Because all true gentlemen know that math battles are where it's at. Paint any coat over top of 'em, I'll eat 'em up.
ToS is really just a button mashin' "action" rpg, tho. Replete with some of the worst, most cliched characters EVAR. Note- I still kind of enjoyed it and interestingly enough am playing my 2nd playthrough now so I can fight some of the extra bosses. :(
Fire Emblem is the best, tho. Usually doesn't have a lame story and if it does it doesn't hurt you to skip it and just revel in the strategery and math.

Little-known fact - I'm in the credits of this game :D
Patel should be too, for his sins!
-
Never go to JAPAFAG RPGs in the first place! Like me! I'm scared shitless of these games every time I catch footage of it. So fucking weird.
Congrats on your wedding. Is he a console or a PC gamer?

:lol :lol
Well played sir
-
Does your fiancee like RPGs too, Borys?
My g/f doesn't play games at all. Like, not even oldskool NES games. :-\
-
My ex-gf got way into mmorpgs of all things after I broke up with her. Poor girl.
-
I play videogames to have fun, thats probably it. Once a person figures out that playing Baldur's Gate isn't any 'cooler' just cause its a western rpg, they shrug off the chains of expectation and rejoice as they embrace MAGNA CARTA for ps2.
haha just kidding, but seriously.
-
I think it's because J-rpgs tend to have better character development and story presentation than western RPGs. In many WRPGS, you kinda have to depend on your own imagination for those elements.
The older I get, the harder I can tolerate JRPGS' little quirks. I'm still stuck on Lost Odyssey's last 20% because I'm just sick of random encounters every 5 secs.

My ex girlfriend got into Xenosaga and Kingdom hearts after I broke up with her... and eventually became a lesbian. Beat that! :P

I've found hardcore JRPG fans to be much more agressively snobbish about JRPGS being superior than the other way around.

Guilty as charged...

Smooth: Thats only because its easier to find JRPG fans. What do you care, you don't even want gameplay just GPFHXXXXXXXXXXXX!

There's a hidden homosexual in all of us. I too love jrpg's. I don't show it to my friends though.

Why would you be ashamed to show your hobbies to your friends? Shouldn't your friends not care what you choose to do in your free time, provided it's within reason and not something like jerking off to cheeseburger porn or something.
-
I think the last JRPG I played was Lunar Story 2: Lunar something or other on PS1 it was the cliched story that finally broke me. Anyway I have good memories of Chrono Cross as one of the last rpgs I played since it involved no grinding :bow2 but had all the other shitty JRPG elements.

I disagree with the first bit but I agree with the second.

Bah.

VP2 and Skies of Arcadia forever

My friends like the typical EA Sport games and other shooters.
I was once playing FFX, a few friends came for a visit. There was no save point nearby otherwise I'd save the game and quit. So I did continue. They questioned me about the game. And then a cutscene started with a lot of drama in it. My friends laughed at me. They asked me why I play this crap. (pretty ironic considering they like NBA/Fifa Street)
I just don't like playing jrpg's when other people are around.

Since about 2002 or so I've tried to play through about five or so of the stat-heavy "niche" console strategy/party-based RPGs from Japan and just cannot do it. I should like them, but I think it's a combination of A) gaming on consoles feels weird to me now since I've been playing games on my PC almost exclusively for years now and B) a lot of the time I have to sit through a bunch of linear, no-option dialogue and other non-interactive elements for a significant portion of time, which drives me nuts.
I'd rather play a game sort of like X-COM (or its more recent derviatives after modding), ToEE or Jagged Alliance 2 than the strategy RPGs-more strategy, more "meat" to the game, and if I want an story RPG I always go back to the D&D games since they offer larger party customization and dialogue choices to keep me involved in how the story develops. As a bonus, it means less ridiculously over the top JRPG story wankery, and more Western style pulp fantasy fiction-a choice that definitely meets my tastes more.
Not that I play a RPG more than once per quarter or so at best. I pretty much spend all my time with strategy games and their allies these days.

