Title: I'm moving! ... but to where?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on June 21, 2008, 03:34:45 AM
The Lord has rained down a heap of shit on me and has shown me who my true friends are.  And I think it's time to pack up and head... where?

Los Angeles?

Seattle?

D.C. Metro Area?

Texas?

Florida?

It's too tragic to regurgitate.  But obviously moving here was my biggest mistake.  It has made me stronger, for having to endure a lot with so little to show for it.

Let's pick my destiny!

Not for another 40 years, buddy.

I'm mostly sorry that things suck, but a part of me is imagining you as Woody Allen in Annie Hall.  Conclusion:  get the hell out of LA.

I am leaning towards returning home to Maryland for a brief sabbatical, where my real friends and family are or meeting up with some film school grads and friends who are returning to Los Angeles for another stab at Hollywood.  If I go back to Maryland, it'd pretty much be a temporary springboard for any real, long-term move.  It'd give me more flexibility to jump on a plane to Los Angeles at a moment's notice, versus being bogged down with leases and whatnot if I were to relocate to say, Seattle or Austin.

But Seattle sounds nice.  Housing and everything is cheaper in Texas according to FlameOfCallandor.  And Miami looks swell, because Dexter is there!

You should move from being EB store manager to doing executive account management.

YEARS ago I was a DM for Specs music and fucking movie gallery - those experiences positioned me to move into executive account management where the base pay was 90K and I got 1% of the gross margin from all of the accounts I managed (which brought me up to like 120K/year).

Its the proper kind of pay-off job step that anyone deserves after slaving away in a retail chain for years.

I imagine EB has been working you hard - take a payoff and make the next step!

come to Maryland. You could be a translator or something here.

I'll be staying in this country for quite some time, if not permanently.  If I don't have a job by the end of next month, it's off to the in-laws' house until I find something.

No, lyte - if anything, I will try to transfer my job at GameStop.

Good to know it wasn't that.   :)

It's affordable if you rent in an outer borough or LI/NJ... with roommates. But renting in Manhattan is super duper expensive.

How often do you move?

I lived in Hollywood for 2.5 years.  I probably should've stayed put in retrospect.  I've had a good run of bad luck up here for about a year and a half, and nothing to really show for it.

I'm sure as hell not moving to Michigan!  Lame!

NC is actually one of my choices for when I graduate.  I've never been there, but it somehow made my list that also includes Texas, Phoenix, San Diego, and certain parts of Florida.

With my luck, I'll probably end up in Wisconsin.  At that point, i'd rather just be in Michigan.

Sounds like NC would be too cold for your tastes.  We actually have all four seasons here, it gets pretty damn cold in the winter at times.

Out here on the coast the "winter" isn't too bad, imo.  It hasn't snowed in Wilmington in like 20 years apparently.  As someone who used to live in the more mountainous part of the state (Asheville) I do know that it does snow heavily in some places, but don't forget the coast!

That's true, I mean it hasn't snowed in Charlotte in a couple of years.  It's definitely no Michigan or even West Virginia when it comes to Winter, I was just judging by the other places he listed.  NC is much colder than any of those other climates (I think San Diego gets chilly but not like NC I'd wager.)

I really can't recommend NC highly enough. It's diverse, sports a great mix of rural, suburban, and urban areas, is relatively cheap to live in, and has lots of activities.

Dunno about the movie business here. The Triangle area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, where I live) is getting pretty decent for game development.

If I move to the D.C. metropolitan area - it'd be the Maryland side.

Yay. Then we can hang out and I can use you to pick up girls, by telling them you're a crazy man, and I take care of you while I'm not helping the orphans or the sick dogs.

You gotta reciprocate.  Half the time Willco will be the hobo you've taken under your wing, and the other half you'll be the at-risk youth whose future he's saving via the Big Brother program.

I just caught wind that a relatively new store just miles away from both my parents' house, my sibilings, Montgomery College, etc. might be opening up.  Haven't heard anything on North Carolina, yet.

I'm sure there's a gazillion stores in NC you could probably go to.  Hell, there's like 7 or 8 GS just in the Wilmington area alone, and we're a small city of about 100,000 people.  Also, from my past history and casual shopping trips some of them are run pretty poorly!

I want a Store Manager opening, though.  I don't want to sit as an ASM 'till one opens up.

That's understandable, but at the same time beggars can't really be choosers ya know?  Also in my experience if someone is talented room will be made.  There's always someone out there underachieving, you know?  Thank god I don't have anyone wanting my bullshit "job", that's all I'm saying!

All managers' bonus scorecards are heavily weighed by rentention, so no manager - district or store level - is going to fire an employee for anything less than inventory problems or loss prevention.  So it's not THAT easy.  There might be an opening, but I don't know.  Nothing, yet.

Maryland does look promising, though.  Unfortunately, the DM is out and all information is from the district's acting DM.  The DM may have very well found a replacement.

That kind of sucks because you can have an employee who just sucks, but doesn't break any rules. And you have to keep them because of retention. Weak. :(

East coast rocks!

I think there is a GameStop opening up on MILF Island, to service the MILF needs for Wii Fit and other Wii accessories!
