thank FUCK it isn't downloadble. or portable. those are the standing excuses for developers to half-ass things. a retail 360 version would have been cool, but at least ps2 means i don't have to pray for a domestic release
4 is my favorite -- it actually might be my favorite horizontal shooter ever. really long and clever and challenging, some of the best console graphics from that era, AWESOME CHIPTUNE BUTTROCK
then 5. the saturn version. dodgy visuals, but the free range weapon rules, and it's a lot of fun to replay
then 3...which was amazing at the time, but may not have aged that well. great soundtrack certainly, but it's really easy, and tecnosoft's pixel art was still pretty crude at that point. actually gate of thunder does the tf3 thing better than tf3
I played III a few months ago and, while not as good as IV, it still satands up pretty well.
man, i haven't even thought about these terms since nick rox would abuse them in the pages of gamefan
i thought 'line scrolling' referred to effects like the ones in the fire stage, where they could make each line scroll separately. i don't think there's anything special about being able to change scrolling direction mid-stage, anyway -- there are ancient games that do that
edit: or wait, maybe line scrolling is parallax scrolling where each line scrolls at a different rate. man, i haven't even thought about these terms since nick rox would abuse them in the pages of gamefan

I always called that "raster effects" due to the emulator term for it, like individual line scrolling, or when the screen distorts in a wavelike pattern (i.e. in Dragon Warrior 3 when you step into a teleporter).
