when I woke up this morning and walked to my car I saw a little yellow piece of paper on the windshield. At first I thought it was a ticket, then I read the flyer. What a waste of time and money, not to mention a breach of my privacy.

Good job man!
-
ha
nice.
-
Ya, I'm sure they were just trying to protect you and not looking for anything to charge you on. ::)
-
It's Austin. Who are they going to bust? the drunkards on 6th Street? Or the hippies smoking weed at Marleyfest and on the river?
-
fuck the police
-
Ya, I'm sure they were just trying to protect you and not looking for anything to charge you on. ::)
So should police be able to search your computer? I mean they are only trying to protect you.
-
Coming straight from the underground.

I'm guessing they are looking for contraband. WTF do police care what non illegal items you have in your car.
-
I dont know, mind if I go through our car?
-
GO ahead. You may find some lolipop sticks from the kids, and candy wrappers in the back. Some CDs in the middle console, and a couple of water bottles in the passenger seat. If I lived in the city, I would take my Sirius radio with me out of the car.
Just don't look under the driver seat.
-
A young nicca got it bad 'cause I'm brown
-
Send some to Oakland plz.
-
fucking gay.
you should take the leaflet and put it on a parked cop car, or make a mock one
-
YOU WERE VIOLATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
hrmm, that might actually be consider a search w/ out warrant I would most def look that up.
I'd personally take that to the police station and bitch my head off.
-
this type of search seems unreasonable to me, but i think if an officer has a legal right to be somewhere, he is allowed to make plain-view searches, and if he wants, seize contraband.
-
It's still a waste of time and tax money.
-
you should be able to do something about it. thats bs, id still bitch.
-

Plain sight is fair game iirc. You can look but you can't touch.

Wrong Police I was thinking about. I have Rock Band on the brain so I came in here expecting this:

Instead I got this:

Same. I was so thinking that they had announced a new album or something. Also, the fact that the word 'police' is capitalized in the thread title could be what caused my computer.

wtf, paranoiacs! the cops are just looking in the windshield/windows to see if you have any shit that might encourage folks to break in. they are not doing this to look for your stash of meds/weed/kiddy porn/fursuits. if they do this and let people know there's a risk, it reminds anyone in the area with thievish intentions that folks are watching, and it also encourages you to be proactive. this isn't fuckin' wiretapping. they aren't opening your car up. fuck, i'd appreciate this in our area!
-
Prole is right, they are just looking from the outside, because there's an out of control epidemic of stuff being stolen from cars like that.
Don't be distinguished mentally-challenged.
-
Whew thats good to know. And here I thought I was responsible for my stuff...
-
fuck the police
Bring it, bitch. :punch
-
good thing you're an island! the rest of us don't mind having cops do something positive and community-oriented for a change.
-

Doubt it. Plain view doctrine.

Drinky, as usual, brings the gawdamned common sense.
I mean, this is a crime prevention/awareness effort. It should be lauded as probably more effective than reporting to police AFTER somebody has ripped off something from your car. Because chances are, we ain't going to find SHIT after the fact.
-
good thing you're an island! the rest of us don't mind having cops do something positive and community-oriented for a change.
You honestly don't realize what a colossal waste of time this is for cops? Do I really fucking need a note saying that I am doing A-ok? I'm more upset about the waste of tax-payers money and time than the privacy thing.
-

I guess the definition of responsibility is lost on you.

It's not a waste of time. And :lol @ the "waste of taxpayers money" line.
If that was your actual primary concern, you would have fucking SAID THAT IN THE OP, rather than spitting out the bullshit about "invasion of privacy"
-
It's a show of force. Do you realize what an even bigger waste of time some inbred Texan leaves his shotgun in his backseat and someone steals it? The amount of money spent on that is probably 2 days of writing notes. smh.
It would be a waste of a 20 minute phone call. I've had stuff stolen before and they can't do anything.

This just in, Boogie can't read.
-
Well its either this or have distinguished mentally-challenged fellows call in stuff stolen from their car with absolutely no description of who did it but still having the unrealistic expectation that they will get some closure through the police.
This is probably carried out by meter maids anyway, its not like they're deploying SWAT to peek in your car.
-
Yes, im sure all the flyers is preventing a whole lot of crime... ::)

Sorry, I was blinded by your general idiocy. Your emphasis was on the privacy bit at first though.

In which case, maybe the solution is.....*gasp*, try to educate people to PREVENT crime! :o

If grown adults dont know that people steal shit from unlocked cars then they are distinguished mentally-challenged.

so? People are distinguished mentally-challenged.
-
Its not about preventing the crime itself so much as preventing an environment in which crime can flourish. God forbid PEOPLE are expected to WATCH THEIR FUCKING SHIT.
-
I forgot about all the 6 year olds leaving their uncovered wads of $100 bills in unlocked cars. I guess I should consider them.
-
what are you even arguing at this point?

