Title: hearing people discuss politics in the office is scary
Post by: Mupepe on June 02, 2008, 11:42:06 AM
i always think "who are all these narrowminded dumb people that show up in polls?  I don't know any"

Wrong, I apparently know tons of them.  I'd just never heard them talk about politics

:lol

They're talking about drugs.

"coke man.  just one taste of that stuff and you're hooked.  they say it's almost impossible to stop after trying it"

and then they went on to imply that obama voters are meth addicts.

and they have the complete opposite view of most democrats.

while most democrats are tired of the primary being dragged out because people get tired of it, get angry, the party gets divided, etc... these guys say:

"those democrats sure are smart.  they're dragging out the primary and getting on all the news!  all you hear about is obama, of course you're going to vote for him!"

That's how I feel about family gatherings. The wife's right-wing baptist family, that is.

"Well, I just don't think he has the experience, you know?"
"I heard he's a muslim."
"Really, a muslim?"
"Yeah, a muslim. He refused to swear on the bible, and his name sounds like Osama, doesn't it? He's a muslim and an atheist."
"And he's black, huh huh!"

As someone who was taught to question everything and who would frequently find himself fighting violently over social issues such as racism, I'm not sure how to handle these discussions, especially seeing as how it's hurled forth by family, not random knuckleheads in the streets. So, I tend to simply fade out of the discussion and find some empty corner somewhere.

that's what i do.  I just ignore that shit.  He's frequently called Osama around the office and I've heard "HE SWORE IN ON THE KORAN!"  :'(

I've got many right wing christian acquaintances and I can't let bullshit slide. The veiled prejudice/fear is so fucking transparent. The worst thing is the people who rail against "blind Obama cultists" and then repeat the various muslim/atheist/koran/etc rumors. These people clearly haven't done any research or looked up these  charges. Instead they received emails that validated their fears and accepted it blindly. Fuck that

I don't get aggressive or anything, but I shoot down the bullshit. If you aren't going to vote for Obama because he's pro choice FINE. But don't base your vote on lies that feed on prejudice

My mom's mom is racist and I don't think she realizes it.  For Thanksgiving last year she's going on and on about how her old church got a black pastor when the white pastor left and how she doesn't understand why they had to get a negro pastor.  She must have said negro like 30 times in 10 minutes, my cousin and I had to go get a drink in the kitchen cause we were about to die of laughter.  My family mostly smiles and nods at her though but it's still awkward.

I called my mom a dumb ass by accident. When she told me about her and her friends all supporting different democrats. I accidently said. "Yeah well you are all dumb asses"

Well, I'd honestly appreciate it if it was veiled at this point. But seeing as how the entire family is white, blunt racially charged comments are much enjoyed. And then you have the deeply honest racism, like when my sister-in-law came to visit The Big City and said that she had parked the car in a safe area. Really, safe around here? Oh yeah, it was safe because there were white people around. :wtf

So in the end, this whole Muslim deal, it's all because he's not white. And Clinton sucks because her husband got a blowjob from an intern. Never mind that these characters actually took their bible buses to visit Bush's Michigan rallies (and now feel jilted because he hadn't been perfectly honest to them), now McCain is where it's at. Old and white, that's what they want.

See, that's the honest, old racism I'm talking about. It's so genuine that it's hard to even criticize it.

Just like Ron Paul is going to win the Republican nomination, amirite?  You don't necessarily have a good track record with political predictions, spanky.  It's tough to make Pee Dee look like a Svengali, but you do a good job of it!

Office political discussions.  :-X

I'm a full-time student, part-time worker; at the office I work at (which is a four person department), one of the women there said that if Obama becomes president then black people will take over the country and enslave the white race.

Laugh, cry, fume, throw shit -- what do I do?  ??? I don't even know how to respond to that shit.

I live in NYC; people around the office talk about Obama becoming President and enslaving the white race too, but here they mean it as a good thing.

The only person I get to talk about politics in the office with is my dad.

He's 63, white, and in the top income brackett. So, the conversations are not exactly stimulating. He wasn't too excited about any of the candidates. He is, however, absolutely 150% convinced McCain will win some way or another.

I generally won't talk religion or politics with anyone in person. Online its fine because its easy to just stop talking to them without consequences.

I'm also in NYC, so it's mostly one-sided, towards the left.  It makes for pretty boring discussions, as everyone is just agreeing with each other.

I live in a veeeeery conservative state.  That being said, the DemonCrats here are starting to find their spines and our congressman (yes, singular), Uncle Ted (official nickname of Ted Stevens), and some other prominent republicans are under various investigations for corruption and such.  In my entire 27 years I've never been represented by a non-republican and this very year the tide could turn.  Its awesome.

And McCain is so dead in the water its not even funny.  He's going to get mauled when the actual presidential campaign kicks into gear.  He's got all of Bush's bad ideas with none of the charisma and smoothness nessecary to sell them.  He's got a snowball's chance in hell at this point.

republicans don't like McCain.  after the primaries are over and Obama's the nominee, you'll see a fucking smackdown on him.  white moderates will run to Obama's side and racists will be too ashamed to vote.  it's going to be a landslide.

if a racist started talking to me about white becoming slaves once Obama becomes president, I'd point out that that's not really an issue until we get a hispanic president.

It's pretty disconcerting when someone who seems pretty sane casually reveals themselves to be a 9/11 truther or something like that.

If you're going to be a crazy person, you should have the decency to act and dress like a crazy person, says I.

You have no idea how strange I felt when I asked to use a coworkers phone and I opened it up to see a picture of the twin towers with a bald eagle and faded flag in the background.

I wonder how much people who say they believe in conspiracy theories really do believe in them.

I mean, if you thought that the US government was capable of deliberately killing several thousand American civilians and maybe assassinating more to keep it a secret, you wouldn't openly talk about it and go about your business as usual, would you?  You'd turn into a crazy militiaman, right?

Either a lot of people are really flippant about this stuff or they're a lot better at living in a nightmarish dystopia than I'd be.
