Title: For the Love of the Himu: What Important Games Have Ye Passed Over?
Post by: Van Cruncheon on June 12, 2008, 06:23:18 PM
our beluvved himumu wants suggestions. he's missed the diablo series, which is a tragedy, given that diablo 2 + expansion is THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME PERIOD. this is objective fact, btw, and really not up for dispute.

what else, chiggers?

as for me, i've never seriously played any metal gear or metal gear solid game other than the two ac!d games and mgs3 subsistence, all of which I completed.

Haven't played a single Final Fantasy game, but I'm not sure can you call those important.

Generally avoid all western RPGs (baldur's gate, planescape, oblivion). I did play Baldur's Gate 2 for about 20 minutes before stopping in disgust.

No X-Com or Ultima makes baby Jesus cry.

I've never played Bard's Tale either.  There is probably alot more I haven't played.  have to think.

in my defense, i downloaded xcom on steam and found it unplayable

i do, however, love turn based strategy games of that sort.

like syndicate

I haven't played System Shock 1 or 2, even though I've owned 1 for well over a decade, and 2 since... not long after it came out.

Also, like many others here, I've missed out on most PC games aside from FPS's and Blizzard games.  I really, really want to get into old PC games tho.

I didn't get to play a TON of point-and-click adventures in the mid 90s because of my relatively limited finances as a teenager - so I lived off demos and playing a bit on other peoples computers.  I only got to play bits of:

Money Island
Day of the Tentacle
The Dig
Full Throttle
Grim Fandango

I just realised most of those are Lucasarts.  Amazing to think that once upon a time they weren't worthless.

Thankfully I had some like Myst, 7th Guest and Bad Mojo - such awesome games in the day.

I've pretty much got consoles covered. I'm a console fiend, and an expert at console games. PC...not so much.

These are the games in my pc game collection:

Sam and Max
System Shock 1 and 2
Grim Fandango
Day of the Tentacle
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Baldurs Gate II + expansion (shitty version I got which came with no goddamn manual :maf)
Fallout 1 and 2
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale (I haven't even played this and I've had it for a long while)
Deus Ex
Half Life 1 + Blue Shift + Counterstrike
Full Throttle
Another World (Out of this World) hd version
The Dig
Gabriel Knight trilogy
Monkey Island 1-3

That's really it. Those are the only pc games I own. I've downloaded Leisure Suit Larry 7 but it always freezes on me.

I've never played Civilization except for a demo for Civ 4 which Frag highly suggest I check out a year ago. I enjoyed it. It was interesting and unique. I've been meaning to get the retail game for the longest. I've never played Sim City aside from a few sessions at Ed's (mupepe) place back when we were in High School. I've never played Command and Conquer. I've never played X-Com. I've never played Warcraft. I downloaded Starcraft a few years back and I thought it SUCKED HARD. I've never played Black and White. I've never played most of the big name pc games and it makes weep at night because I'm a sad excuse for a gamer.

I got Duke Nukem 3d for Christmas 1997 and it was my first fps, well, that would be a lie. I played Doom back in 4th and 5th grade (around 1995/1996) but I didn't really get into it much. No one fucks with Duke Nukem. Duke Nukem 1 and 2 (2d) rock as well.

Of course, my most memorable pc game moment is Oregon Trail. I played that every day in elementary school. And Put Put mother fuckers. No one fucks with Put Put! And Math Blaster!

This post epitomizes my lack of pc gaming knowledge. I really wanna get into it but I lack a good computer. PC games that are on my list to play right fucking now:

The Witcher
Neverwinter Nights 2 + expansion
Still Life  - I played the demo and it rocked hard, definitely my type of adventure game!
Civilization 4 + expansions - played the demo and it owned
Diablo 2 + expansion - dling demo now
Titan Quest 2
Sim City 2000

Well, if this thread is talking about games we only made it to the halfway point (or less)...I've passed over 99.9% of everything that's been released since Return Fire.

Most major releases of the past 3 years or so, across consoles and PCs.

Have not, will not ever play WoW or any Tom Clancy games. Generally do not play any sports games. Haven't really played an RTS since Starcraft, and I'm fine with that. Haven't played a GTA since III. Abandoned Okami and Zelda TP after a few hours each. Do not care about Burnout, Gran Turismo, Prince of Persia, Halo, DMC.  I did play NSMB, which made me feel better about skipping anything and everything Mario-related since and including Mario 64.

As for stuff I actually regret missing:

I've never got past the Statue of Liberty scene in Deus Ex.  :-\
I have a copy of NWN2 that I haven't started and mean to play. Likewise for Arcanum and Vampire: BL: TM. And Ninja Gaiden Black.
I bought Steel Battalion and its controller for $50 a few months ago and haven't found the time to get a proper table and hook it up.
I need to pick up FES so that I can actually start Persona 3.
I still want to play Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Oh, in spite of being a survival horror fan, I've missed the entire Silent Hill series.  Just by circumstance really of them not coming down in price for a long time and then I'd forget about them.

Oh man, I highly suggest checking out SH2 and 3. 4 is playable, and incredibly underrated/hyped. SH1 has aged so goddamn badly. Stay the fuck away.

I've never played Thief

while i have played every RE except Code Veronica, I have never BEAT ANY ONE. I used to fucking hate oldschool RE, but I popped in RE1 (non directors cut version) and I can kind of see the appeal now. The whole adventure game thing is something that I obsess with these days so I find that aspect appealing even though the fighting sucks. Maybe I should give oldschool RE another try.

I would get into Silent Hill, but I don't want to buy more games for previous gen, just because my backlog is ridiculous.  I'm desperately hoping SH5 makes a miraculous turnaround because it was going to be my first foray into the series.  Even if it looks ugly I'll get it if the gameplay is good.

No, I missed it unfortunately.  I've downloaded Dreamfall on the 360, but I understand it's fairly different to the first game and not really comparable.

That reminded me of another series I missed - The Journeyman Project.  I played a demo of the second game and the puzzles seemed pretty difficult but logical.  I think I would have had a lot of fun with it.

As far as big games go I missed out on Pokemon and System Shock. I usually try to give eveything a shot at some point so I might play those later this year. Some old franchises I started playing for the first time this year have been:

Turrican series
Planescape
Most of the Ys games
SMT Nocturne

Never finished a Mario, Zelda, Metroid, RE, Baldur's Gate, Sim-anything, or Sonic game.  Never have even played any JRPG, RTS, Blizzard game, or Pokeman.  I've owned at least one system every generation since Atari 2600, but until the XBOX, I was never a serious gamer.  Did go through a period of playing the early FPSs and flight combat games on PC, and loved sports games on PC and consoles until they became needlessly complicated.

I won't ever play another Blizzard game or RTS ever again too

and I just started Planescape Torment too, I love it, it's like a fucked up Dungeons & Dragons version of The Little Prince with all the quirky characters that teach you their own creeds and life lessons through live metaphors
