I had an idea a few days ago. Most everyone on this forum reads seemingly interesting books and I was curious if anyone would be interested in doing a sort of secret santa for readers.
essentially you would be given a name, and you send them a book or two. the person who then receives the book reads it (or attempts to) and then writes up a little something about it.
this could be a neat way of having new authors introduced to you and could also be a way for you to proselytize a new author/book to someone or it could give you the excuse to get up off your butt and get rid of those horrible romance books you bought for the days that the world beats you down and you just need a hot lavender bath.
So, if anyone is interested, please let me know. I'd set the cut off for minimum involvement before i put this together is about 6 people, though it's not really an issue to organize.

I once started programming a website like this. You'd pass along a book and get a credit and then you'd be able to borrow a book from someone else and pass it along and you could track where the book was and hopefully people would write in it so you'd get this communtiy book experience. But this is a simpler fashion. I'm in.
-
hell yes, this sounds good.
i've enjoyed everything i've bought from an EB recommendation so far, and stuck here in Japan, I don't get many recommendations via casual conversation, tv, radio etc. If we order from amazon, there shouldn't be much in the way of shipping costs to worry about, even between countries. You just order from the amazon in the recipient's country.
How do we check if the person has read the book before or not though? I've been on the planet for a while, and have read a fair amount...
-
I'm definitely in.
-
I'm so in right now
-
sure, i'll do it
-
ok, sweet.
i'll keep registration or interest open for the rest of the week and then i'll sit down and think about how this will actually work
-
I would like to join, but I'm in Holland and I only own a handful of English books.
-
that shouldn't stop you
-
Well, consider me interested.
-
Sounds awesome, I'll do it.
-
I'm down.
-
Oh, just a small tip for people wanting to jump on board:
When I lend out books, please please please take the best care you possible can. Even the smallest creases and tears drive me insane in even a single page of a book. I just go nuts over the condition of my books.
-
Can we say no overtly political books? (This isn't just aimed at you FoC)
I can still get rid of my excess copies of Atlas Shrugged.
-
This isn't a lending system, it is a giveaway.
yeah, this was meant to be a give away not a trade.
as for type of books i guess we could make individual requests in this thread and i can keep the OP updated.
i'm certain the last thing anyone wants to receive is some religious tract.
unless it's batshit insane. then it may be cool

Is this a way for me to unload some of my Hegel books?

i'll take philosophy of history if you have it.

I only have Lectures on Aesthetics and Phenomenology of Spirit, along with a number of books on the Phenomenology.
-
Yea, I'm down. I don't have an extensive library or anything, though.

It's out of everyone's league; his works are poorly-written obscurantism. Thank god for Charles Taylor's book on Hegel or I wouldn't have been able to write a semi-coherent paper on that German fraud.
-
i'm writing a deployment strategy for enterprise level clients for our voip system, so i think i'll lead with some hegel.
-
and here we go
“The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.”

Oh wait...really? Damn then...count me out :(

You don't have any books you're willing to part with?

i think he may be a librarian
-
and i think i just picked out the book i'm going to send
-
I have a bunch I'm definitely willing to send out.
Mostly ones that are either worn or *gasp* written in (for school). :P
-
i'm in assuming i don't have to send anything
unless you want CR Stam classics :bow

I've only begun to amass a collection. Bad timing.
-
I usually give my books away anyway, but lately I've been doing the penurious library thang, so my collection is slim and most of what I've retained are tomes and hardcovers I'm hesitant to part with. I could probably scrounge up something though. Count me in.

The pile on the left is books I've read (Although Cat's Cradle and Haunted are missing, because I'm lending the former out and I returned the latter), the pile on the right are books I have yet to read.
...
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

The only books I'm looking to get rid of are pretty much aimed at teenage girls, so count me out. Excellent idea, though!

It's funny this thread came up .. I just culled my shelves of these and was going to give them to Goodwill. So, feel free to take any (or all) of these books. Almost all of them are worth a read, some are excellent.

The Chuck Palahnuik book is Lullaby. Which is not that great.
The Colin Powell book was a gift I never read.
The P.Dick book is a collection of writings. Not a cohesive story.
-
We allowed to start claiming books?
I want T.R. and Guns, Germs, and Steel! :D
-
TR is awesome, you will love it.
Just PM addys and I will get them out Thursday or Friday.
-
:rock
I'll post the books I'm willing to part with tomorrow.
-
How is that Shifting Realities of PKD? I've seen it in stores a bunch of times, but I always skipped it because I didn't know whether it was worthwhile or not. If it's unclaimed, I'll go for that.
-
I'd definitely be interested in the Hegel, but, um, I'm not sure I've got any books I want to part with. =\
-
I'll take The Gangs of New York if nobody else wants it.

which is the perfect way to get rid of them!
