A couple things I found that were interesting. Coming from the guy who owns Fox and the rare media outlet that is considered "conservative."
Rupert Murdoch thinks Obama is the bees knees and has a terrific chance to win the election.
http://blogs.wsj.com/dnotebook/2008/05/29/murdoch-obamas-a-rock-star/?mod=blog (http://blogs.wsj.com/dnotebook/2008/05/29/murdoch-obamas-a-rock-star/?mod=blog)
and
Murdoch staunchly defended the Fox News Channel’s “Fair and Balanced” motto as accurate, adding that even Bill O’Reilly “gives both sides all the time” — a remark that prompted laughs from the audience.
So why aren’t there more liberal voices on Fox News, Kara Swisher asked? Murdoch replied that he would hire a liberal voice if he could find one that was strong enough.
“Would you hire Keith Olbermann?” Swisher asked.
Murdoch’s response: “No, I fired him five years ago… He’s crazy.”
Fox News still kicking butt.

Didn't Olbermann recently match or surpass O'Reilly in the ratings?
Anyway, it seems to me that O'Reilly actually has opposing viewpoints on his show more often than Olbermann. Though I just watch the odd youtube here and there.
-
O'Reilly is more "fair and balanced" than Olbermann. All Olbermann does is give a semi intelligible rant for 5 minutes, then welcome a guest to agree with his rant and further expound on it. At least O'Reilly (and even Hannity) bring two people in to debate an issue from opposite positions.
Now in terms of ratings you're wrong: people do watch Olbermann's rants unfortunately. Didn't he beat O'Reilly head to head a couple times last week?

Not according to the link I posted. I think O'Rilley tops them all. Not a fan of O'Reilly or any of the talking heads on the radio. I have never even watched his TV show but on a long drive I would rather listen to his blathering over the others. On the radio he does present more opposing viewpoints and "tries" to be balanced, though the boat always tips to the right.
From the article
FNC also had 11 out of the top 13 programs in cable during the month in Total Viewers. The O'Reilly Factor was the #1 program in cable news for the 90th consecutive month, and saw gains in Total Viewers year-to-year (26%)

I feel like I read something more recently than this, but it's a start:

Phil Griffin knew it would happen, he just didn't think it would happen this quickly. On Friday night, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann was the top-rated cable news show in the 25-54 demo. That means Olbermann beat his cable rival, FNC's The O'Reilly Factor and its host Bill O'Reilly. That's a first.
Looks like it's only in the 25-54 group

Also Olbermann's self righteous bullshit pisses me off. The man is bitch made to the core yet pretends to be this Murrow-esque figure, constantly fightin' for true and justice. Yet in reality it's all an act created by his writers.
Case in point: his laughably over the top anti-Hillary "special report" rant. Then a few weeks later he gives her the dumbest softball interview I've ever seen, like a bitch. Murrow would have gone off the script and thrown caution to the wind. Hell, fucking Chris Matthews would have spanked Hillary's ass without fear of reprisal.
-
So this is all based on one day and a limited demographic at that? Okay, guess once you throw in the old people, O'Rilley goes back in the lead?

I really hate his 'good night and good luck' send off, it's so pretentious. As if he's doing anything earth shattering with his program.
And nothing is worse than his 'special reports' (even that title is laughable). And yea, his interview with her was an embarassment.

I said 'matched or exceeded,' if he's repeatedly (PD posted a different day) beating then he must be close to matching on other days. O'Reilly's gone way down and Olbermann has gone way up in the last two years.
I don't see how 24-55 is any more 'limited' than 56-80 or whatever O'Reilly is winning.
-
Well television/radio ratings are broken down into demographics. O'Reilly wins all the older demographics, and Olbermann challenges him for the younger ones. Some would argue that winning the younger demographics is more important because that's the audience advertisers aim for.

Yup. And they won't be dead in 5 years.

