I just saw some of it on GTTV.

doesn't look like it will have any gameplay in that trailer.

Don't get too hyped up for the trailer.  It is like 10 seconds long and boring.

Sounds like a BioWare game

What a terrible trailer.  This game has been in development forever and they don't even show off anything resembling gameplay.  The setting is so generic that it could have come out of any developer, too.  SMH, Bioware.

It's Bio-Fucking-Ware. It's on PC. It simply cannot fail.

You keep believing that.  What with the title Origins, it sounds like the game is episodic now.  What with this being EA, it will be lowest common denominatored for consoles, I bet.

Glass is either half-full or half-empty, duh.

I see an amazing looking PC RPG in the making, you see another Jade Empire White Man.

Look at it this way:  the game was debuted in 2004, and we have NEVER SEEN GAMEPLAY.  That is even worse than FFXIII.

Looks like it's borrowing some style from the LotR movies (in a good way, I'll add). Then again, all western fantasy games seem to be borrowing from those movies these days.

Major disappointment.

If the people creating this thought that was something to get it's core audience hyped for the game, you have to wonder about their decision-making abilities for other aspects of the game.

So far Dragon Age is 0 for 2 out of the gate.

I was reading the Bioware forums and the Marketing/PR director? (I think it was he/she) was stating how the 9th "Teaser Page" was actually a pretty cool thing they did for the fans and stating that they should be hyped over just that. Now this shit. I wonder how they'll explain away and murky looking video that had awful dialogue and no gameplay whatsoever.

Yup. This game looks like total ripped off LOTR shit.

I'm just shocked they went from the terrible Forgotten Realms setting and then created their OWN LOTR rip off, which is all Forgotten Realms was in the first place.

Oh well.

If the trailer ended with a "Lord of the Rings: Whatever" title, would anyone have noticed?

I absolutely despise the use of 'generic' and 'meh', but damn if this game doesn't fit the bill.  How about just a little sense of originality?  Of course I'm still there on day one since it's Bioware.

yes, everything you saw was in-engine.

Well, at least that is something to be happy about.

Also, that geoff dude said that a second trailer will be released tomorrow. In it, you will get a better feel for the "scope of combat" in the game. Which means we will probably see a big sprawling fight. I wonder how that works into the mechanics of the game?  Will it be like an RTS where you build an army (through adventuring with a small team, ala NWN2) and then do a battle? Or will it be like the Total War series where you control groups of fighters? shrug.

What's up with the characters' skin texture? Sorry I'd take even the most bland and generic anime art over this any day of the week. I don't like WRPGs and this game's probably not gonna change my mind... only game that could probably do that at this point would be getting Richard Garriott back to make a single player Ultima X.

Wow, that was terrible.  I had to watch the first forgettable trailer again just to confirm that this was indeed new.  Looks like Osama Bin Laden set up the BioBomba.  So, is this EA's fault or what?  It would be kinda poetic if 2 EA cockhead things happened in one week.

In other words:  no gameplay people, don't bother watching.

I don't get the fuss over the teaser drawing similarities to LOTR, but whatever. It's an entire genre inspired in some way by LOTR. It is what it is. Dragon Age is a fantasy game from BioWare, I'm not sure what people were expecting if not this. And we still don't even know what this is, but it's interesting enough so far.

Maybe that's where we're just going to have to differ. I'm going to assume the gameplay is fun, because I've not had reason to doubt BioWare's abilities from what I've played. I should say that I don't particularly follow games all that much nowadays, so pre-release marketing from publishers and gameplay dissection from whomever is largely lost on me. I don't pay attention. But I watched the trailer, I like BioWare, so I'm interested.

*If it comes to consoles.

We will have to disagree, because BioWare's console outings are one of the big reasons I'm willing to let myself have little faith in this.  I am not sure if they are capable of making a "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate 2 anymore.

Guys it's BioWare. Name one shitty BioWare game except Jade Empire.

They haven't made any bad games, but they've stopped making great ones.  And Jade Empire isn't that bad.

Mass Effect was a masterpiece.  Please tell me what was wrong with that game besides the technical issues.  It was fucking incredible... such a good narrative, solid gunplay with a cover mechanic, great dialogue system, amazing visuals, and such an awesome atmosphere.  It really felt like you were taking part in an epic space odyssey.

bobo the sidequests were all the same!!!11

then don't fucking play the sidequests.  I only did like two of them and still clocked almost 25 hours.

There are no worthy complaints about this game.  Demi, you can fuck right off.

I don't hate Mass Effect.  I merely think it is good.  It's far too short, and the squad mate AI is absolutely useless.
Title: Re: Dragon Age trailer
Post by: CHOW CHOW on July 13, 2008, 04:07:57 PM
How is 20-25 hours for the main quest too short?  Come on..

