Title: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: MrAngryFace on June 16, 2008, 11:02:26 PM
I didn't give this game enough of a chance. I let the love of trolling Himu-chan override my desire to play fun games. It wasn't until hour 6 that I realized Persona 3 has a lot in common, in terms of gameplay mechanics, with my beloved .Hack games. Yes yes, most everything is done BETTER, but I find the similarities endearing. Plus the game kinda hooked me for good when I watched the semi-omniscient lady dump bags of coins into every fountain at the mall. Plus I kinda wanna help that kid get some teacher sex.

persona 3 didn't take with me the first time, either. fes adds just enough addt'l content to move the game from annoying animu gannt planner to amusing rpg.

Are you dating the swim team captain yet?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
This game had a lot of legitimately good dungeon crawling, hard battles, and a good combat system.  It was the forced, saccharine sim stuff that turned me off.
[close]

Really?  Because I think the dungeon crawling is the game's weakest link.  The dungeons are so bland.  They're just really simple mazes with no character or traps or a sense of loot collection.

Like .Hack, and I played 6 games of that! never finished GU :/

Post by: Van Cruncheon on June 17, 2008, 12:08:22 AM
yeah, i thought the dungeon crawling kinda sucked. the game was best in the boss battles, or when you're fuckin' around trying to make overpowered personas and stack skills. fes added a few more social links, which leaves a little less open time in the schedule and forces you to make compromises rather than min-max the gannt chart and then spend whole weeks grinding the same floors for persona ranks.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Van Cruncheon on June 17, 2008, 12:09:16 AM
.hack had traps, and was fuckin' HARD! the random mazes were a lot longer, too, and required some serious planning and survival skillz.

I do like Persona 3, mind y'all.  I was just mildly disappointed because I was expecting SMT Mysterious Dungeon, and that's not what I got.  After I cleared my head and accepted that the game wasn't what I was expecting, I approached it again and enjoyed what I played.

the dungeon crawling isn't that hot, I admit. But there's this thing about it that addicts me. that whole WHAT THE HELL IS AT THE TOP thing.

i had the same reaction, too, although i never got over being pissed that the simulated classmates think you're COOL for being a smarty nerd, instead of beating your ass in the hallway for being an ass-kissing know-it-all punk. still, fes added the awesome student council commu link with the machivellian vice president, and you get to help him with his inquisition :bow2 :bow2

edit: oops, i am wrong, he was in the original too :'(

One other thing I don't quite like is that in some social interactions, the results of your dialogue selections don't always bring predictable responses.  That might seem like a bitch boy complaint (because unpredictability is supposed to be a part of some games), but as an RPG min/max-type player, that means I have to reload my fucking game and find out which response is best.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: MrAngryFace on June 17, 2008, 12:18:28 AM
you can usually guess what they wanna hear. The japanese are all about growing up and flattery. Basically if any question involves serious life implications, you pull the toughen up moron card. Anything like 'do i look teh pretty' you pull the 'SURE YOU DO' card.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Van Cruncheon on June 17, 2008, 12:18:51 AM
tvc: i dunno about that, the responses are based on the simple personality archetype of the character. the track kid likes you to taunt him so he can get pumped about you being his rival; the geek girl is afraid of contact; the nazi council kid wants you to say amoral things to support his reign; etc etc

that said, one thing ALWAYS HOLDS TRUE: never tell any of the bitches that they look fat. COMMU RANK DOWN

Maybe you're right.  It's been long enough since I played that I can't cite specific examples, but I do recall it happening.  Maybe it was just before I knew the characters well.

you have to assume a different persona every time you talk to someone. so basically, just recognize their personalities and what they want and answer what they wanna hear. Sometimes you may pick a wrong answer but hey, you may be able to level them up next time.

don't even play the Answer, there's NO content in it! 99% of it is just stupid level grinding and the few story bits that are in it are really absolutely awful, plus all the bosses are mundane enemies with palette swaps

just watch the ending on youtube if you're that curious, but then again there's really nothing to see... bring on P4

I was pretty skeptical of this game after all the bashing it received from some people here but having now put 30 hours into it I quite enjoy it. I still like Nocturne's tone and battle system more, but P3's world is pretty engrossing to me in a very cheesy kind of way. More so than most other JRPG's that shove their plot into your face. The only flaws I really see with the game is the randomly generated floors of the tower and not being able to have direct control over your party (their not really severe problems just things I would've done differently).

