Title: Games vs. DVD's: FIGHT!
Post by: Cheebs on August 04, 2006, 06:52:43 PM
Since this is a mix of OT and Gaming topics I am curious what Evilbore's views would be.

If you had to pick would you rather get a DVD you highly anticipate or a video game? Ignore the price difference and such.

Movie all the way.  Years from now, anticipated games rarely ever stand the test of time and are worth nothing more than a few seconds and a few dollars.  Whereas a classic film can be watched over and over again.  Also, games have not yet elevated to the level of art.  First person that says Shadow of Colossus is going to get POOP IN HIS MOUF.

I'd probably get more entertainment time out of the game, unless the DVD was some super-radical 7-disc set filled with hours upon hours of extra material, and I actually cared enough about the movie to go through all that.  But, that's really rare, and I'm almost guaranteed to get more than two hours out of a game...

I have many more DVDs than games...but that's because they're cheaper. I get almost all my movies for under $10. If you ignore the price difference - games.

There's no DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE game, so DVDs automatically win  :P

games hands down

I never rewatch movies until years after I've bought them

games are more expensive but many have a lot of replay value and the interactivity is entertaning and helps to train my reflexes

but then again I cherry pick them, it's really a waste to buy a lot of duds

Wow, no wonder you hate Batman Begins. Your taste sucks!

in fact the only thing I like to get when it comes to DVDs are discounted anime boxsets, for which the material is from a composite source in 480i and wouldn't benefit from HD video

for the rest, all big movies are to be re-edited in HD anyway

so why waste its ressources acquiring them in 480i, when in the future we'll all enjoy them in 1080p glory? That's progress! :)

Seeing as I have bought about 2 games in the past 2 years, and am a film freak, and have over 400 DVDs, Im gonna say: movies/DVDs, 10 times out of 10.

I pretty much can't derive enjoyment from gaming anymore :( That said, I'll still bend over and get a PS3 for MGS4.

The game is so worth owning. The first two parts of the game the level by level 3rd person shooter and the Sony Mouse (before guncon) shooting in the second part were just awesome. 3rd part had me so fucking confused i didnt know wtf i was doing. And skip the sequel game that was set in las vegas that was pure ass.

As for games vs movies if price wasnt a issue i'd say movies. Mainly cause a i'm lazy and b sometimes my hands need to be on something other than a controler. Plus you cant play games while your sleeping. I can watch movies while i'm sleeping wake up half way inbetween something and still enjoy it. Name one game where you can do that.

But heres the kicker, i'm so fucking disensitized to shit that video games are the only way to freaking scare me (except for event horizon) and build some crazy tension. Dont get me wrong i love movies and dramatic movies. But playing graw and being in the thick of something and haveing to make split second choices really gets me going. Movies are for relaxing while games are for experiancing shit.

As for art i beg to differ about gaming as an art. I love looking at 8bit and 16bit sprite art and i fell in love with GBA games cause of the DSL's bright screen. It illuminated a new form of art to me. How just a few polygons for a character and a beautiful static sprite can make games look so damn awesome is beyond me at times.

those are my thoughts though

I love both and have large collections of both.  But I'm going to have to go with games.  They're interactive, and when done well, can be completely immersive and so much more rewarding than a movie.  That said, it's really difficult to compare the two.  They're like apples and oranges, and are appreciated in different ways.

I'm saying games, too.  I usually prefer to be at least pretending to occupy my brain (and hands).  When I watch tv or anything but the most engrossing movies I get this halfway-bored feeling.
