I was at the supermarket a few days back, in the checkout line, looking at all the wonderful things available to purchase. I was buying Aleve Liquid Gels because nowadays I eat those things like they are M&Ms and the liquid inside them reminds me of chemical Jolly Ranchers. I know the flavor of the insides due to my habit of frequently regurgitating. The chemical taste tapestry is also the sort that you can't get out of your throat, itches, and stays there for like a half hour.
Anyway, there were tabloids there. I don't recall which one it was, but one of them had a cover story about how Estelle Getty can no longer remember Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, or Betty White. As a homosexual, this story was kind of important to me, but I really have too much dignity to look at, much less purchase, a trashy tabloid aimed at bored housewives. So that is where the title question comes in: would it have been acceptable to shoplift said item? It's a tabloid magazine, likely to be destroyed or whatever at the end of the week anyway, and any profit from the sale of the publication would have been tiny, since they cost like 2 bucks. Stealing the magazine, by some measures, would be ethical, since it would be the active denial of the service of the companies that pay paparazzis and put shirtless Mario Lopez on the cover of everything. Indeed, I think it might not have just been acceptable to steal the magazine, but when all factors are measured, it would have been the right thing to do.
I am sure wiser individuals than myself have wrestled with this quandary, but I think I make a good point. Also, did anyone happen to get that magazine? What's the story? How bad is Sophia?

Which tabloid was it? I want to read this story and I'm not gay. :'(
-
shoplifting is only unacceptable if you're a fucking wuss who thinks that you're actually hurting the business in any significant way. doubly so because you shouldn't give a fuck what happens to the business or it's employees. steal away, and feel good knowing you saved some cash!
-
Steal as much as possible. Every store (retail and grocery) has rampant theft. Just be smart enough to know if you're in an area with a security camera or not.
-
WHEN ITS FOR SURVIVAL
Or you just want to stuff a melon in your pants
-
As demi has pointed out, its all relative.
Never acceptable, sometimes understandable.

Im sure it was viewed as me being a pain in the ass.
-
when you want something and don't have the money.
-
is pirating stuff off the internet similar to shoplifting
-
I would say never. It's not worth the embarrassment of getting caught. Tabloids are disgusting, though, and I can understand your reluctance for providing any money to those culturally bankrupt publications.
-
When you're poor and you really just have to get those shoes. :-*
-
It's acceptable anytime that you aren't caught

Since the store already bought the magazine from the tabloid publisher, the tabloid publisher wouldn't lose any money, the store would. Thus stealing the magazine wouldn't prevent any more shirtless Mario Lopez photos; the consequentialist argument is no good. The only argument you have left is that the theft is negligible. Well that certainly doesn't make it right. Anyway, small thefts carried out by millions of people who use the same logic add up to billions of dollars of property theft. The costs are not absorbed by big corporations, but passed on to consumers.

Wow, I didn't know demi and TVC are gay.
Anyway, no stealing isn't right, what you're doing is just rationalizing it. It'd only be ethical if you stole food because your life depended on it.
-
I'm proud of the fact that I've never stolen anything in my life, unless we count the Jet magazines I borrowed from my grandma for masturbatory means.
stealing is wrong. i guess if you were poor and stole some food that would be ok. but since I'm not a homosexual i don't know whether your scenario was truly a life or death matter.
-
demi isn't gay.
-
People like TVC are why the Weekly World News went out of business.
Also, the Golden Girls story sounds made up. I bet they picked Estelle Getty because she played older than the rest of them, even though she isn't.
-
Stealing is gay.
-
When it's from a huge chain it should be encouraged.
I can't imagine the huge punishments that we can inflict upon an individual for useless materialistic shit that doesn't matter.
-
shut up mondain
-
mondain is such a rebel
-
I stole food to eat during my break when I worked at a supermarket. Almost everyone working there hated it and tried to take whatever they could. I didn't go that far.

no

I don't know if it's as bad as they say, but she does have dementia.

Wow, I didn't know demi and TVC are gay.
TVC is gay; Demi isn't gay (unless it's for Nick Frost).

So you're on my side then, right?

Actually, I subscribed to the weekly world news for like 5 years. The reason I stopped was because the burden of it being released weekly was just too much. I could have papered my house with that much shit.
And demi is indeed gay.

GAY FOR SURVIVAL
-
Honestly, one person stealing a tabloid is not going to be a huge deal.
The ones that cause the most amount of damage, in my anecdotal experience anyway, have been the liquor thieves and the meat thieves. They just run off into the bathroom, put the liquor or their meat in their purses (a lot of thieves are female) and then walk out of the store. This does not count the inside jobs like the 16 year old checkers trying to rip off a bottle of BV, which happens quite a bit. Of course more than just the bottom workers stole. The store manager at the place I worked at was one of the worst. Working at the Meat Department, he would get Beef Tenderloin and Ribeyes for $1.99 a pound, which is practically stealing (Beef Tenderloin runs about $20-25 a pound).
Stealing is fine until you get caught. Getting caught stealing a tabloid magazine is probably more embarrassing than your parents walking in and discovering you mid jerk while a porn is playing.
-
When you are broke, starving, and need to steal just to survive. IMO.
-
I bought the tabloid today. :P
-
It's still out there? What one was it? WHAT'S THE STORY ON ESTELLE!?
-
7/7/08 Globe. I'll see if I have my scanner handy.

Official rules for shoplifting:
1) They're a big multimillion/billion dollar company, so I'm sure at least one of the products they offer was at one time produced, manufactured, or distributed by a pediphile over the history of their company. Therefore, you are allowed to take from them. In doing this, you are taking money away from someone who could possible abuse a child in their life. It is your reward for being a good person.
2) You've had a shitty life. Remember that time the dude at Mcdonald's didn't fill your medium fry up with a good surplus of fries and left it empty? Yeah fuck him. And the supermarket SELLS fries. They're all alike, they just wanna fuck you over. I'm drinking a fountain drink with too much CO2 in it right now, and not enough Mountainy Dew flavoring in it. Fuck them. You solve problems by taking a tabloid, I do it with a Molotov cocktail through the front window. Potato, Potatoe.
I salute you, its not only your right to take what you want, but its your duty as an American.
-
It's still out there? What one was it? WHAT'S THE STORY ON ESTELLE!?
PM'd since we're the only two that give a shit. :'(
-
Food and clothing is ok if you cannot afford them. Anything else is just shit that you don't really need.
-
I got caught shoplifting once. It was bad. I was on vacation with my friend and her parents, and they had to pay to get me out of the police station. [It really wasn't a jail, just the police station. And I never found out that I was arrested until later on, because the cop never said "you're under arrest" or anything. Whatever lol.] It was the night before we went home, too. :(
I still maintain that stealing from like a person is much worse than retail theft, though.
