Praise be the immortal emperor of mankind!

A few of the new pieces of information we now know:
*) Supression (think COH) is in the game in addition to the existing morale factor.
*) Squad sargeants are persistent in the single player campaign and gain levels and attribute points, which can be spent on various attributes to unlock special skills. (frag's note: don't be suprised when this is in the multiplayer game too, Relic has basically telegraphed from the beginning that they are going to be going for a lot of persistent elements in DOW2 multiplayer.)
*) "To balance that out, it's also possible to cause enemies to flee if they feel outnumbered, indicated by a large exclamation point appearing over their heads." - CoH style retreats are apparently in.
*) Cover system works apparently a lot like COH-mouse over to find the areas of best cover for your troops.
*) Squad leaders do not die, they flop over when out of health and can be revived by getting another leader near to bring them back to life (sounds a lot like the AOE3 explorer recovery, which works fine).
*) Squads will reinforce either from drop pods (once per mission, presumably only from SM) or, and here is the BIG news-from shrines, which sounds like relic points on map, this time defended by enemies (and will likely be contested in single player).
*) At least in the single player game (and you know this is going into multiplayer as well, Relic is just being a tease), you'll fight extra difficult mobs at the end of missions, and they will drop freaking LOOT (apparently complete with rarities! OMG grind an RTS for loot!) to equip your squad with.
Here's the blurb on that, so awesome:
The scene looks more like something from Diablo II than a real-time strategy game. The warboss even has a boss health meter visible at the screen's top and special attacks, like a shockwave move and a ground attack that lights up terrain in a line before a string of explosions triggered. The tactics of taking him down involve moving troops out of the way of his ground shockwave, steering clear of his melee attacks, and keeping a squad focused on clearing out the Ork rabble that keeps spawning. Once he is finally killed, he drops his gun, which is labeled as a "blue" item.
*) Game is already running smoothly and obviously looking great. No suprise, given that COH's engine, which DOW2 is based off of, was quite scalable.
It doesn't take a wizard to see where Relic is going with this in multiplayer. They are apparently hybridizing the RTS genre with Diablo-styled loot and levels, which not only better fits the super-customizablility of the W40K franchise, but allows them to open up multiplayer to co-op play in addition to competitive multiplayer.

honestly i'm more excited about this than starcraft 2. loot idea sounds badass as long as they can get it working in MP well.
-
Those screens look so insane. I'm looking forward to GRINDING FOR LOOTS!
-
First DoW was really fun. This one should be awesome.
LOOTS :rock

i hope this preview basically serves as a rolling start and we get the real details on multiplayer at e3. i don't really care about singleplayer RTS -- it's all about the multiplayer (though co-op could be cool).
-
I think the way that multiplayer is going to work in DOW2 is pretty obvious-they'll have full on co-op for loot and levels, and a level-based point-buy system for competitive multiplayer.
The latter worked fine for Age of Empires 3, where players of low "loot" ( home city levels) where pitted against other players of similar loot levels. Hopefully, you'll be able to pick squad characters/loadouts during the game itself, as what kind of tactics you use on one map might be very different than what you use on another.

SC 1.5 is snore. Diablo 3 is the most exciting bliz project
-
starcraft 2 is for playing the single player because blizzard is like the only company in the world that know how to make single player rts campaigns that are really badass.
multiplayer for sc2 is totally unappealing for me. they are catering to the e-sport crowd, not the "wanna have fun" crowd.

I'm sure that there will be enough n00bs in the public servers so you can still have fun playing against crap opponents. Most of the good players only do private matches. Hell, you can easily find matches in WC3 and SC full of the "wanna have fun" crowd.

tell me why I should buy this.
why should I buy yet another RTS game.
I mean, havent you played enough?

SC 1.5 is old hat. Plenty of RTS titles have surpassed its mechanics

new preview up over at shacknews. the following caught my eye:
http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=930
The armor and weapons were quite cool: the force commander, a melee specialist, was equipped with a massive Thunder Hammer. Each piece will have a set of statistics, including ratings such as Damage Per Second
DPS stats on weapons. In an RTS. So Awesome.
The single player story features a branching mission structure. Several missions can be chosen from at any given time, each with its own story and rewards. Other than weapons or armor, rewards also come in the form of experience points, which boost the level of the squads. The demo level had a reward of 845 XP.
I think we can all admit that doing a mission for XP is way better than pretty much any reward possible. I hope they carry this over to co-op with really challenging missions, it would make for a killer online experience.

Fear not the psyker.
Beware the alien, the mutant...the heretic.

warhammer 40k is the perfect gaming franchise for the internet age. It's starkly zero-sum and eliminationist, full of over the top brutality and it's characters sport the same sort of fervor and zeal that the most cracked of forum posters have.
why should I buy yet another RTS game.
I mean, havent you played enough?
No, there's always more awesomeness in RTS-it's something you can bet on. It's one of the best diversified genres in all of video gaming, as its ability to span an entire spectrum of mechanics and playstyles is so great.
Most people who are tired of RTS games never play anything but Blizzard and Command and Conquer games, only play boring campaigns and not skirmish or multiplayer, the former being not really made for newbies and the latter being one of the most style over substance (deliciously so!) franchises ever.

Good to see Relic has shaped up, cut off the fat from the team.
