Title: Ugh. Apartment hunting.
Post by: GilloD on July 05, 2008, 11:36:23 AM
Apartment hunting in New York is stressful. You have to act fast, keep your eyes open and try not to get ripped off. You have to balance insane rents with unsafe neighborhoods. This is compounded by the fact that the only real way we could afford to live someplace where we wouldn't be killed was to take on 5 roommates and find a 4 bedroom. Actually, that was my wife's idea. So try finding an affordable 4 bd in a reasonable neighborhood. Tack on slimy brokers, weirdo landlords and you've got a recipe for MENTAL BREAKDOWN.

It is a pain in the ass.

I once was going to rent a sublet apartment until I found out the owner mentioned that he wanted to keep his 3 pit bulls locked in a bedroom.  He advertised the apartment as a studio when it was actually a one-bedroom apartment.  He told me that we would come in at 5am in the morning to walk and feed his dogs.  Again, he never mentioned this until I toured the apartment.  So shady.  Good luck to you.  Finding a broker is your best bet.

Why don't you try a studio in Astoria?  It is a safe neighborhood.  Studios go for about one thousand a month there.  Is that in your budget?

Gunning for around 1000/br. Also, I hate Astoria. It's all chains, I'd just as soon live in Jersey.

You mean the strip, right?  There are some great Greek grocery stores.

How about Washington Heights/Inwood?  It's up there, but affordable.

The Middle Eastern section is like my favorite NYC ethnic neighborhood. I've been poking around Inwood, I saw some nice stuff around Bedford in W.Burg.

Yeah my wife and I are looking for a place in Brooklyn.  We're hoping to moved by late August, early Sept. at worst.

I've been livin in the same place for over 3 years now, and while I would like a newer apartment, the location and view of this place is REALLY nice; even if the building is old.

If my wife hadn't decided that we should have 4 other roomies this would be so much easier.
