lol rap
Anybody see those Soulja Boy in Japan videos, where he gets copies of Valkyria Chronicles and Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan? He gets points for being a SEGA fan.
even though soulja boy has the intelligence of a brick, ice t looks like the idiot in this case. grown man is dissing a 17 year old kid? come the fuck on. all soulja boy did was make a fucking song on his computer and threw together some lyrics with a bunch of catch phrases and pop culture references and he got rich. soulja boy's fanbase is girls from the ages of 12-14.
ice t just looks weak for dissing this kid.
Soulja Boy is a 17 year old kid who built his own hype online, made the biggest song of 2007, then went platinum off that one hit. He's making money, who cares. I don't even consider him to be "hip hop" which makes Ice T's claim rather problematic. Honestly, T just embarrassed himself there. Telling a 17 year old kid to eat a dick? That he ruined hip hop? SMH. Soulja Boy didn't ruin shit. What's ruining hip hop is the labels who put a priority on signing ring tone rappers who'll make them quick bucks, then be replaced by the next big one hit wonder.
Soulja Boy was smart enough to make money off his "music" before he signed with Interscope - most of these jokers don't do that - but even that isn't going to save him from being dropped once it's obvious the well is dry. So when the label gives them a $500,000 advance what do they do? Take it out in cash, flaunt it in videos, buy expensive cars, take care of their crew, etc. They still don't realize an advance isn't like being payed by your employer: it has to be paid back eventually. So you sell millions off your ring tone, most of that goes to the label. Your album bombs (hip hop sales are taking a beating now). Your tour sales begin to wane. And you're stuck for the next year trying to come up with another hit to pay off your debt. And when you barely do you're dropped from the label.
Ice-T responds (bonus at the end):

While Soulja Boy and Ice-T jab back and forth after T claimed Soulja single-handedly kiled hip-hop, Kanye West has come to the defense of the young rapper on his blog.
"Soulja boy is fresh ass hell and is actually the true meaning of what hip hop is sposed to be. He came from the hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song. He had all of America rapping this summer. If that ain’t Hip Hop then what is? A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain’t even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it’s 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Ni*gas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning… that’s Nas level sh*t… he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas sh*t if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track “Silent Murder” on it. In closing… new distinguished black fellows get ya money$$$$$$$$$$ Keep this sh*t fresh and original…. ain’t no fu*kin’ rules to this sh*t and that’s what real hip hop is to me."

Edit: http://rapcoalition.org/Rappers%20Don't%20Make%20Loot.htm
(kinda dated but still relevant info; these guys aren't living large at all lol)
Rap is different from other genres in terms of how artists make money. Rock bands usually tour through the summer and do festivals (Ozzfest, Lolipalooza, etc) for instance; they stay on the road and make monies. Touring is how they make a good deal of their money, while the label basically gets $9-10 off every record sold. Add on royalties and popular bands will make good money right?
But with rappers touring often isn't a priority because of low sales/interest. You rarely hear about rappers selling out huge tour spots, or about big rap festivals (Rock the Bells is an exception for instance). It's like they get their advance money and figure fuck it, I'm rich bitch. NOPE. The label owns you because they own your music, and a lot of these guys still don't understand that. 50 Cent may suck as an artist but he knows how the system works and commands money. That might be changing now that his music isn't selling great anymore

Hip-hop started off as Jamaican DJ's way to pump up a crowd i.e. party music anyway. Hip Hop isn't dead it's just that new rappers have become more one dimensional and I guess pop chart orientated. Old rappers like Ice-T, Nas, Jay-Z, KRS-One et al. should stay at home become business men or retire ore become pillars of the black community or whatever and leave rapping to new rappers to 'fuck' up.
'More'
Don't kid yourself. If you sign a record deal, your goal is to get to the top of the charts. The whole image of "keeping it real" and "being from the streets" in rap and the "down to earth, no make-up bullshit" in rock around the early 90s "grunge/gangsta" era that changed everything was pure fucking marketing GENIUS.This is never going to get solved but you don't have to go 'pop' to sell well ala Marshall Mathers LP.

Let me define what I think going 'pop' means: RnB collabs, sappy gangsta love themes and club anthems.
shaq disses kobe. says he ruined his marriage. That's awesome, if only because his ass tastes like ass from sitting on the couch the past month or so... :lol

Today "gangsta" rap goes in the opposite direction and instead relies on the most incendiary lyrics and boasts in order to impress suburban 14 year old white kids. I rarely hear any sincere introspection, fear, or anger today.
I find conscious backpackers more annoying, 'Oh my god Immortal Technique\Talib Kweli\Common\Nas'. Fuck if you want to save the world and correct it's wrongs you're not going to do it listening to a record.
Disposable club shit would be fine if they didn't play it all the time.
