Rumors abound that Robert Carlyle is to take over the title role in “Doctor Who” on Saturday night’s BBC installment -- the last regular "Who" episode until 2010.
Not that I don't like the guy.......but, really? Please no.

No way. The Doctor Who people are generally terrible about keeping secrets. Mind you, not much leaked out about the finale, but do you really think they'd doa regeneration right now? Four specials spread throughout the year would not be a good way to introduce the new guy. Also, I suppose it doesn't mean much, but David Tennant is confirmed to be in the Christmas special.
Also, extensive nerdy photo analysis at the Doctor Who Forums has shown pretty well that when the Dalek shot The Doctor, he didn't glow all over his body like the other people shot have. It's a FLESH WOUND and they will use either the severed hand or the sonic screwdriver to fix it.

About Doctor Who. When the hell is the new season DVD going to come out? I usually wait and watch it all at once.

I'd imagine it will be out in the fall or out for Christmas. As of tomorrow, the full series will have aired and you can safely download them.

As expected, through the magic of RTD bullshit, no Eleventh Doctor. Aintitcool = shit.
-
Thanks for the spoilers :(
I googled this and the Carlyle rumors go way beyond just AICN, and date as far back as February.
-
Also, Captain Jack follows Luke Smith into a public toilet and punctures his brown rose.
-
oh god, dylan moran as the doctor would be sexploitacularly sextacular
-
If Dylan Moran was the Doctor, I'd actually watch it!
-
Is Moran really the right person to play a character so wonderfully quirky, charming, and upbeat?
Or are you just assuming that under his reins the character would become Bernard Pt 2 -- less charming and more bitter, sarcastic and whiny?
-
Dylan Moran as the Doctor and Jeff from Coupling as his companion. They can sit in the TARDIS and drink wine for an hour a week.
-
i like him beyond the hot messes he usually plays
i think he's charming and funny but with a hint of elan which I don't normally associate w/ Dr Who.

The first season of Black Books is the only one I frequently watch. After Graham Linehan left it was just not as absurd and hilarious. Thank god I started watching Father Ted, because that totally has whatever was missing from season 2 of Black Books in spades. I'd prolly rank Father Ted right aside Blackadder in best british comedies evar. Argh I keep neglecting the fact that Father Ted isn't british.
Maybe we can get Father Jack involved in this, too.

Finished the Doctor Who finale. Should I put thoughts here or do you want to start a thread TVC? I think anyone concerned with it is already here, but you've earned the right of first refusal 8)
-
Feel free. I won't be watching until tonight. I try to do genre TV at night, heh.
-
Ehhhh, I'll save it for when more people have actually seen the end and you can do a separate thread if you like. I couldn't really bear waiting to watch it.....though in retrospect I probably could have ;)
-
How would you rank it in terms of last years terrible finale? More or less terrible? Is there any more Doctor Who MAGIC?
-
It's better than last years. There is still Doctor magic but I think it's more in line with doctor who than think happy thoughts. I liked the resolution a lot. Also we learn the doctors name but it's really predictable.

WHAT! What are the circumstances under which he reveals his name?
-
The dalek guy tries to hurt the doctor with it. In a last ditch effort he resorts to name calling.
though the doctors reaction is weird so it might not be it.
-
Dalek Caan? The crazy prophet one?
-
Mickey and Jackie! I love Mickey. He is kinda cute, too.
The dude playing Davros is great, too.
Sarah Jane Smith and Davros talking is awesome fan service. They don't even explain who Davros is for the most part, so it's kind of fan service that he's there at all. Actually, this finale in general is basically pure fan service. They just wanted to get every recurring character back. Is there, say, any real reason that Rose's mom is there? It's not like she turned into a badass or worked for Torchwood or anything. She's just there because fans (rightfully) love her.

Final impressions:
1 > 2 = 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3
The finales of the last two seasons feature a whole lot of Doctor Magic and meaningless technobabble. Overall, though, I would list this finale as a good set of episodes, which is not a favor I'd pay to the third season. I may rally against fanservice elsewhere, but I dug it in a cheesy way, right down to the ending here. It was really nice, and I think it was decently well done. The second season's finale is also flawed, but not fatally so, so I rank them together. The finale of the first season was at least interesting, even if there was some Doctor Magic involved.
I think this was a decent set of sendoff eps for RTD. He did what he does, he did it well, and he included a lot of things that will keep fans happy or bitching and talking.
