25 dollars is my budget, what do you recommend, EB?
These are my options:
Doom 3
UT2004
BG&E
Dark Messiah
CoD2
Feel free to shout out for something that aint up there, just don't recommend distinguished mentally-challenged shit because I've played a ton of PC games already, and really I just want a game I can play now.
-
Civilization 4 is my recommendation.
-
BG&E out of that list
Civ is a good choice too.
-
Forgot to mention, RTS are banned.
-
Team Fortress 2, Titan Quest, Stalker

This is what I meant by distinguished mentally-challenged shit. Painfully obvious PC gaming staples save for what I mention don't need a recommendation. Titan Quest is a good choice though, definitely considered.
-
Forgot to mention, RTS are banned.
If you are referring to Civ4, do reconsider.
It's not an RTS; it's turn-based strategy and it is god-incredibly-awesome. Truly timeless gameplay.
-
Play Heart of Darkness

Noted, but I don't want something that requires a load of attention to get into, I want a "jump in and play me" game.
EDIT: WTF is heart of darkness?
-
Can't think of any "jump in and play" games for the PC. Not that there aren't any, but those types of games I normally have relegated to consoles.
Anyhow, until I can think of any, try out TrackMania Nations. It's a full game, it's mindless fun, and it's 100% free.
-
well just look at my OP for what I mean. I don't mean mindless fun, I mean something with not much depth. I wanna get an SP id software game, but I don't think Doom 3 supports 16:10, cuz I know Q4 doesn't.

This guys wins.

smh

From your list, UT2K4 is a sure winner.
Doom3 is not pick-up-and-play. There's an emotional investment involved. (Hey, I'm sensitive!)
NOLF is a blast to play, but the engine may look a bit long-in-the-tooth by today's standards.
Serious Sam (1 and / or 2) has a simple mandate: Blow sh!t up.
Painkiller instead of Doom3 if you want to relive the experience of Doom and Doom2.

Ah! I forgot about Painkiller!

I've decided, Painkiller and BG&E, yay

It doesn't matter. By having enjoyed this masterpiece of a game, we all win!
Evilboreans = consummate connoisseurs of gaming confirmed.

"Jump & play" PC games?
Hmm...
Painkiller?
Serious Sam 1, 1.5 and 2?
Doom 3?
Quake 4?
Max Payne 1&2?
The others have been mentioned, but Max Payne? Hell yeah!
Loved bullet time when it first came out. It was sweet!

Beyond Good & Evil is probably a lot less than $25, so get that and use the rest on Psychonauts.
-
I third or fourth Civilization IV. The game will eat away at your life. I have resisted the temptation to install it on my laptop for fear that it will ruin my life, but I can only fight the urges for so long.
-
I just finished my spreadsheet detailing the tech advances, national wonders, world wonders, normal buildings, special buildings and religions to aim for to accomplish that ever-elusive Cultural Victory. Damn. I was only about 3000 points shy in one city the last time.
Between Civs 1-4, different versions and add-ons, plus mapping tech trees, filling in spreadsheets and calculating AI algorithms I have easily dedicated a full year of my life to the series. What a monumental time sink this series is. And it's worth every god-damned second.
Raban, if you haven't played this game yet, you are easily missing out on one of the masterpieces of gaming, period. Bar none, etc, etc. Saying you're a gamer without having played this gem is like going to the Louvre and neglecting La Gioconda.
-
Titan Quest is a steal and my recommendation. Civ is good too.
-
This thread made me buy Civ 4. Which of the expansion packs were better?

psychonauts is $20 through steam
BG&E is $10

Beyond the Sword is the best one that adds all the big gameplay changes. Warlords just added some scenarios iirc.
-
i just ordered Europa Universalis last night. seems kind of neat

Which one- ( 1, 2, 3 or Rome ) ? I've played them all and they are very different in their fundamental mechanics, and I'd be really negligent not to share some tips and tricks with you if it is your first Paradox game.

As another poster said, Beyond the Sword is all that you need. It includes all of the base Warlords gameplay changes as part of the package, so all you get with Warlords is the new scenarios (which are in turn dwarfed by the usermade content like Fall from Heaven 2 anyway).
-
TRACKMANIA

OK, first off patch up to 1.3, the changes are pretty significant.
Next, go through the manual and tutorials. They are somewhat helpful.
Now, go and read through the basic strategy stuff over at the EU3 wiki while playing your first game:
http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Main_Page
I always recommend Portugal or Castile for EU newbies. You spend most of your time exploring the new world and don't really have to worry about things like badboy, curia/HRE electors, and other things. You just get your conquistadors and explorers and colonists and start having a good time growing your empire.
You might also want to read an after action report for the country you are playing:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=360
You can find an index there.
Finally, use the wiki and ask here or in a new thread/PM if you have questions. Paradox games aren't for everyone, but for those of us whom they are made for, they are a one of kind treasure.

I don't think Doom 3 supports 16:10, cuz I know Q4 doesn't.
16:10 support is in Doom 3 (probably the same in Quake 4):
r_customHeight
r_customWidth
r_mode -1
r_aspectRatio 2
:bow console commands :bow2

Beleive it or not, Doom 3 doesn't support 1360x768; it will only do 1280x720.

i'll probably start a game tonight
