Title: My Metal Gear Solid 4 Experience Is...
Post by: bork on June 30, 2008, 11:47:07 AM
...That I haven't really played it yet.

I decided to go back and play through the previous games first. I never finished MGS3 and I barely touched MGS2. Two weeks ago, I went back to MGS3 Subsistence. Started with six hours logged in, and finished it in about 14. It was a fantastic game, and for a Metal Gear title, the story was more grounded in "reality." I much prefer it to any of the later nanomachine-filled sci-fi bullshit. The ending also destroys MGS4's, which is really not hard to do. (I don't like constant retconning.) Also been playing Portable Ops. It's frustrating, because there are times when I want to sneak up on someone and grab them, but the character punches instead. The game definitely has some frustrating controls and it has made for some hair-pulling experiences. I generally give a mission one or two chances and then shut the game off for the day. Don't think I have much left to play through in it though.

Yesterday I started playing MGS2 Substance. Two things- I already miss Big Boss and I miss the more modern control and camera schemes much, much more. Raiden still sucks. His voice sounds even worse than I remember it. But I'm going to plod on finish the game. After that, I'm still not sure if I'm going to play MGS4. I may be doing this out of chronological order, but I think I might play through The Twin Snakes first. I never did finish that one either.

Yeah, MGS3 is really something special. Awesome gameplay, amazing bosses, great pacing, excellent characters and character development. I really ended up liking many of the major characters a lot: Volgin, Big Boss/Naked Snake and The Boss being my favorites. My only complaint is the tedious menu management (camo, food, cure etc)

I'm not really much of a MGS fan but 3 really won me over. Too bad Kojima went back to the ridiculous convulted preachy long-winded bullshit in 4.

MGS3 is so cheesy, it looks and sounds like a corny James Bond film, although I enjoyed the political background a lot

MGS:PO is garbage even for MGS fans.  It's the only MGS that I haven't beaten.

The PSP's lack of buttons makes it impossible to duplicate modern MGS gameplay.  Konami should have simplified the gameplay/controls for the PSP.

play the AC!D games. Best in the series.

Something like Acid probably works much better for the PSP than Portable Ops.  How's the 2nd game?  1st one seemed pretty good but it required too much effort to learn the rules.

its true, Metal Gear Ac!d 2 is fukyn wykd, having heaps of fun with it, must be about 2/3rds the way through it now.

My avatar is from that game so it must be sweet. Its not really that hard, you just have to play for a bit and figure everything out

They made to mistake of choosing to change the classic controls and style of gameplay to what Subsistance did.  It was a bad choice.  I still think Ghost Babel is the best portable Metal Gear.