Lay it to me straight, guys. Is this game worth getting? I might pick it up tonight at work. I've had an itch for a good RPG lately. I'm thinking about either getting this or Wild Arms 1 off PSN, however this game is supposedly amazing. Plus it'd only be like $20 or so.

Huh, this game is pretty great! I just finished the first level of the dungeon and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm thinking about picking up SMT: Nocturne now since it's on amazon. How does that one compare?

EDIT: Ah, whatever. I ordered it. I can't pass up a hard to find game. I still have Suikoden I and II, which I'm going to sell to a friend soon for hundreds of dollars.

I'm now ~17 hours in. But I don't really know what I'm playing. It's fun, that's for sure. I just don't understand the social skills.
Do I have to focus on all character's ss or is it better to max out one character's ss?

I can now create lvl 19 persona's. The game is very addictive and I like Elizabeth's requests. Don't mind the dungeon crawling either in this game, but the characters get tired too fast. WTF is this shit, I want to grind...
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Himu on June 30, 2008, 07:15:49 AM
focus on the people in the school the first half. you'll have plenty of time to focus on people outside school later. for now, just work on your favorite people in school.

My guys stopped getting too tired like at level 5. I was 80 hours in the next time they got tired and I was like wtf because I entirely forgot the game even had that feature.

I like to spread my tartarus visits though.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Third on June 30, 2008, 07:25:59 AM
Huh, your characters never get tired?  ???
My characters (at least one of them) gets tired by each tartarus visit. Maybe I'm grinding too much...especially when a new tartatus block is opened.

Well ok, I think I'm going to max out the school social skills. I'm going to miss the old geezers in the bookstore though.  :'(
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Himu on June 30, 2008, 07:42:08 AM
it all depends on playstyle.

I try not to do too much during the day. If I know I'm going to Tartarus that day, I take a nap instead of answering the questions. I only go when my guys are their best, and I spread Tartarus visits for specific reasons. I typically run through the entire block until I reach a boss floor without fighting too many enemies, although I do for a bit so I can guage what I'm up against and change my Persona roster as needed. I pick up any treasure and cash on the way too. When I get to the boss floor, I teleport back down, save. I do this so that whenever my guys are in need to be healed, I can always be transported to the first floor without losing progress since I already made it to the boss floor. Easier that way.

Then I go "grind" for a bit, to test myself and see if I have to change up my roster. Then if I'm feeling prepared I go and fight the boss. When I eventually beat the boss, sometimes I'll continue on for a bit. Then I go check my spoils, visit Igor, and make any necessary changes to my roster. Leave, come back the next day, repeat, and concentrate on the next set of bosses. When I finish up a block then I concentrate on Liz's requests.

I know some people who go to Tartarus once a month. I think that's boring so I don't do it. I found that if I spread my visits it makes the game more fun. If you go once a month, and then only concentrate on day time that makes a pretty fucking boring rpg, so every visit I make to Tartarus, I have a specific goal in mind. My guys never get tired that way.

Of course, you probably have an entirely different play style.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Himu on June 30, 2008, 07:50:53 AM
i actually LIKE it when my guys get tired.

one time i fought one of the hardest bosses in the game tired.

and the pay off...omg. so surreal. It makes the game that much harder. I highly suggest fighting some bosses tired, because it increases the difficulty significantly. omg

this gaaaaaaame :heartbeat :heartbeat :heartbeat

Some poeple visit tartarus once a month?  :lol :lol :lol

I visit the dungeon as much as possible. When I get the chance, at least 2 times a week. I don't sell my items for money(I have like a gazillion short swords and practice bows) and I don't know how to make any money besides exploring the dungeon floors. So I need to visit the place to get some cash for the equipment.

