Tom Chick on Deus Ex, June 2000:
Do you just want to play a secret agent no matter how flat his personality? Do you get tickled hearing about loopy conspiracies as if they were even remotely plausible? Are you happy shooting enemies dumber than Doom demons by the dozen? Do you enjoy twiddling RPG-ish attributes with a vague sense that it doesn't really matter? Are you blissfully oblivious to cliche, convoluted meandering stories, diffuse settings, and erratic pacing? Do you thrill at the prospect of playing an action hero who also has to be a stingy quartermaster? Is your neck strong enough to handle any potential whiplash from the stuttering framerates caused by level designers with no sense for how many polygons their engine can reasonably handle? Are you willing to go beyond the mere suspension of disbelief
That he is actually right about all of these things (except the framerate, that's not a problem now but it sure as hell was back in 2000 when the game was running on the original Unreal engine and all of its GLide hooks), but the game is still very, very good regardless.

"pacing" is my biggest issue with Deus Ex, especially on replay. It's a bunch of obviously independently designed environments held together by only the flimsiest of gum and tape narratives.

Which sort of worked in that era, because there was only a handful of games that really tied all of their environments together in a decent manner back then. I admit that I approached the game back then a lot like I would Thief-each level being a self-contained adventure.
One fun thing-I never, ever, ever considered the plot to be serious. People who think of its plot as "serious" must also think that the National Treasure movies are analytical pieces of American history.

4 star rating system doesnt translate to a 1-10 rating system gracefully lol
-
I wish that I had been able to make that jump - to think of the stages as "levels" and not as connected environments. For some reason, I kept thinking I'd be going back to previous areas, etc.,
The mental contortions required to "believe" everything the game throws at you simultaneously is unpossible
I did get a minkill completion tho 8)

I lived in Columbus, which is the capitol of Ohio, for a couple of years. It is definately a shitthole.
Also, I don't remember them forcing you to watch movies every time you respawned? Sounds like this person wasn't saving the game, and was completely restarting every time they died... ???

7.5 is too generous.
At least 4/10

Awesome thread.

Off topic, but Columbus fucking destroys Cincinnati. You might as well tack the entire fucking town onto Kentucky. It's actually sick because the only upside to Cincinnati is actually the metro area in KY and MAYBE Kings Island.
Back on topic, I'm actually about to start replaying Deus Ex for the first time in seven years. The last time I played it was the so-so PS2 port. I've never played through Invisible War but I heard it was shit... what was the actual issues with that game?
And god knows I would play a Deus Ex 3 since evidently they are cranking that out without Ion Storm.

It's really short [about 8 hours even with sidequests] and its less RPG and more action than the original. Overall, I really liked it, although I only spent $2 on it.
-
Wow, eight hours? Lame.

I reinstalled the game after two years and plan on giving the game another chance. Are there any good mods out there?

Get the retexture pack, that's it. There are some fine SP mods out there (like new maps, story etc.) but forget about them and concentrate on the main game first.
Perfect, that's exactly what I was looking for. Good jon
*edit: would this one work?

if cincinnati were somehow moved into kentucky overnight im pretty sure a race civil war would start by at least 10 am

Ohio is suddenly bad place because we have a little common sense!
Except the whole black people thing
