Title: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on June 12, 2008, 01:26:40 AM
I am reinstalling Diablos II right now. Other EB people who wish to join me are more than welcome. Despite the hundreds of hours I've put into this game, only a fraction of that was multi. Join in!

RULES:
1) We're playing with locally stored characters, not Realm (Battle.net) characters.
2) This doesn't mean you can be a character hacking assmunch.
3) We're playing on Open Battle.net

Game Name: evilbore
Password: himumu

Diablos II: Play it again for the first time! (Or in Himumu's case, for the first time.)

Open Battle.net Configuration

Diablo II uses year 2000 Internets, so it can be tricky to get working. Follow these steps:

1) Add Diablo II.exe to your Firewall Exceptions
2) Add Battle.net ports to your Firewall Exceptions (http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=21219)
3) Configure your router to forward ports 4000 and 6112-6119 to your computer IP. (Both TCP and UDP.)

Characters
Herod - Barbarian, Synthesizer Patel

We'll play on b.net, but as "Open Battle.net" using our single player characters, rather than pure Battle.net characters.

Copy the contents of the CD to a folder on your desktop and run from there.  If you get a CRC fail again while copying data, then your disk is teh fubar.  Just borrow one from someone (you know all your friends have this game too), or, uh, 'acquire' another copy of the disk for installation (probably 10 mins tops on your favorite p2p client).  The game will still play fine off a disk that fails CRC checks on .mpq files.

Disk is fuxed, already tried that.

"Acquiring" a "copy" right now for installation purposes.

Act 3 :(

Act 3 is just impossible for me to finish. I think I've done it like ONCE out of the last four or five times I attempted to play through D2. It's just that bad. Act 2, with its endless expanse of tiled desert and bug caves, is only marginally better.
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: CajoleJuice on June 12, 2008, 02:02:46 PM
I think I finished Act 3, but then I dropped my loot for some reason, and then saved and exited without picking it back up. I had built my character around that wand. FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK

I never played the game again.

I'm only level 3 right now, so I'll wait a while before joining the EB game.

that's cause I'm at WORK and not PLAYING right now

if the game's not up, just start it with the name/pass in the topic

again, we are using SINGLE PLAYER characters with OTHER MULTIPLAY

these are NOT BATTLE.NET CHARACTERS

any suggestions for a Barb build? I'm thinking I should go dual-wield and heavy into whirlwind? Plus a few points in Warcries to help the party. 8)

Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II

it's like PSO or something - small, instanced games that you play with other people

no overworld or anything

I suggest that people always make a multiplayer game with the name/pass in the OP while they're playing so that other people can join

we can join together pretty easily

I spent the past couple of hours cruising through various fields and dungeons, taking out chumps and getting the phat loots. So far I've only really found one item that's really all that good, it's a sash that's ZOMG AWESOME and worth a hefty sum of cash, not that I'd part with it anytime soon. I'm at level 10 and getting close to level 11, just save Deckard Cain.

I'll probably be back online in an hour or so.
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: Great Rumbler on June 12, 2008, 06:22:59 PM
I played it some not too long after it came and finally beat the last dungeon. It's been a long time since I played it, so I can't remember too much about how long I played although I do remember that I did some multiplayer.

I have it set to US West, but I'm going to Other Multiplayer -> Open Battle.net

That's exactly what I've been doing too. I even had a game going in Open Battle.net called "Evilbore"!

Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on June 12, 2008, 11:23:12 PM
okay, once I hit the next waypoint, let's figure this shit out

k, I just made a game called Evilbore on Open Battle.net. my settings are US West, though that shouldn't matter. can you see/join it?

when I create it, I can't modify the max players - it remains empty and greyed out. could that be part of it?
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: Great Rumbler on June 12, 2008, 11:38:17 PM
Okay, the game is definitely there, but every time I try to join it will load for a few seconds and then give me an error message that says "Failed to Join Game". Maybe I could create a room and then you could try to join it?
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on June 12, 2008, 11:39:02 PM
try it again right now if you could...

I changed it to evilbore/himumu (all lowercase, to reduce chance of error)

try typing the game name/password in directly into the slots at the top, not looking for it in the list
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II
Post by: Great Rumbler on June 12, 2008, 11:45:26 PM
That's what I'm doing. It finds the game and then starts loading it, but as soon as it's almost finished loading the game kicks me out and I get and error message saying that it failed to load. I tried going into a random game and it worked just fine, so I don't know what's going on.

Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II

this same problem occurs with warcraft 3. you can join anyone's game, but you have to configure some stuff to create your own. iirc, you go to connections and properties on your connection, then on the network tab you have to check all the options. you also have to deactivate windows firewall or add the program to it, though i can never do that right.

that only works if you're using a bridge though. with a router, you have to manually open all the tcp and udp ports used by wc3 - or in this case, d2 - to be able to host.

when i used to play this with my friends, one of us hosted and the rest joined by connecting to his ip manually. why don't you just do that?

to see the ports it uses: http://portforward.com/cports.htm

is Axe Mastery what I want? I figure I need to choose one mastery and stick with it (of course)

I'm mostly saving my points for a WW build
Title: Re: Let's Play: DIABLOS II

I started with ax mastery and just dumped a lot of points into. You probably need to stick with one: ax, sword, or mace. Otherwise your points get diluted.
