Title: akihabara stabbings
Post by: muckson on June 08, 2008, 10:21:43 AM
http://www.japantoday.com/category/crime/view/12-stabbed-others-hit-by-assailants-car-on-akihabara-street

not cool.

i thought it was pertinent since some of you have/do live in japan and most of us here are gamers that would go to a place like akihabara.  sure, nerds annoy me but i would never stab them.

Well, looks like I wont be moving to Japan to work with itagaki-san.

He'll just have to come to America and open a studio here.

people always say "well that about does it for Japan being safe" any time something like this happens.  this kind of thing is rare...

also, the stabber was an xfag who was fed up with RROD

Japan has never heard of knife control?  This would've never happened in America. SMH.

on a serious note, there has to be some sort of outlet for outcasts in japan.  If it's anything like the U.S. they should band together and be friends...then eventually become the cool kids by having their own outcast culture.

I'm watching NTV's Monday morning news, they're talking about the attacker's upbringing, and even went to his apartment. Looks like he was interested in fantasy gaming culture.

Again, proves how manly xbox fans are. Sony fans would just moan on LiveJournal, but this guy actually did something about it.

Oh dear at WW's gif.

Seven dead.  Kinda of unheard of in Japan.  Doesn't the country have one of the lowest rates of violent crime?  So it makes this especially puzzling.  Seems like an isolated wackjob.

Watch them blame violent Western games for this.  Clearly it was all because of GTA.

Thank fuck Japanese people don't have easy access to guns  :o

Yup. I used to joke about the lack of guns here, saying things like 'well, who ever heard of a drive-by KNIFING ha ha ha' but here it is, this guy did it. And it's very far from the first time there have been mass knifings here; this actually happened on the 10-year anniversary of the knifing of 7 children.

i tried to put myself in the places of those people and although i keep a good eye out around me for the most part, and i'm pretty perceptive, but the truth is he hit someone first by running a car up on the curb.  then he stepped out and started stabbing him.

THEN he went around stabbing people.

now while i may be the exception, keeping track of my surroundings, i don't see how even oblivious people could have missed this guy.  i don't know why they didn't run like hell.

i guess i have to see more of the report to see what happened.  there has to be an explanation for all this and i must be missing something.

My wife said yesterday that she is now scared to go to Akihabara.  And not from the maids and otaku this time, either!

A couple of hours after I heard about this I was in a convenience store and some creepy guy walked right up beside me and says 'Where from? Where from?' I freaked out and got the hell outta there. I'm so sick of weirdos.

I have had this happen in public toilets.  Two weeks ago, some creepy old dude started asking me shit in a hospital bathroom.

It happens at work, too.  I don't want dudes talking to me when I am whizzing.

There'll be an otaku backlash because he was a dork; there'll be a videogame backlash because he liked videogames; there'll be a foreigner backlash because he expressed himself as a freak in English.

Tokyo police have now issued a Hepatitis B warning. One of the victims was a Hep B carrier, which transfers by blood contact. Lots of people stopped to help with their bare hands, and the street was pretty much covered in blood...  :-\

Japanese culture sucks so much when you have the parents on TV, faces hidden off camera, apologising for the actions of their son. He's a grown adult, it's not your fault. There's only so much you can do when raising a child.

Then the TV show went into the knife shop where he bought his five knives on the day of the attack, went into great detail about the victims - apparently 3 died from the truck impact, and 4 from severe loss of blood (the neck slicing), or was it the other way around. Anyway, the other ten people are still alive, thankfully. Hope they pull through.

Parents and relatives are typically castigated in these cases, and are often driven to suicide. Bizarre reaction. Far too late to do any good.

He drove into a crowd with a truck first, most of the victims were stabbed before they could get up.

You sure it was 2001? I've heard this was, coincidentally, the 10th anniversary of that incident.

I (sort of) remember going to a concert in Dublin where some jackass started stabbing people. Of course, we didn't find out about it until after we left, which was almost more disturbing.
