Title: Operation Darkness rocks!
Post by: Mondain on June 28, 2008, 09:11:06 PM
It's part of the very best games I've played this year, right there with No More Heroes, Hot Shots Golf OOB, Lost Odyssey, Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4. If you like SRPGs you simply HAVE to check it out!

Reviews in the vein of 2/3/4 out of 10 are pure insanity.

If you're a strategist, this is for you. And the camera isn't as bad as it appears, you get used to it pretty quickly, even if on occasion the zooms are pretty bad. Eventually you end up really liking its dynamic style. The one thing that is a bit more nagging is that there are an absolutely huge amount of hexes on every map, and scrolling over them to pick the spot that you want takes ages. However as nearly all weapons are guns, maps need to be so huge.

Even at that, also even with the bad visuals (Xbox in HD but who cares?), the game is pure, pure fun. World War II with guns and werewolves simply cannot be a bad combination. Having a SRPG relying so heavily (almost exclusively in fact) on guns and rocket launchers instead of melee weapons and spells is actually quite refreshing. You aren't aiming for a single spot anymore if you don't use a sniping gun; most of the time you have some sort of machine gun and when you aim you target a few hexes, and thus you can kill a bunch of nazis in one shot.

Also, taking out tanks with rocket launchers never gets old. Blasting away dozens of undead nazi soldiers that arise out of the blue is always exciting too!

As far as the story goes, it reminds me a lot of Front Mission, albeit with more cheese, less character development and no locales to visit. Oddly enough, this isn't even a bad combo! Most of the music is also some weird form of techno, and it helps you not to take this game seriously.

Sure, if one of the main characters dies the game is over, but you don't play Fire Emblem with significant characters who've died, do you? On top of that you can load them with a bunch of healing packs so that they don't die when shot.

In my last fight I thought I'd won the map, there was this big tank with like 200 HPs left, I just needed ONE tiny little missile shot and it was done... and then the tank played and it ran over the main character, killing him and ending the game, as you can't use an healing pack in that case. :lol

I already can't wait to get back to it. Operation Darkness kicks ass, try it out for yourself and spread the word!

Mondain trolls the Wii, then praises shitty, Wii-looking games for the 360. Just another day at Evilbore. :dur

30$? Come on, if crappy 6 hours-long 3rd person shooters are worth 60$, then a novel strategy RPG like that is worth at least as much.

I love this game so much, I was just about to buy it.

And then I pre-ordered the PS3 Initial D game instead.

Mondain doesn't think Uncharted is worth $60?  Guess he's not a Sony fanboy after all.

Novel strategy RPGs that came out of my PlayStation 2, yeah

I don't hate the game, Mondain, but $60 is still steep

no Uncharted isn't worth 60$, the duck-and-cover and the shooting gets repetitive after a while but the game looks great, really feels like an adventure, has splendid environments... however it's all over in 7 hours... rental at best unless you're an obsessive gamer who wants to complete all the different difficulty modes and unlock all the extras... I'd say about 8.5/10

what are quality PS2 SRPGs apart from crappy anime ones

I don't think Atlus is to be blamed for the game's price, it probably has to do with the licensing fees they have to pay, combined with the fact that very few copies will be printed... a release is better than no release at all

Wait the fuck? You decided to not get OD for a PS3 game instead? :rofl

I could not stand more than 30 minutes in the demo. Dear god the camera sucks monkey balls, what a distinguished mentally-challenged stupid camera it is. I never, ever experienced a 'sucky camera' in a tactical game before, so when people kept bashing it I was like "it's not gonna be that bad after all", and then I tried it. Geez. Why.... ???

I had the option to get the game for free (review copy) and I passed. I'm digging the art style but everything else fails in my book. Wish I can love it though, I'm kinda interested in the plot.

I just dont get why they think the first think I wanna look at on the tactical map is the characters nostrils

hay, I paid 60 dollars. Save your pansy talk for the people who hold out for 10 dollar bargin bin copies. The camera is crap, quit being a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow

Apparently $60 is too much for even Mondain, since he opted to buy a fully fleshed weeaboo race car game

the camera is very confusing at times and many viewing angles are pretty bad, but usually you just have to hold the analog joystick up to get a bird's eye view

and it's just cool when the character is doing an attack and the camera zooms onto him and he proceeds to shoot the nazi, it's much better than watching 20 characters standing idly on a field and then seeing two of them doing some dull little combat animation

i may be a pansy, but i will be a pansy with an extra $50 in my pocket instead of just a wadded-up receipt with $60 worth of regret printed on it