The game is pretty funny and the voice acting is actually pretty good! The only thing I don't like is the worldmap music. Ugh, I can't get it out of my head. TURU TU TU TUUUU. The velvet room and the school music are my favorites.

I'm currently on the 3rd block.

Yeah. If you go to Tartarus on the night before a full moon your guys don't get tired. So some people decide to just go to Tartarus then and do all the crap then and there. Me, I find that boring.

I do hour long runs of the tower from level 1 to 70+ that im at now. Just enter, scatter, then take stairs rinse repeat. You get rare chests and rare monsters along the way. I have at least 4 of these 'loot' visits a cycle. My characters are always in the latest n greatest. Only hard fight was on level 35ish I think with the guardian there. Every other 'boss' has been ez.

Plus as you get a bigger team you can port back at the 2-way teleporters, get your hp and mana back for free, then teleport back in...switching out tired characters for rested ones on floor 1.

I finally maxed out Yuko and she gave my character a blowjob. The first summer break sequence was awesome. I sabotaged stupei so bad.

Great Condition - Shrine - Study Before Bed

How do I get a Great condition? Mine's always Good or Tired. Only Akihiko had Great once. ???
My characters even get Sick sometimes.

And yeah, I need to sell the items. I thought I could fuse all items, that's why I kept them. Seems I can only fuse items with persona's and gems. lol i'm going to sell all my irrelevant armory now.

My max Yen was 127k. I have 72k Yen now. I'll be filthy rich after I sell my equipment holy shit I have so many of them.

Damn, played this game yesterday for 6 hours straight after an one week break.  :lol

I need my main character to get tired for a Request. But damn, he just won't get tired. What is this shit. When I want him to get tired, he never gets tired. And when I don't want him to get ired, he alwasy breaks down. I was tired in tartarus, went to the dorm and chose to study to get him extra tired. But the next day he's fine. :-\

I just completed the second Tartarus block. Got the document. Can't go any further, need to wait for the next full moon. Damn, that's still two in-game weeks away...
And I sold my items, I'm quite rich with my 260k YEN.

Can I play this game like...forever? Or is there a deadline? So, when the calender ends, the whole game ends?

First: I wouldnt sweat time, the game is LOOONG and eventually you can troll the tower for nearly as long as you want. I havent had someone get tired while going through the tower in a long time, and I spend LOTS of time at once in the tower.

To get tired just study before bed a few times in a row

So, when the calender ends, the whole game ends?

you get a choice on 12/31. If you do one thing, the game ends and you get the "bad" ending. If you decide to go with it, you get an extra month to prepare for the final boss.

You dont need to sleep in class, I never do. Just use the bathroom once in a while, sleep early some nights, and take a few nights off of tart once in a while.

If you're feeling tired or sick, sleeping in class does wonders.

I got killed by death. My arrogance got me killed actually. I though I could beat him. Oh boy, I was SO wrong...

He's so scary. Everytime I hear his chains I get nervous. I will grind the shit out of my characters just to beat him.

I also want to analize those rara shadows, but they're so weak. One touch and they're dead. And when I wait, it runs away. Reminds me of those stupid silver kelolons in Lost Odyssey. Urgh  :-\

I just got Aigis. Wow, she's so annoying.

Aigis is FAR less annoying than Yukari. Yukari is whine whine whine, and if you dont agree with her whining its bitch bitch bitch.

I still say they should let you date a girl with apathy syndrome to freak out your friends. Lug her around town; it'd be like weekend at bernies.

Awesome game. And my persona compendium is still only at 26%. I need to make more persona creatures. Gotta catch 'em all.

By the way... With wich characters do you play the game, or have finished the game?

I always invite Yukari, Shinjiro and Aigis in my team. (I dropped Junpei) I think I'm going to use this team 'till the finish...