colossal waste of time? as maf noted, it's probably being done by the meter maids anyway, but still, it's a cop's JOB to peek around looking for potential issues. it ain't costing you any addt'l money to have them look in your car while on beat patrol, and it's probably saving a fair bit in the way of useless after-the-fact investigations. if you're so affronted by some tacit insult to your pompous sense of libertarian pride, perhaps you can ask them to keep a running tally of WHO IS A RESPONSIBLE PERSON and WHO IS NOT on your street. what's a little profiling if it keeps your feelings from getting hurt, eh?
dumb. fuck.
-
also, why "unlocked" cars? most casual thieves don't give a shit about a car's locked/unlocked state. smash and grab, motherfucker, and we're all the poorer!
-
I'm just going by what the flyer said.
-
I need a flyer to tell me that sometime people steal shit because I'm an idiot.
-
i'd rather have cops look through my shit unprovoked rather than thieves, especially if all they are doing is leaving me friendly reminders not put my ipod in plain view rather than shattering my passenger window and taking whatever they can get in 30 seconds or less
and again, they aren't opening up my car -- they're doing what everyone else does: LOOK. WITH THE EYES.
-
"Looking through your shit?" You mean looking through the windows of your car, which was parked on a public street? "Looking through your shit" implies that they took your possessions in their fascist hands and examined them. They were looking at your shit, which was in plain view!
I need a flyer to tell me that sometime people steal shit because I'm an idiot.
People get careless. Maybe if it is brought to their attentions, they'll change their habits.
-
I need a flyer to tell me that sometime people steal shit because I'm an idiot.
you ARE an idiot. they are ALSO implicitly telling you that a) car-related crimes happen in this area; b) the cops are looking out for you in an effort to help; and c) they're using your tax dollars to proactively prevent crime as opposed to sitting on their thumbs waiting for shit to happen. but what do you take out of it? "OH NO THE COPS DON'T TRUST ME! THEY THINK I'M AN IDIOT."
i'd say they're pretty good at their job.
-
I was gonna take a shower but I need someone from the city leave a flyer on my door telling me how often I need to bathe and take dumps.
-
Next the cops will be shooting criminals on your property. It's my property, and I have mah guns, I can shoot them. Do they assume I don't have guns or property? Communists.
-
Now I need a flyer telling me step by step how to lock my door. I mean the flyers are supposed to inform us right?

another classic FoC vs everybody else thread. You do this on purpose dont you?

But the police weren't telling you to be cautious--they were asking you to be cautious for your own benefit. You can leave your car unlocked and leave diamonds on the driver's seat if you really want!
Now I need a flyer telling me step by step how to lock my door. I mean the flyers are supposed to inform us right?

Attention whore.

Well it's either them or us, take your pick.

I was going to say that his insistence that it's an attack on him and not, you know, a service in the interest of preventing crime suggests a narcissistic mindset, and I suppose the attention whore label meshes well with that observation.
-
I would just like to point out once again that we didn't have to deal with shit like this when it couldn't make threads. Good job, Willco!
-
I'd do it myself if I wasnt confined to this horrific hybrid icon/administrator account.
-
Willco created this unholy iconistrator account for me, I cannot exist in either world.
-
:lol Oh come on guys my threads arent that bad.
-
right? right?
:(
-
OMG, POLICE CAN LOOK IN THE WINDOW OF YOUR CAR JUST LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING PASSING BY!!! :o :o :o
:constitutioncry
-
FoC never admits when he's wrong.
-
Cause im never wrong.
-
Guys, didn't you hear? Justice is blind. Therefore, cops shouldn't be allowed to look at things. Q.E.D.!
-
I was going to say "didn't they just look in your window?".
But I see everyone else said it a million times.
-
I think from now on you need to keep a big black dildo and other homosexual items in your car. That way the police have to write all that stuff down. Who knows, they might even leave their personal number.
worrying about them finding a big black dildo in the car is what got him so pissed off in the first place.
-

I agree. :)
-
I don't get the logic here. Let's say you DO have some of the items listed on the inspection paper in your car, and the cop sees them.
You now have a list of items for thieves to steal in plain sight on your car. Good job, police!
-

If the items are in plain sight, thieves wouldn't need to refer to the list. It's not like the thieves would need the help.

Yeah but how many thieves are going to look at papers to see what's in your car? They will probably think it's a parking ticket.
-
It certainly isn't of any benefit to the car owner.
-
it is, because sometimes there can be a rash of thefts of stuff you consider wholly unvalued, like school books or parking permits. is that worth a busted window?
-
oh, and as my reactions in the "asshole eating tips" thread demonstrate, i'm not even down with my wife looking through my shit unprovoked
-
FoC, go to the head shop and buy a clean bowl to leave in your ash tray. It should be funny to see these protectors reaction.
-
Thieves can't read so the point is moot.

Thieves can't read english in Austin so the point is moot.
Fixed
-
the slip also has the benefit of announcing to criminals that the cops are patrolling for vehicle break-ins, and to go find new ground
-
foc is dangerous company to keep
one minute it's "lol shopping list for crooks," and the next thing you know you're pretending it's 1776 and wearing a tin foil hat while talking to the ghost of thomas jefferson about the bohemian grove

he really needs a re-lepering. we just have to accept that he enjoys taking the side opposite of everybody else. he doesn't care if he's not rational, he wants to just get attention. accusing cops of invading your privacy by leaving a note like this is a way of getting attention and he knows that everybody will think he's an idiot (at least on this forum).
he really should be a leper again. It does not take 100 posts to convince somebody to change their attitudes a little on THIS..unless you're responding to FoC.
-
Cause im never wrong.
Fuck. Threads like these make me wish that FOC was still lepered. He's a fucking dumbass.
