Square Enix's grandiose plans for a Final Fantasy XIII three-way appear to be a bit stalled. The action oriented spin-off known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII may be coming even later than expected, which should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. According to an interview with Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura in the newest issue of Famitsu, he explains that development is the side story is currently "on hold," with development staff of that game now tasked with getting FFXIII out the door.
Given that it's been over two years since Square Enix first showed off its FFXIII offerings and we're still getting trailers devoid of gameplay, we certainly don't expect to see Final Fantasy XIII until well into 2009. We'll pencil in Versus for 2013 or so.
Let's give it up for ten-year console life cycles!

Why not make Versus for the 360, with the main FF being on the Ps3, and Kingdom hearts on the Wii? Heh, Square Enix is just not being smart.
They got caught with their pants down with the Ps3 "failure" and the Wii success, and since they were doing very small steps on the 360, they are now doing everything they can to change things in the nick of the time, with more focus on the Wii and 360, but still keep that golden chicken.
But it might be too late.

Know what pisses me off about FF?
There's no easy option. Here's a game with a mega budget, big ass story, but will give you these grinding fests that if you don't put through it, you will get stuck in some boss.
I hate it. I had to restart 8 and 10 because of that shit. FF XII man, that game was boring, 40 hours in and i was done with the game, talk about a grinding fest.
I just hope FFXIII is accessible. I want to play the game, and not have to grind, let it be more about skill for christ sakes.

I like how no matter how long FF games take, realistically they are only about as good as any of the top tier atlus RPGs, even with all their production values.

I imagine Square-Enix looked at the budget for FFvsXIII and realized that they have to depend on revenue of XIII to continue on and be financially stable. With FFXIII taking forever, it is either going to be an amazing masterpiece or a high budget failure. Versus should be a 360 title or at least a simultaneous release with PS3. The days of Sony domination are over. SE, along with other stubborn developers, need to wake up.

The game started to look more appealing and more details I started to hear like FFX battle director doing the battles in FFXIII are just totally appealing. I mean, the whole pic with the forests and dinosaurs and shit looks like Final Fantasy to me. So do some of the Versus shots with the moon and crap. The art direction screams Final Fantasy to me, something I've not experienced in 7 fucking years. I can't help but feel excited.

I was. It ended up not feeling like Final Fantasy at all. If you took away the moogles and stuff, it wouldn't be recognizably FF. Even FFVIII is recognizably FF. FFXII sucks ass. I blame Matsuno. So, what are the chances that FF13 will be retooled and released for Wii? Unlike something like MGS, it's not like FF is the brainchild of one person (anymore), so it's not like it's married to any one console. They haven't shown any real gameplay yet, and it's still far enough off that it could be completely different than the last time we saw it.

Chances are pretty good. It's looking like the project is in trouble, and they might have shifted everyone over to the ps2 engine to make a game for the Wii. Final Fantasy would be a perfect fit for the Wii.

the thing is they are only 2million or so PS3's in Japan right now, they coudl really do with this 77k a week sell through to get that up.

FF and MGS4 on the PC would be pretty cool, even if PC gamer just use them as benchmarking tools.

Didn't they say that they're not going to release DQ9 until they release all the remakes for DS first? Considering that V hasn't been released yet, we've got a decent wait, probably a year from now I'd guess.

FFXIII is one of the 2 games I bought my PS3 for, hope it comes out soon. Looking forward to seeing what S-E is doing with Wii, though. I especially look forward to DQ10 Wii...

That doesn't even make sense. I mean, they pulled people off of the project in order to complete XIII. Who exactly would work on Versus? If they had a team left to work on Versus I don't think releasing it on 360 would really have an impact on their work load.
This cancellation likely has little to do with PS3 itself. Putting it on 360 wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, of course, but the game would still need to be made.
I'm not even slightly surprised that the game was put on hold, though.

Actually he doesn't say Versus is completely on hold. He says there are still programmers, designers and concept artists working on the game's foundation, while most of the in-game graphics staff concentrates on XIII. He also says something about FF13's development I don't really understand:

Yeah, I haven't read anything about Versus getting canceled. SE is moving everyone on the design team over to FFXIII so they can get the damn game out. And when FFXIII is done, they'll go back to Versus.

Square Enix is fast to slam the book down on the recent reports about Final Fantasy Versus XIII being put on the back burner. The company has gone out with a statement on the hot topic: "Reports that development for Final Fantasy Versus XIII is on hold are false. The truth of the situation is that when free, some staff from the Versus team have been helping with the XIII team on development of Final Fantasy XIII. Development for both titles is continuing as originally scheduled."