I studied like all week before exams. My Academics is only at the 2nd bar, but the grades I got were good or something. I haven't encountered Death yet. I've run into some stupid phantom ghosts or something that use the Domo spell or whatever its called that insta-kills you though, they suck.

I kinda rushed all the way up to the 36th floor but I just died on the boss there. It was my first try and I'm probably under-leveled since I basically ran past all the monsters I found just to get the warp points. I love this game. After I finish it I've got SMT: Nocturne to play and then it'll probably be time for Persona 4. I'd like to find Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 somewhere, though.

EDIT: I think one of the reasons I'm enjoying this game so much is because you only directly control the main character. Sure, you can change the tactics of your party members to go support or conserve SP or whatever, but you really don't have to. I always hated having to micromanage every single little detail in old RPG's. Being able to just press Triangle and have everything automate itself is really great too because it makes grinding quicker and easier.

Post by: MrAngryFace on July 12, 2008, 11:13:03 PM
Im in late Nov, and Alice + Seigfried are my bread n butter, with loki serving as my ice/wind and the ghost rider rip off guy is my fire blaster.

Seig made the 3 bosses from 180ish to 210 a cinch. Vorpal Blade + Great Status + Power Charge = OMG DMG OMG OMG. Alice has both Mudo Boost and Charm Boost making her Die for Me! and Charm spells deadly. I made Thanatos but he just doesn't really compare to Alice since he lacks the utility. Charm is fuckin cheesy and I NEED it. Seig offers me tons of DPS (unless slash resist of course) and all kinds of resist/counter/null slash/strike. Plus I get the Arms Master and 2H Sword bonus from him and I fused him into a sword to make Balmung, which has been a great sword for many hours.

I made trumpeter for those obnoxious fights against holy/dark using monsters, and I have Horus for healing and rezzing right now.

I still haven't encountered Siegfried or Alice in the fuse section...

I'm using Chernobog for Mudo skills
Loki for Bufu and Garu skills
Melchizedek for melee boost and vicious strikes skills
Odin for Hama and Zio skills
Kikuri-Hime for Media and Agi skills

And some other personas that I use for stats boost or for adding/removing an aliment.

I almost have 4million yen. I think I'm going to read a guide on how to get some personas. My compendium is only at 55% and I can create personas up 'till level 68. I'm doing something wrong...

The social links that I've mastered are Chariot, Hierophant, Hermit, Emperor, Death, Justice, Hanged Man, Devil and Magician.
I'm now busy maxing out the Moon, Tower, Strength and Sun sl's...

Lovers, Priestess, Fortune, Star and Temperamence are a bit low lol
Still have to encounter Judgement and Empress.

Alice is a 4 way, do the Liz fuse quests. Seig you eventualy encounter in a 3 way, but is a result of dating yuko to level 10, just do a seach on the web.

Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: MrAngryFace on July 13, 2008, 11:50:49 AM
Ja, trying to recall which one. Alice is a lower level persona compared to some of the other top tier fusions, but the boost from the death s.link and the skills she gets, and can pass on in fusions are top notch. I actually keep alice around cause its hard to get a die for me! mudo boost marin karin charm boost combo. Oh and if youre doing the Alice quests there's a specific way to give the pixie used to fuse her Megido. Its kind of a pain in the butt. Not only will it let you complete the quest, but its good to have an attack spell on Alice that isn't element based.

This:

Decarabia and Principality to create Nata Taishi

worked in Persona 3 vanilla, but no longer works. You have to take the result from the decarabia/princ fusion and use a few other fusions to get it into the Pixie of the fusion. Im sure there's instructions online, as that is how I figured it out. Most instructions are for the first version of persona 3 tho. I've done all the cross fusions, 2 of the pentagon, and the six way fusion. Some of the pentagon fusions are like 74+ level stuff.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: MrAngryFace on July 13, 2008, 03:00:20 PM
Seig:
Tempest Slash
Power Charge
Auto-Masuku
Evade Strike
High Counter
Vorpal Blade
Arms Master
2hSword Master

Alice:
Spirit Drain
Charm Boost
Megido
Marin Karin
Die for Me!
Marakunda
Repel Dark
Mudo Boost

My two best personas, easily. The higher level ones are nice, but I cant seem to get the same kind of awesome combination in their skill lists :(

You've got time for stuff. I hated December cause youre stuck in an old dungeon block, so best case you go in solo and grind money. January is when stuff opens up again, dungeon wise thank god.

