i think it largely depends on what you think you want to do with the rest of your life

college can be a great boon

there are some things i wish i had gone to college for, while without college but talent and work i am now fairly comfortable.

yeah, going for something specific in the tech field is one thing. Going to a major university is the waste.

I am only going because my parents had this savings plan thing where if I didn't go, all the money they'd invested would be lost. Talk about being cornered.

No, I just feel as if I'm not done learning yet.  I know I'm going to love the environment of a campus, and enjoy living on my own.  I'm looking into mostly music business and audio engineering, but that's down the line.  Right now I'm gonna focus on my core credits at Kent State before I transfer down to Belmont for my real major. :rawk

It is an odd feeling though, being done.

edit:  And yeah, major universities=ick.  Believe me, that's not my thing.  I'm just looking forward to meeting some ne people while learning some new things.

A lot of employers require a college degree these days.  I've been passed over on a few good jobs because of it.   That and I'm incompetent... but from what I've experienced, you don't need to be competent for those jobs ... just have a degree.  So I'm sure it has more to do with the not having a degree thing.

I remember everyone saying "oh, college is so much better than High School both academically and socially!", but it is the same dumb shit over again.  Actually, lecture classes are fun because I can sleep or just leave and it is no big deal.

for all the people that skipped out on college, what did you do to escape the life of a dirty poor?  I tried and failed at the college thing a long time ago, and i've yet to find a way to make my unedmucated life work.

College is more of the same, and at the same time, it isn't.  When you finally get into your major, you'll get a lot more classes related to your interests rather than just general bullshit that you have no use for.

I never liked school and I'm glad to be done with it all, but you absolutely need to go to college and get a degree; it's going to be important for your future.  And you may love your experience, so don't let any anti-social emo schmucks tell you otherwise.   :P

Go far away where the lures and distractions from home can't reach you. It will be tough at first with the adjustment, but it is the only way to make yourself. I, sadly, never went to college cause I couldn't afford it and had no family backing. It was great visiting my friends who did go for a fun weekend only to go back home to a factory job while they just got to go to class, party, and fornicate amongst a sea of 'fish'.

You can still get a good job with no education, you will just have to wait until you are 30+ and have good experience in something this country still needs. But unless you can craft a successful lawn mowing business and landscaping company, you will probably never be your own boss unless you get a solid education.

I hated my old college.  Then again, as stated above, I hated my major, school was making major budget cuts, instructors were mediocre, classmates in general were not very interesting people.  Only thing I enjoyed about it was the campus and that one hot dog stand.  OH, and the dance and fictional writing classes I took there because the teachers really seemed to have passion for what they did.

Other than the drama that comes with going to private schools, I love my current college.  I'm learning the skills and trade of a profession I am genuinely interested in.  The majority of the students I see day in and day out share enthusiasm for their work (whatever their major), instructors actually know what they're talking about because it is required that they are working professionals in the field they teach.  Also very cool when some of them show the class the projects they worked on and you're like, "HOLY SHIT YOU WORKED ON THAT?!"

you'll regret saying this in the first month.  it can be interesting when you get into the upper-division courses of a major you like or when you get one of the few teachers who actually love their class.

My suggestion is to always keep a "buffer" class or two of some easy GE class that you have some friends in so you can afford to skip a couple sessions and for any class you actually have any interest/need in, take a night class.  there'll be more adults and less just out of high school snot-holes.  since the students are actually interested in learning in some of these classes, the teacher is actually interested in teaching.