VP2 and SoA, at the very least play those at some point

I played SOA back on the Dreamcast, no need to revisit that.
I always wished a decent CRPG team could dredge up the rights to the old Spelljammer license and create ship battles as part of the game mechanic (but in a way with more detail and nuance than SOA's system).
As for VP2, I rented it and got assaulted by some monstrous cutscene at the start of the game. No thanks!
-
Its not that long a cutscene! JEEZE
youre seriously missing out
-
and you're not even playing the right japafag rpg's
-
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is not a jrpg.
and it's pretty good.
-

youre seriously missing out
by what standards? Metal Gear Solid 4? (speaking of which, I saw an in-store kiosk 10 minute or so video for the game and it looked as awful as I had envisioned). I remember that cutscene going and going, though I can say it wasn't as bad as that VP1 intro.

oh, I'm beating it, alright
-
because they're better than the common FPS and RTS

And it's the only genre they play;etc.
-
The battle systems, leveling, and great soundtracks. An interesting story is a plus.
-
Frag: you are SOOO missing out. VP2 is like, my favorite PS2 game
-
They're fun. I dunno. They make my dick hard. Favorite genre.
-
I wish they all had battle systems as fun as Grandia 3.
-

Hate to disappoint you, but she was Polish and blonde, not Asian!!! :-*
-
Um...they're fun. I love JRPGs but my backlog of JRPGs is huge, tho. Too many games too little time yada yada yada.

VP1 is awesome frag, long winded intro be damned!
-
i'm downloading Baldur's Gate 2 from Gametap to see if now, 10 years later, i can find the magic that so many others saw from the start
i'm guessing "no"
in which case it's off to Grandia 2!
-
I wish they all had battle systems as fun as Grandia 3.
Grandia 3 is fun in boss battles, but most of the time it's so easy you're just wasting your time with the more complex stuff. I got about 2/3rds through it and quit due to the endless string of meaningless random encounters. There are only so many hours of hitting A I can take these days, even if lots of exciting stuff happens on screen when i hit it....
-
I dunno, but I just returned home with FFVI Advance and I'm working on TWEWY, DDS2, and PErsona 3 FES (probably won't finish FES though...shit is too long and too repetitive, though it's also very good, which is a shame.)
-
I think the math battle is part of it, but there's also a part of me that sometimes wants to have my hand held rather than be thrown into a world where I don't know what I want to do.
I can't play J-ARPGS though. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I prefer turn based RPGs. And even then only if they have interesting battle systems.
Nothing will ever beat Grandia 2 for battle systems.
-
I don't remember having any serious problems at the beginning of disc 2. My magic game was sick. 8)
Grandia 3 should've had a new game plus type of thing. I'd play it again if I could choose a higher difficulty.
Nothing will ever beat Grandia 2 for battle systems.
Grandia 3 already did. ???
-
i never got to play 3 :(
-
I want to get into rpgs, but outside of those SMT games, I just cant get into those happy disney land j-rpgs.. I love w-jpgs simply because they are darker. I don't mean 'more matoor' but damn, I don't feel like an idiot playing them.
-
i never got to play 3 :(
If I was well off like Drinky/MAF, I'd buy you a copy. :(
-
grandia got topped a long time ago with VP2, SMT3:N, DDS1+2, Persona 3, BOFV battle systems.
-
Quiet Himuro. I don't even remember you saying that you played Grandia 2 or 3.

I've played Grandia 1 and 2, but not 3.
-
grandia 1 > grandia 2
as far as i've heard, that series has gotten worse and worse as time goes by. haven't played x-treme or 3 but x-treme sounds appealing since it's a dungeon crawler, a unique at that.
-
grandia 1 > grandia 2
Not it's battle system.

You sir are correct.

"Us"? Speak for yourself!
I for one am totally over both Square's and Namco's characters and therefore am over their japafag RPGs.
Lost Odyssey's characters on the other hand... :heart

Xtreme is fun as long as you don't claw your own eyes out from the annoying VA and terrible characters. But gameplay wise it's by far the best Grandia.

BoF: DQ > VP2. Just barely, but it's truuuuueee.