Did you do the last liz date? She gives a blowjob and a persona!

There's two new six-point fusions opened up, but personas like susan-o require level 77 and up. I really wanna beat up the reaper, 5 million yen would be handy. Everyones equipment is already maxed but fusions cost :(
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Third on July 14, 2008, 11:26:45 AM
The quest where she comes to visit my room? No still haven't done it yet. There's no deadline. I'll save the blowjob for january.

My last save is on 30/12. I've heard that the choice you're going to make on 12/31 decides the good or bad ending. Def going for the good ending. Don't want to end the game for now.

The reaper quest is going to be hard. Shit. Going to lvl up like a madman in the last block.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize

"SPECIAL MOMENT"

Its a pretty easy choice. Do I wanna be awesome, or do I wanna suck? The game also gives you two chances to choose so you dont accidently make the wrong choice lol.

Reaper is a jerkface. It isnt really his hama mud spells so much as his high powered megido that wipes the whole party. I burned through two of the last 5 floor bosses on the 2nd of January, but things are starting to get tougher now. Lots of enemies with too many resistances. Vorpal Slash still does most of my work thankfully. Im going to burn through the 5 floor bosses then grind and fuse for the last half of the month.

And no, you probably can't kill the reaper yet. His high dmg megidolah or whatever spells damage is huge, and only high levels could survive it. All the other attacks I saw from him were easy to deal with.

Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize
Post by: Third on July 18, 2008, 12:40:00 PM
I already have about 6 million Yen. So I'm not really doing it for the money. It's for revenge. The bastard killed me twice.

I've read something about the fusion skill Armageddon and how it's very effective against the reaper. I need Helel and Satan first, so those are my next most wanted Personas. I don't know at what lvl Helel or Satan are, I'm still "only" at lvl 80.

My next objective: Obtaining Helel and Satan

I can also get Messiah, but I'm afraid his lvl is far too high.
Title: Re: Persona 3: FES - I apologize

Yeah money is soooo not an issue late game.

Really what it comes down to is killing him before he uses his megido super spell. Whats more annoying is he does mind charge on top of that and bam, over 1k dmg to everyone. I took a break once I cleared out the floor bosses. I know the rest of the time will be grindy OCD so I decided to take a few days and play a few other games. This weekend I will hunker down and try to finish it off.

I was also lvl 82 when I beat the last boss lol. Also got tired of grinding in the last block. Those stupid 10x experience shuffle cards just kinda vanished.

Maybe I'll start newgame+ when I'm cooled off.

I think I rather play a newgame+ than the answer.  :-\

Yeah the first fight in the answer told me how it was gonna be. Valley Girl Robuts and Tedious snore fights

Not only did the 10x experience cards appear less often, but when they did some insane shuffle with no system just threw them out of reach

When you get to the top most floor you unlock a secret room that has higher level enemies and bosses that will rape you. Best place to get to really high levels.

That way, when you're done grinding the last section of tartarus, you can move on to something more difficult.

iirc it's necessary to defeat the reaper to open the monad in fes

i dunno, i used the lucifer + satan combo in the original p3 to kill him with 1 hit. in fes you have to open monad to get the combo and to open monad you have to kill him. :spin

they changed the necessary personas for the combo. in fes you need helel and satan. i'm not really sure if opening monad is necessary to get helel, but it'll probably be a pain to grind for him without it.

you could use a persona with mediarahan too, as long as it has no weaknesses and everyone can survive the attack.
