Title: Why has there not been a great PC Xbox emulator yet?
Post by: TVC15 on May 27, 2008, 02:41:57 AM
It should have been a fairly trivial thing to build.  PCs are much more powerful than the Xbox hardware, and I want to get some use out of my old Xbox games, since we all know actual BC on the 360 is ass city.

If it were that easy, wouldn't Microsoft have been able to do it for the 360?

Yeah, I don't understand why it hasn't been done already.

I am still waiting for a perfect Saturn and Dreamcast emulator first.  I find it wrong that a PS2 emulator runs better on my PC than a Dreamcast one.

not sure why its so hard

but here is an emulator site describing the process of what needs to be emulated

Dreamcast is supposed to run pretty well with a beefy PC. You can play SF3 Third Strike and shit on it. I think it was nullDC?

Ill try it, although I think I may have in the past.  I remember Crazy Taxi worked alright, but MSR was choppy.  There were also tons of graphics problems.

and using a Dreamcast emulator to play third strike is stupid when you can just use a CPS3 emulator to play superior versions.

Since the original XBox was built with off-the-shelf x86 components, successfully emulating basic functionality on a PC should (in theory) be easier than doing so on the 360, where they moved to Power PC.  It's a totally different CPU structure and uses different instruction sets, meaning some amount of translation of the machine code would be necessary that (again, in theory) shouldn't be needed on an x86-based PC.

Of course, there's always the nvidia north/southbridge and video card to worry about.  You know that there's no way NG was programmed using DirectX.  I'm 100% sure they hand-coded most of those graphic routines in assembly specifically tailored to that video chip.
