Title: What do you think of this PC for gaming?

I would get it with the three 9800 Geforce cards and dual 24" Samsung monitors.

Is this a good / great gaming rig - or is there something less than $9,000 that I would enjoy just as much?

I am not a Dell fan after dealing with their notebooks, and I dont like Gateway...

I have no opinion about HP - do they make a decent gaming rig?

I wouldnt use the machine for anything else.

If all you are going to be doing is gaming on it, you can ~~probably~~ spec that way down.

There aren't many reasons to go that high in a pure gaming rig. You can easily spend half of that and be good for years.

Post by: Smooth Groove on July 08, 2008, 01:04:04 PM: GPU performance is most important for gaming. You only need about 3.0GHZ for the games to not be bottlenecked by CPU performance. Going with a Quad-core is better for future performance.

The 9800 GTX is outdated and was never that good anyways. Get 2 280 GTXes instead. You could get a 3rd one but SLI doesn't work that well in more than 2 card configurations.

If you aren't building your own gaming PC, there are better choices than velocity micro. The HP Blackbird looks and performs much nicer than the one above and probably costs about the same. Alienware, and VoodooPC are good too but they're also more expensive.

I just want something out of the box that works for gaming and works well. I want to be able to play the best games at the highest possible frame-rates with all of the FX turned on. But I do not need a power workstation for rendering 3D scenes or anything.

I will check out this HP Blackbird - owners say good things.

I came across velocity micro from looking at Intel's site.

Also thanks for the video card info - I just assumed that more Vram and more cards = better based on the sites I had read.

The framerate of the Doom 3 demo running on my 2.15 ghz core 2 duo imac was pretty disapointing. It looked SOOO good tho.

If I had to rebuild my PC gaming setup from scratch, I'd try to do so for about $1000 (without the 24" LCD included), and use the rest of the money for games and gaming peripherals (a decent wheel and HOTAS, but I admit those are because I like sim racers and flight sims).

Get a 30" monitor too if you have the money. Gaming on a 30 incher is awesome.

It's really just Nvidia that's still making power inefficient hardware. If you go with an ATI setup, you don't need as much power. In terms of CPU, both Intel and AMD have been making processors that are very power efficient.

It's only for overkill dual - or in abrader's case, triple - card machines

I definitely agree about getting good video hardware and a good KBD/mouse. I dunno about a 30" display-I think that 24" LCDs are the current sweet spot for PC gaming at this point. 30" displays mean super-high native resolutions, I think you're probably better off at 1920x1200 or something and cranking up visual fidelity.

And if something breaks in a year or you just want to put a new fan in or what not, you know exactly what you are working with and not working with a "black box" design you didn't put together. Though I agree not having to reinstall to purge the shitware is also a really big plus.

Two 8800 GTXes or higher end cards should be good enough to drive a 30" monitor. Also, you don't necessarily have to game at the native resolutions. Some of the 30 inchers have good scalers and not everyone have good enough eyes to spot stuff running at non-native resolution.

I'd just buy a computer with an e8400, four gigs of ram, and a 4870. It would cost less than a grand and run everything except Crysis very well.

2. you CERTAINLY dont need 1000W PSU, unless you are doing crossfire, SLI, or really high end GPU [GTX 280]. Depending on your final build, I say 400-600 W

3. do you like money? do you also like performance? get Radeon HD 4750 or 4780. Cheaper, but still awesome cards are also there [HD 3750/80, 8800 GT [or GTX] ]

4. Get a nice almost-3Ghz dual core from Intel. Unless all you'd do is gaming on that PC, which I doubt, CPU is really the most important component in terms of performance for your every day activities

5. Nice case, kb and mouse...dont really know too much about cases and mobos, unfortunately.

6. avoid $2000 or more pre-made gaming rigs no matter what...which is pretty much all of them :/

You only need to spend $1000-ish to get REAALY great computer. This doesnt include monitor, which is most expensive portion, unfortuntately

I have decided that I will wait and buy a computer this year as my christmas present to myself - plus it gives me more time to think everything thru - I was 50 x noob when i made this thread - now I think I have a better handle on best ethics;

- Invest in displays, video hardware

- spend less now and buy a system that you upgrade each year instead of buying the highest spec CPU, etc now

- high DPI mouse is critical

- no gay gamepads

- glossy screen is better for the HD contrast

- smaller capacity higher speed harddrives for gaming only windows machine. macs are for media

- no gay case LED's that generate unnecessary heat.

- cool the video hardware

is that pretty much it?

Also, there's no problem with using a pad if that's what you like. Many new PC games will recognize the 360 controller and have the proper controller layout.

You don't have to use that native resolution though. That was my pt. I only have a 24 incher myself but from what I've read from other PC gamers, there're a few 30" mons that scale really well from 1920x1200. Of course, it'd still be best to run the games at native resolution but that would require a top end videocard or two.

Im thinking im gonna go 24" for the new monitor - non glossy too, I did some looking and I see what SG/TVC mean.