That sounds good in theory but how does that explain the #1 network in the nation (up to this month when Fox/American Idol finally broke it's cherry). CBS has catered to an older audience for years, been at the top of the heap for years.
Oh and AdmiralViscen. I think the numbers for the older gen would be FAR wider to O'rilleys favor. If there is a pretty big audience there it does make a difference as you have to them all in. You need to give us the whole pie, instead of picking at pieces of it.
Again see the CBS logic or feel free and stick with that last place NBC mentality of trying to go after the young uns. It is working well for them. You guys better not quit your day jobs in the hopes of running a network. People are living longer these days.
-
Of course O'Reilly dominates the geriatrics, no one is disputing that. Or sucking off Olbermann, for that matter.
I didn't pick at pieces, I mentioned something from memory, then I found a source and corrected my claim. :dur
edit: Actually, all I did was ask a question, and then found an answer
-
The younger demographic is more important to advertisers, the older demographic is more desired by networks; older people rely on television for their news far more than young people, who instead get their info online (which is why liberal radio is such a failure).
I like O'Reilly even though I disagree with him on most stuff. He's an asshole sure, but so is Matthews but I like him as well. See, they know they're assholes and aren't afraid to admit it, while Olbermann seems obsessed with being a pretentious ass.
-
what's so great about being an asshole and admitting it? wouldn't it be a hell of a lot better to conduct an interview without shouting someone down or belittling them?
-
I stopped watching network news like 4 years ago, but from what I've seen the last 6 months I think I like Matthews.
-
I used to swear by MSNBC. But, their hard turn to the left over the last 5 months has really turned me off. CNN is probably the best right now. And Fox is completely unwatchable.
I generally just watch CNBC though.

If not for the whole vegan shit, I'd say Bill Maher was my favorite. Heh...oh well.
New Rule: If you are on the board of PETA, you automatically qualify for the biggest douche award. Maher is a douche of highest regard.
Fun quote:
"To those people who say, `My father is alive because of animal experimentation,' I say `Yeah, well, good for you. This dog died so your father could live.' Sorry, but I am just not behind that kind of trade off." -Bill Maher, PeTA celebrity spokesman
Yet how many PETA members use insulin?
PETA Senior Vice President MaryBeth Sweetland on her use of insulin, which was tested on animals:
"I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic. Twice a day I take synthetically manufactured insulin that still contains some animal products -- and I have no qualms about it ... I'm not going to take the chance of killing myself by not taking insulin. I don't see myself as a hypocrite. I need my life to fight for the rights of animals."
--Glamour, January 1990
Do as I say, not as I do. Pretty much the mantra of the far left.

Yeah; my offline news sources are BBC radio, BBC America, and the PBS News Hour. Lord knows why anyone would willingly lobotomize themselves by watching O'Reilly, Olbermann, etc. --probably the same people who believe professional wrestling provides sophisticated cultural commentary.

it's all a post modern attempt to present an ironic telling of the monomyth writ large for our culture. they are our pantheon. they are us.

not a fan of maher either. his anti-religious bullshit pisses me off'; he's too smart to resort to that imo. didn't know he was a peta member :-\

I actually used to enjoy his night time show on ABC back in the day.
-
PETA is a joke. That said, you're taking one person's words (Maher's) and applying them to the president of Peta. I'm sure they have very similar beliefs towards animal rights, but just like not all democrats or republicans or libertarians or whatever believe 100% with members of their party, I also wouldn't suspect every member of Peta agreeing 100% with each other.
It would be interesting to see what Maher would do if he needed insulin though. And without animals, how would vegans know what flavor to make fakeburgers and fakebacon? ;)
You know darn well Maher would be sticking insulin up his belly the minute a doctor said he needed it. Which goes to why I made those quotes. PETA, hypocrites, do as I say, etc. :)

Probably, but ya never know. Some of these people are really stupid. Like, starve your baby on a vegan diet stupid.
Oh no doubt, on the bright side it is nice to see that PETA's kill rate in 2007 was in the 90% range.

I actually like Hitchens. Out of all the anti-religion assholes he's the most reasonable. And he's pretty damn smart. I think Maher is smart/witty but not on that level.
