I did the right thing and watched an awful pirated version.  Movie blows.  I didn't even finish it.

Stay home and play LEGO Indiana Jones instead.

Spoilers below, but nothing huge










Just got back home. I don't see how anyone could possibly justify the existence of that movie. Seriously. Was that all a joke? Perhaps the worst written film I've seen since Attack of the Clones.

The movie starts off well enough with the little drag race. Very nice camera work there (and throughout the film actually) but I couldn't help but notice the odd coloring. It seemed to work during that first feel-good-50s scene but once the action started it just looked out of place. Things were just too shiny.

Indy's introduction was so quick and non climatic I was simply shocked. And on a side note, how the fuck does a small group of Russian soldiers infiltrate the Fort Knox of top secret US artifacts? That was perhaps the first of many SMH moments in this movie. That entire warehouse scene was terrible. From the ridiculous lines to the stupid moments (like the magnetic cloud of bullets) I couldn't believe what I was seeing or hearing. And to top things off the whole atomic bomb thing...wow. What the fuck was that?

Overall the first 3/4s of the movie seemed so damn disjointed and poorly planned. Mutt's intro was pretty bad as well, and once again felt rushed. The previous three Indy films all did a great job with the scenes that explain the mulligan yet here it was bogged down by horrible acting by Shia and a rather bored Ford, who seemed like he slept walked through most of the movie.

I remember hearing that the film wouldn't have any CG, and if I wasn't tired I'd dig up those Manabyte/Cheebs posts trying to convince people that everything in the first trailer was real (LOL). Actually it's rather prominent and obvious in many scenes. Most of the action scenes fall flat regardless of whether they feature CG or not though, especially the two scenes involving crazy looking savage people. Sigh. Outside of the atomic bomb shit the most over the top part is probably the "three drop" water ride. It manages to look worse than the one in Temple of Doom. In fact, the entire movie reminded me of ToD in terms of being over the top in every aspect to distract you from how empty the movie is.

I haven't even discussed the plot, which was too stupid to mention. Overall I thought this was 30 minutes of interesting film mixed into an hour and a half of stupidity. I actually liked the race to the temple, as well as the stuff that happens in the temple (except the alien/spaceship fiasco, which I certainly didn't expect).  Temple of Doom is better. At least it had Short Round and a particularly badass Indy. I went in expecting the film to at least top ToD. That expectation went out the window 10 minutes into the movie, from Blanceht's laughably hammy performance to this:

Indy: I thought we were friends!

or whatever they said. My jaw fell open

I'm going to watch ToD tomorrow just to make sure, but off memory it's definitely better. My biggest problems with ToD concerned the over the top action and Mrs. Spielberg's screaming. Crystal Skull blows ToD out the water in terms of over the top action. Hell, it seemed like Spielberg watched POTC2/3 and said "fuck, I can do that." People on GAF are praising the "jungle scene" but it was almost exactly like the "jungle" scene in POTC2 - instead of sword fighting on a rolling wheel there's sword fighting on a couple cars. And when you add the TARZAN ROPE SWINGING in...wha? I laughed at the beginning of that part - when the monkey was looking at Shia like "you know you don fucked up." I didn't expect it to go any farther than that but then he starts fucking swinging? And then giant killer ants? Followed by a water ride? Then an indian chase?

ToD is harmless, a fun movie that isn't all that great but doesn't try to be either.  KotCS is just insulting to anyone in the audience with half a brain.

Even better, a sequel to Howard the Duck that's actually worse than the original.

Perhaps the main reason KOTCS strikes me as the inferior movie is because it was in development/consideration for so long. 20 years later this is the best they could come up with? This was the script that Spielberg/Ford thought was worth renewing the franchise over? I usually don't hate on Lucas but I cannot fathom how he could think this was a good script. I didn't like the story but it was definitely interesting, and could have been done well; the whole crystal skull myth should have been a good foundation.

I think Spielberg is a great director who has flaws as most directors do. As I said, there are some very nice shots throughout the movie, and there's no denying he's still talented. But to me this is an issue of JUDGMENT. Spielberg had a front row seat to Lucas' fuck up of the Star Wars franchise. I don't understand why he'd willingly go along with fucking up Indy. It's not the greatest trilogy ever, but Raiders is definitely a classic movie and Last Crusade is great as well (and I'd imagine it'll mean more to people as they grow older). This sequel wasn't needed. Last Crusade essentially did everything it tried to do.

When I left Indy 4 (I keep wanting to call it ID4 lol) I felt like it was the worst of the 4, but I just rewatched the whole first trilogy and ToD was waaaay shittier than I remembered it. At least 4 was entertaining, even though it was totally stupid.

I'm not married to the character and mythos and shit though so I don't feel like the movie raped my skull, just insulted my intelligence. Which ToD did too, but boringly. Although at least Harrison acted better in that one.

Hmm, Temple of Doom was my least favorite of the originals but I never really thought it was a bad movie. It had some frustrating annoying moments but the opening was grand as was the bridge scene at the end. Had it been the first, it may have been a little more well received but following up Raiders was a task in itself.  :-\

I rewatched ToD right before I saw Crystal Skull and felt the opposite. For the sheer amount of flaws that movie has it still had honest attempts at suspense, a memorable score, an opening adventure, actors that looked like they were having fun, a cold blooded Indy, and monkey brain soup.  The movie was fucking ridiculous but at least I can have some fun with it. There was nothing redeeming I can think of in KotCS that would make me want to watch it again. Well ok, I might rewatch it if RiffTrax does their thing to the movie.

I'm also probably more forgiving of ToD because it was followed by Last Crusade which was a more suitable followup and supposed ending to the series. So I've always looked at it as an odd ball adventure that's barely related to the other films. KotCS however is trying to follow the Indy storyline from Raiders and Crusade, and it is now the new ending to the series so in that sense I'm less forgiving of it's shittiness.

I haven't seen Kingdom of the Crystal Skull yet, but I'll compare it to Temple of Doom to see was it worth it. Needless to say the bar isn't very high. Of course most Indy fans seem to like Temple of Doom more, but most Indy fans also think Raiders is better than Crusade, so they can't be trusted.

Raiders is the best Indy film, Last Crusade is the most entertaining. Both are fuck awesome in my book.

John Dunbar is notorious for awful movie tastes, so don't worry about it.  Raiders is the best Indy flick.  Prole would say it's the only good Indy flick!

Agreed with all of this. It really faltered as the last chapter and the plot had issues given some of the preplanned doublecrosses extended to before the movie even started.  I'm glad Will's story is done though as I just want to watch Sparrow and Barbossa for 2 hours, not anyone else.

I hate people who hate Temple of Doom. Well, not hate, but I glare at them angrily.

PS. I saw KotCS for a second time this weekend with my parents (I was bored and they were paying) and enjoyed it much more the second time without expectations. Things were more exciting. There are still things that sucked, but it was overall an entertaining movie.

Oh, and Pirates of the Caribbean is like the Matrix: awesome first movie, sucky trilogy.
