As said, if Infamous for some reason gets axed, then bye bye PS3. I'd be sad to miss out on future Insomniac games, but the line must be drawn somewhere.

I fucking called it

I must have told you all about the chick I dated a couple of times who worked in a games store and was convinced that PS3 would be banging in a year or two and that the 360 was crap. Sony fans are much easier to deal with in forums, thats for sure. I was trying to tell her that PS3 had no games etc... at least I got to french her  :'(

But yeah PS3 shitbinned, blu rays to follow shortly. Sony am fuxxored

Funny thing is, this is coming around when Ars Technica re-reviews the PS3 with a 9 :lol . Take the good with the bad Sony, well mostly bad ;_;

Blu-ray will keep it going, MGS4 next week!

....and then after that, it's back to being a nice $400 upscaling PS2, upscaling DVD, and Blu-ray player until god knows when.  before anyone says it, Killzone 1 sucked horribly, I have no faith in the sequel.

Why the fuck are all these games requiring hdd installs? If you play a lot of games, then you've gotta be close to running out of room now. Stoopit...

Well, yes, eventually you'll have to clean out the fridge. But who wants to play old games anyway?

^ lol, sfag spin ftw. HDD installs are BS. Surely Even Sony fans are realising now that the reason for installs arent that the games are more full on, its that the PS3 is a heap that cant run shit without mandatory installs

Depends on the result. I don't necessarily think the DMC4 install seems justified (although that's hard to say as it was obviously necessary for some reason), but Naughty Dog certainly put the cache file to good use. And I assume Insomniac will too with Resistance 2, as the company is aiming for that game to have no loading between areas. I'll gladly give up HDD space for a seamless gaming experience.

So that's the technical reason - it can't run the games well off the disc?

Even then, it should be an option intead of forced. At least I think so anyhow.

I think the most important thing is that they have separate cache and save/config files. For some reason, I assumed that this was the case with all games, but it isn't. And that's just fucking dumb.

I believe that Blu-ray drives have a much slower access speed than a 360/PC dvd drive; Thus mandatory installs so that games can actually run ok as data is being read from the disc and the HDD simultaneously. This may also explain why the PS3 is difficult to code for and ports of 360 games come out worse than the originals.

And for the record I dont bash on Sony beacuse its fun and/or fashionable (I loved the PS1 and 2 and the PSP is fantastic). The PS3 is just such a poorly concieved shithouse of a system with pretty much nothing going for it

Seeing as how you made that Ass-shit Crud appreciation thread of vomit, I'd say that anything you post is based on you being a bleeding know-nothing with remarkably poor taste.

But hey.

I've heard so many complaints from developers about optical media this generation...

Basically, DVD is too small to hold modern games, and Blu-ray is too slow to run them.

:gloomy budget optical media

I wonder when optical media will be replaced with something better?  It's obviously great for movies and sound, not so much for games.

Will we go back to cartridges some day?  :omg

More like fullgame installs with discs used for purchase checks.  Which is fine by me as RPGs in the optical era have driven me batshit with loadtimes.

At this point, the PS3 is nothing more to me than a second-gen PSX-- it's an overpriced PS2 that also plays Blu-Ray movies.  I use it mainly for PS2 games and some movies.  Microsoft got a head start and they have the online community that the PS3 is lacking.  They also have far more people playing online, and more online titles to choose from.

Perhaps these games were cancelled because they were eating up too much time and resources, but on a system that is currently quite lacking in the software department, they need all that they can get.

Something is seriously wrong when HOME is the biggest thing the PS3 has to offer.

who cares, it still has better exclusives than the 360

PS3 "exclusives" meaning longer load times, forced HDD installs, shittier online, and forced updates I take it?

Possibly depending on how cheap solid state media gets

Why not? Flash memory / ssd prices drop and capacities increase daily. I wouldn't mind seeing this happen. The media is much more compact as well. Furthermore, unlike optical media, your console wouldn't need any moving / mechanical pieces which would save on wear and tear.

Apart from the (still prohibitively expensive) price / gb difference with optical media, it's a win-win situation.

With full installs, you still have to deal with load times - just not as much.

Flash memory / ssd is where it's at if you want to reduce load times, but even then, you can't do away with it altogether, as they are still bound by speed / memory transfer limits. Just look at the DS and the PSP (with games running off the Memory Stick): you still have to wait a couple of seconds. You just don't have to wait as much.

Oh yeah, I'd love cartridges to make a comeback.  Aside from their storage limitations and cost they were fantastic.

No load times and no moving parts = win.

Ratchet, for one. Uncharted doesn't leave a permanent footprint either.

edit: I might have misread that. Ratchet has separate cache and save files. GTAIV seems to be one big fat file, s presumably you lose your game saves when you delete the cache. Which, as said, is fucking dumb.

No, I'm saying which games don't separate the save file from the cache file?

See edit

As for the installs making up for weakness in multiplatform games, I'm still not buying it. Burnout Revenge, for example, streams a massive environment at a fast clip yet requires no install whatsoever. I'm not sure how the load times are compared to the 360 version, but I haven't come across anything that damns the load times.

Ugh, R* should be better than that.

If more than 1 game does that them the install situation is beyond abominable. Fuck.
