Jetpack propelled, 12 foot tall, genetically modified, zealot, facist space marines. No, there really is no better scifi license for video gaming than Warhammer 40K.

Game looks amazing, GFW will have a special podcast tomorrow talking about the game since there is apparently an embargo lifting on it tomorrow.

Starcraft 1.5 XBLA will sell really well im sure, but DoW offers a formula I havent been playing for ages. After games like Rise of Legends, Kohan, Company of Heroes, the hum de dum gameplay of starcraft is boring.

It looks great, but I havent played the first one. Is it still any good + does it have a story?

I played through it again about three months ago. It's still good fun.

I saw that video two days ago but I didn't post it since I didn't think anyone would care.  :-\

Homeworld 2 has a very active modding scene. The BSG stuff, Point Defense Systems, etc. It's a very healthy community and they are doing cool things.

They're pretty different games gameplay wise

I'm not a big fan of Blizzard even though I get all their games for free from friends that work there.

Most of the stuff they give me are still unopened.  :(

I just feel the way they do graphics keep PC technology from moving forward.

Valve does a much better job of making sure that their games run on every machine while still managing to create top of the line graphics.

Not really. I think we have place for two amazing RTSes in the PC space.

quiet, you! EVERYONE CHOOSE SIDES

Yes, Blizzard is responsible for holding back the advance of PC technology. It's amazing we've gotten a new graphics card since the GeForce 2. ::)

I know tons of people that don't upgrade their PCs because they can still play Warcraft 3.

It was the same way with Diablo 2 or Starcraft 2.  Catering to gamers with low end systems is not good for PC gaming, imo.

Smooth: I think there needs to be a balance between advancement and sustainability. Sure games like Crysis push the envelope, but they arent what keep dollars and interest pouring into the PC space.

Whats not good for PC gaming is poor dx10 performance.

Yes, creating games that can run on a wide variety of systems and sell millions of copies worldwide is bad for the PC gaming market. Companies should make games like Crysis, that only run on a small number of systems and sell in the tens of thousands. That would really advance PC gaming. You are so smart.

Borys has it right - Blizzard may not do much for PC gaming, technology-wise; but they're doing EVERYTHING for PC gaming, market-wise.

Id also like to add that while WoW doesnt using many wizbang pc graphics, it looks 10x better than most games thanks to better art.
Title: Re: Dawn of War II looks fuck amazing
Post by: Smooth Groove on June 06, 2008, 01:58:39 PM
Crysis is extreme.  I'm thinking more about Half-life 2 or Company of Heroes.

What do I care about Blizzard games making lots of money.  That just basically make them PC gaming's Nintendo.

Their conservative approach to technology sucks for real PC gamers that upgrade every year.

Having a ton of systems on the market that can play WOW but not any graphically intensive game is not good for the direction of PC gaming.

Well most graphically aggressive games run like shit for most people. I dont think you'll win the argument from the angle of PC gaming as a BUSINESS. If you actually sit down and THINK about what WoW accomplishes for the millions and millions of its users you can find a lot to appreciate there.

For example, I would rather have Blizzards awesome support than some fancy pants lighting effect that may or may not work on my upper midrange system. Id rather have better art on an older game engine than better lighting textures on a newer one (ie age of conan is an ugly game artistically)

Ill shove a bit of the blame on retailers, who actively put PC games in the furthers corner of any store

Company of Heroes ... another great game that didn't sell anywhere near close to potential due to stringent hardware requirements.

The amount of copies Blizzard games sells isn't important because it makes Blizzard money ... it's important because it turns people who own PCs into PC gamers. It's not like a console, where if you buy the hardware, you're obviously dedicated to the idea of playing games. It's entirely possible to  own a PC and never even think of it as something capable of playing a game (this is more common than you might think in some countries). That's why making games that aren't state-of-the-art, tech-wise, is so important to the industry. Because if you can't run any games at all, you're never going to make that leap to a once-a-year upgrader.

One of the biggest, and most relevant arguments AGAINST PC gaming is the idea that a person has to upgrade all the time. As long as that isn't the reality, PC gaming will survive in one form or another.

Post by: Smooth Groove on June 06, 2008, 02:09:39 PM
Maf, you have a 8800 GTS, which is probably better than what most WOW players use.  There are lots of WOW players like PD that use a 128mb low end geforce 6 card.

Those guys can't play anything but WOW.

I get what you say about the business aspect but I just think it sucks for the hardcore PC gamer, kinda like how the WII sucks for console gamers.

As long as Blizzard keeps making games that can be played on $400 PCs, there're going to be lots of people that won't upgrade, which means a smaller market for

companies that want to make more technically ambitious games.

I just feel that many people would actually upgrade if Blizzard would make a game that forces them to do so.

That just makes me selfish not snobbish.

Although, I do agree with your opinion on Valve.

I was discussing with a producer at EA what a collossal fucking failure Crysis was.  Collossal.
It apparently sold 1,000,000 copies and is getting an xpac. Couldn't have failed that hard.

I didn't know Crysis cost $50,000,000 to make, super industry insider man.

edit: In fact I'm frankly shocked a bunch of mud hutters in Eastern Europe were able to rack up $50,000,000 in dev costs between wrapping up Far Cry and shipping Crysis.

I'm really impressed with the video, but I'm a little worried about Shawn Elliot's impressions on the GFW Podcast. I don't like the idea of not building bases. I'm hoping that the base building is just simplified, and this is still a traditional RTS. I like DoW a lot, so I'm not all that interested in a revolution.

I kind of played DOW and its various exp. packs to death (yet I never played internet mp  ??? ???); but I kind hope that the game will be more targetted at squad managements.

A turned-based W40k strat game would be ace.

Doesnt work on anything past windows 98, and no I'm not setting up a new virtual machine to play a videogame.

Pc gaming compatibility lol

Quote
1st thread posted under chaos gate solution

Right after a long grewling 6 hours of messing with setting try the following;

Uninstall

Re-install but ensure destination directory is eight charictors or less. I used (c:\chaos)

You must set Desktop resolution to 640x480,16 Bit colour, any refresh rate works up to 144 mhz

Use gpedit.msc to enable "run in seperate memory space" check box to run dialog box located under user configuration, administritive templates, start menu and task bar

Then goto start, run and type "command.com /c C:\chaos\WH40K.exe" without the quotation.

The game will now load and no longer crashes when the early level enimies fire.

Do not use the compatibility tool, always use the command line option. Even thou the compatibility tool enables the ability to load the game through windows but it will crash very early in to the game.

I fixed this problem on my PC for my friend as he is a great fan of war hammer games so all thanx to Luke.
:lol
