as) random. the pictures and videos are supposed to be zack's memories that he draws on for strength.

ITT I will quote Loveless
-
“Will you be taking flight? Towards the planet that hates us.”
“Waiting for it to be received. A harsh tomorrow and rolling winds defy us.”
“For you it becomes quite usual to lose your dreams and pride. The Goddess herself has already let go of the arrow from her bow.”
“When will the beasts of this world bring their fight to an end? From the dark sky, the Goddess comes whirling down. The door to the light opens to happiness, together with the gift of the Goddess.”
best poem since the renaissance obviously

did you pay ichi back?
just do it and end this shit.

i haven't sent him the money yet, no. i feel that after all this time 40 dollars really isn't enough and that i should give him more than that but he says can't recieve packages at his jpn address. oh well. I really want to give him 100 dollars, which I should have by the end of the week. it's not like I need it. I'm a college student who lives at home during break and spends money on games. Right now, I don't really need any games. Ichi, however, is probably starving to death and living homeless without shelter! I should pitch in. It'll make me feel better.

good man.

Sorry PR. He never gets on aim or anything so I can rarely talk to him about personal stuff, as much as I like him.

crisis core has one of the worst game scripts in recent memory
-
It's really odd, when it came out in Japan I saw everyone over at GAF mushing over the game, calling it "Nomura's best" or SE's best FF spinoff since Tactics on the PSX. On the other hand, Subarashiki Kono Sekai got lukewarm impressions.
Then they both release in America... now everyone gushes over TWEWY and pisses all over Crisis Core. Beats me.
Even with the terrible DQ spinoffs, dsfijhgfhij
I have to disagree with you here. At least the TOSE spinoffs are awesome.
-
i think it just proves that for the most part, j-gaf's tastes aren't very uhhh...strong
-
i don't think crisis core is bad. it's a heck of a lot better than KH2 or FFXII. It's the first square enix game I've enjoyed on some minimal level since 2003, when they first merged. but it's not great either.
-
:piss Final Fantasy VII :piss2
I really should play FFVIII.
Final Fantasy VIII is quite good; the junction system is far more entertaining than fiddling with materia. However, it does create balance issues if you're diligent and have a lot of modding and refining abilities because you end up with stupidly powerful characters early on in the game (the game attempts to compensate by leveling up enemies as you go along, but IIRC, the variable difficulty is purely based on your level -- note here, though, that leveling up is hardly how you advance your characters in FFVIII).
I still think Final Fantasy X beats the pants off every other FF as far as gameplay goes. The characters are supremely well-balanced thanks to the early restrictions of the sphere grid, but eventually it opens up and becomes as infinitely customizable as the weapons and armor. If it weren't for a supremely unlikable cast and embarrassingly poor voice acting, it would be my favorite Final Fantasy game.
-
I'm convinced that people like Prole only claim to like FF8 to be iconoclastic. The game system IDEAS are good, but...
-
i love ff8. shut up.
-
Who wrote this script anyways? How did they go from FF12, which at least had a sensible script and voice acting, to this randomness. Each conversation feels like its on some seperate plane of obscurity only Final Fantasy characters can understand.
-
the script was written by Kazushige Nojima who was lead writer for the original FF7, 8, 10, 10-2, KH2, Advent Children, Glory of Heracles series, Smash Bros. Brawl, etc etc., and is doing 13. 12 was a totally different team, although the lead writer (Daisuke Watanabe) also worked on 10 and 10-2 (+ Threads of Fate and KH: Chain of Memories) and is doing the new KH handheld spinoffs.
