There are those who will laugh, and I will not blame you, but I tried playing The Bouncer tonight.
Square took the developer of the exceptional Tobal series and made a high profile brawler, marketed it well, and I've yet to see a more innovative and complete localization in any other game. How did it go SO WRONG? :'(

but 50% of the game was watching the loading screen

I remember saying "holy shit" tho the graphics when i saw the trailer at the cinema.
Then i played it, and i said "holy...shit..."

that Mugatu dude was pretty sweet. Game was total poop

The best thing about the game was that it was over really quickly, like Streets of Rage length.
shorter I think. Streets of Rage 2 is like 3-4 hours long, that is, if you can beat it. I don't recall restarting too much in The Bouncer.

I remember being pumped for this. Bought it before I read a review. I got home and played it nonstop and beat it on the first time turning it on. I was like W...T....F.... I pissed 50 bucks away on this?

my third post on gaf was a review of The Bouncer
My "it's shit" review sparked a row with the guy who ran PSXExtreme (can't remember) who said it was 97% and set my name as a sony hater right from day one.
Yeah... it's my fault it's shit, shoot the messenger why don't you!
That was Alphasnake. My good buddy Leguna also had some crazy denial towards the game sucking...people couldn't seem to accept it.
Wish I could dig up more stuff on the old PS2 days. I remember posting on Usenet that I thought Silpheed PS2 was complete garbage, which spanned a small flame thread against me, including comments from Victor Ireland and the boot-licking toadies that kissed his ass. My favorite thing about this was that it had zero to do with WD since this was for the Japanese version.
PS2 has a stellar library now, but boy did it stink something fierce way back when. The first year of its release (from Japan, so April 2000 onwards) pretty much sucked hard. I don't think I can count the number of good games it had on one hand...there was Tekken Tag, SSX, and uh...hmm...

I played some more this morning, passed the "Special Forces Secret Handshake" (note: sadly not a euphemism for wanking) level and then reached the escort missions for Dominique. As lame as the previous missions were for mashing, it has become more lame for having a partner in the fight whose only purpose is to die quickly.
I may still play through; from the sound of the above posts, I may have another hour ahead of me... but my 360 came back from repair today, and I spent the evening glutting my GTA jones.
Hey, is it my imagination, or is The Bouncer's main character, Sion, completely recycled in design for the main character of Kingdom Hearts?

My friend's ex girlfriend (well actually she dated 2 of my friends) wrote for PSXExtreme. She was pretty attractive, too, which I'd imagine is rare in the game journalism field.

Why doesn't that surprise me?
Sony fanboys...

Remember the E3 (was it 2000?) Square booth with The Bouncer? It was just continuous video running of nothing but the cut-scenes. That should have been the big clue that something was up. :lol

How were Square's baseball, driving, and wrestling games? I think they were all released in 2000 or early 2001.

I liked the music.

Actually the baseball game got a sequel and the wrestling game got two, the last one was released in late 2003. The first ones were mostly panned, the later sequels got a fairly positive reaction among fans of the genres. I'd still like to see staff listings for those games; they seem to have been done by the Osaka branch (Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhander, Parasite Eve II) --- I don't know how much staff the sports teams had in common with those earlier games, but the music people were the same at least. There was also a soccer game released in 2002, which was poorly received.

Thinking back about The Bouncer, it was the only game that I can remember from last-gen that created the same level of back-pedaling, denial, flaming, mocking, and general pandemonium that seems to plague Sony's high profile exclusive releases this gen (Lair, Haze, Heavenly Sword). I guess because Sony was so far ahead last gen and had so many games, that one or two bombs wasn't really a big deal, but when the PS2 was still pretty new and people thought the DC might still have a chance, The Bouncer was a huge debacle. I was posting at a Sega forum back then, and people were going nuts when the negative Japanese reviews starting coming in.

I remembered some running gag me and my brother had for a while back then.
Everytime we went to buy a game, one of us would point at the PS2 bargain bin and say, "Hey, let's get THE BOUNCA!"
Then we'd laugh. Oh how we'd laugh.

Yeah, that was really awful too, but it was no where near as hyped as The Bouncer was.
