UT2K4 was already verging on "too twitchy" for me, so apart from the graphics (and taking away some game modes iirc), what has improved in terms of gameplay?

Just UT2K4.
Renting UT3 was enough to make me return it and reinstall UT2K4. Superior game total.

Graphics are nice but the game seems half baked. All the love went to Gears and fighting with the cell I guess.

I haven't played enough of it to say, so I'll defer to the fans who've already posted in this thread.
I do think UT3 probably gets more shit than it deserves.

Jesus it's not a bad game. Look if even *I* could put the "OMG. DUMBED DOWN CONSOLE CRAP!" shtick down and give this game a honest playthrough then I'm 100% sure most of you would like it.
It's not a great game but it's fun and looks slick. UT2K4 is old, old, old. I got bored of that game to tears.
Too bad ellitist PC gaming pricks all over the world think UT3 is "not worth" their time.
I played UT2K4 to death, and UT3 is just a drag. Other than the needlessly muddy visuals, what's worth the price of entry here for an 2K4 veteran? It has the UT appeal of fast, mindless action, but UT3 just doesn't feel like enough of a step up from 2K4. At this point, it feels downright outdated. Sorry Borys, but I'll give a damn when Epic decides to give a damn.

I guess I'm just a sucker for new, shiny stuff.
Sort of new, grungy stuff. I played the demo plenty, and then the PS3 version (being able to rent games is nice, eh), and it felt old. Darkwalkers and Nightshades be damned, this is the same game I played to death over 4 years ago. As you say, Gears is where it's at for Epic, and UT3 makes that abundantly clear. :(