And you have to remember that the first game in a series more often than not has the least amount of content simply because they have to work on the engine.  Now that UE3 is fully optimized for ME, Bioware can focus more on content and have a longer game.  This happens all the time.

The squad AI could use improvement but it's not a big issue at all.  And if you use Biotic squad members, they use their abilities all the time.  You see them lifting people up in the air and throwing them across the room very often.

mass effect biggest fault is the total lack of varieties.

almost all areas in the main quest are buildings and shit and they are all small.

and the planets are all empty and barren with one building which is the same as any other planet.

The gunplay was fine.  I admittedly rarely used the cover system because it really wasn't that necessary, but the actual gunplay was fine.  I had a Vanguard... she specialized in shotties, pistols and of course had several Biotic abilities.  She was a beast and I had zero issues with taking down enemies with the shotgun and pistol.

Maybe they should have given it some more time to actually get some content in then? Seriously now, that's the worst excuse for a lack of content that I've ever come across.

It's too short because my final save time in KOTOR was upwards to 60 hours - did I mention that game was more varied then ME as well? Shocking, coming from an Xbox game. Xbox. One.

No, it's not.  Proprietary engines can take as long as 18 to 24 months to create.  A normal dev time for a AAA title is 2 to 3 years, so the first game in a series almost always has the shortest length.  In ME's case, they were able to license out UE3 but they still had to do a ton of optimizations and asset creation.  Now that much of that stuff is out of the way, I fully expect ME2 to be bigger and better.

That's still a shitty excuse. A really, really shitty one. If the alloted time isn't enough for development of tech and content, then more time or resources needs to be alloted. And it's not like content creation stands still while the technological base is crafted, so if anything it'd then appear to be a managerial shortcoming. Regardless, actually falling in line and making such an excuse for the company, that's just rot.

It's not a shitty excuse.

Take a look at a game like Uncharted.  ND's proprietary ICE engine no doubt took over a year just to develop. That's a big chunk out of the dev time used on engine creation and optimization that won't be required for the sequel.  Your suggestion of just allotting another year or two to the dev time simply isn't reasonable, financially.

That's not my problem. Games shipping with precious little content, that is my problem, as a consumer. As is the problem with other consumers making excuses for the developer.

I actually love the empty feel of the planets, this is how I imagine them to look like in the first 50-100 years of space colonization. Some mines, some labs and a fucking vast of nothing in between.

The only thing that bothers me is how they use the SAME FUCKING ROOM AND DUNGEON design for dungeons on different planets. I mean Jesus, how hard is it to make a map in UE3? Takes one day.

This is unfair of me, but I really wish that Mass Effect took some sort of cue from Star Control 2 and Star Flight.  Flying around the planets reminded me of that.  Why has no one tried to update those games for modern computers?

mass effect biggest fault is the total lack of varieties.

almost all areas in the main quest are buildings and shit and they are all small.

and the planets are all empty and barren with one building which is the same as any other planet.

INFINITE LINE

(i hope)

coming to consoles

Greg Zeschuk from Bioware just got onstage to demo Dragon Age: Origins for us. YAY!!!  "The foundation of another great franchise on the PC" he just said, "and in the future on the consoles."

HA

only PC gamers will know the full story

when Dragon Age 2 comes out, console people will be scratching their heads unable to tie together the diffuse storyline elements

Rigfags suiciding. Borys PM me if things get serious, OK buddy  :lol

Good day to be a fan of Bioware's superior console efforts, I'll tell you that much.

bah, nothing about that screenshot looks console-ified. The franchise may well ultimately feature games for both PCs and consoles but i'm hoping that the PC series will remain distinct.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

There's room for you in my grimy fuck dumpster, too, Boris.  You can hop in with me and drohne now, or you can wait until Bioware is making waggle games.  The choice is yours.

Dragon Age being another bastardized console game makes me so glad that I still haven't played Throne of Bhaal.  It's the last great game from Bioware.

Boris, I yearn for your European skin.  I want you to experience my flesh before I experience yours.  Let's plan it like that in our own little Dragon Age.

I hope it's adjustable to that level for running around towns and stuff.
Screen from the console version?

Well, the future console versions help explain the shit-tastic graphics and LOTR cutscenes.

At least we will get free DLC.  :-\ (maybe?)

Now that I've watched actual gameplay video from here...

...I can see that it's just an adjustable camera.

Two Worlds > Dragon Age

Two Worlds > Dragon Age

The main draw of Two Worlds was the unintentional humor.

I actually like that screen above much more than the rest of the screens they've showed, for some reason.

I think it might still be in.  You can zoom in pretty far.
