Title: How do you feel about your ISP?
Post by: lordmaji on June 05, 2008, 04:42:29 PM
Personally, I'm alright w/ it for now. (Comcast) Until they start trying to rape me for bandwidth usage and what not. If they start capping my speeds at less then what I'm paying for, they can eat a dick.

Any thoughts guys?

The Comcast capping sucks ass.  That said, I have no problems with my ISP.  The US as a whole, however, really has to start investing in dark fiber.  We are so behind.

AT&T 6 Mb line works fantastic for me. Never had one problem in 5 years.

I'm only about 2000 feet from the DSLAM, so my speeds are always at the highest possible rate. I believe they are going to begin offering a 30 Mb line as part of their Uverse package. May look into getting that.

My connection in the winter is fine. High speed from a local start-up.

Where I have to live in the summer, though, is outside the range of any ISP, and the phone lines are circa 1892, so dial-up isn't even a viable option. I'm currently using Bell's "High Speed" wireless service, but we're out of range of the high speed and only able to connect to the core network at a dial up rate. Plus it's heavily capped.

I hate how all these providers are constantly coming out with "Solutions for at home AND the cottage!", when I'm smack in the heart of cottage country, and out of range of all of 'em.

I have Comcast, and it doesn't really matter how I feel about it as it's really the only realistic option available here. It's alright, although there seems to be an outage every few weeks. And performance on weekends is just miserable shit.

I'm on screaming 512k - I was on 1500k but I dropped when prices went up a while back.  One of the downsides of living in Australia.

For the Aussies, I'm with Internode.  Been very good for years.

You with At&T? This new Uverse thing is forcing them to build more DSLAMs as the longest distance they can get it to work is like 6000 feet. So, you could be getting upgraded soon.

my block got rewired to fiber optic so AT&T could put in their uverse system.  I have the cheapest internet package so it's 1.5Mbit/s download and 1Mbit/s upload.  that's a weird proportion but the upload speed doesn't really change when you get the higher end packages.  The good thing is I've never noticed any capping but I'm not sure where my upload speed would put me with regards to hosting XBL games.

However, I got a DVR when the uverse system was put in and that's really awesome.  it's really easy to avoid ever watching live TV and thus, commercials.

My personal experience (outside of University networks) has been with Cox and Comcast. Oh god do I hate HATE comcast.

Comcast eats Cox's cock. I wish I was still in Cox land :'(
