THE BORE

My system was manufactured in November '05, and I thought that I was pretty much out of the hole for defective hardware. My assumption was that if the system hadn't failed by now, it wasn't going to fail at all. As you can guess, I was wrong.
I wasn't using my 360 for much other than an occasional solo Rock Band session, and for watching downloaded episodes of Dr. Who, Lost, Battlestar, etc. Once I got the TH demo though, it started freezing mid-game. I'd try and reboot, and it'd RROD. Then I'd reboot again and it'd freeze during the boot sequence. Little known fact: if it freezes during the boot animation it makes this funny beeping sound that is not unlike a computer failing during the POST test. But often after a couple failed boots the system would get to the blades and run the demo flawlessly from start to finish. I got through it a couple times, and wanted to play again now that you can unlock a couple other character classes. But sadly, I've at last reached the point where it RRODs every time I flick on the power. I talked to one of Microsoft's counselors this morning, and he was very understanding and consoling. I am being e-mailed a UPS label that I can use to ship my system off to their repair facilities in Mesquite, Texas.
So what's the verdict? Did Florida's 100-degree weather and ridiculous humidity finally claim my 360's life, or is it a case of Dyack-induced suicide?
Also, am I going to have to connect to the internet everytime I wanna play my Rock Band DLC now?

It is appointed unto Xbox once to die, and then the refurbishment.

Friends don't let friends play Too Human.
Buy Titan Quest.
I think MS has some sort of digital rights transfer tool available online where you can transfer your content from the old xbox to a new one. It is somewhere on xbox.com

xbox 360 sux

I guess Odin wasn't willing.

I guess you missed the DRM Tool
-
Red-ringed by the humidity of Dyack's 100 degree flatulence. :omg
-
Such a disgraceful death
Then again, my first 360 died while running Far Cry Instincts Predator. >:(
-
too human? your 360 couldn't even die with dignity :(
but on the bright side, microsoft have now got a tool for transferring DRMd content between consoles, so your rock band songs should be fine
-
I had heard something about DRM transfer between systems before, but hadn't paid much attention since my Xbox was alive and well. It's cool that they just e-mailed me a shipping label......last I heard you had to wait for MS to send you a coffin. I guess I'll be heading out to the UPS Store soon.
Buy Titan Quest.
I don't think my PC would run Titan Quest very well, but at the same time Diablo 2 looks a little too hideous for me to get into. Something about it lacks the charm of old emulated 16-bit/arcade titles, which I normally don't mind at HD resolutions.
-
Couple of months later and you would have been outside the gracious 3 year warranty.
:bow Focus on the repair :bow2
-
ng2 killed my xbox :'(
Well, that's a better way to go than Too Human, fo sho.
-
repair center in texas. :lol
it's actually a staging center. the repairs are done in reynosa.
-
Holy shit that lasted a long time.
A simple old DVD killed my first 360. The second died when I hit the power button to turn it on (in hindsight I see what I did wrong there). My third has been going strong but I wish the fucker would die so I can get one with a heatsink in it.
-
Condolences.
My launch unit is still going strong. :rock :punch

What resolution is your screen at? If you run it in windowed mode, it looks as good as it ever did. I run at 1920x1200, and Diablo II runs in a window like 1/4th the size of my screen, and I can live with that. Heck, for this sort of thing, I prefer playing in a window. I play WoW windowed, too. The only way to play.
-
No idea. Have you tried running Diablo 2 in compat mode or anything like that?

I simply cannot play Diablo 2 full-screen. It looks like a fucking Genesis game.

That's a bit of a stretch.

No wait, I can see it now.
-
When it's stretched to 1920x1200, it's a different story.

It's okay, I just wanted to post a picture of Maffer Dragonhand.
Because out of all the "BONESNOT THE FLAPDANGLER" names in Diablo II, nothing can beat the sheer absurdity of "Maffer Dragonhand."
Seriously, his first name is "Maffer." That's already god-like status right there.
-
i refuse to BUY a 360 until this shit goes away
in the meantime, i'll just borrow

Light Crusader :rock
Played the crap out of that game

I got my system back today, barely a week after I sent it in. Great turnaround time.
The strange thing is that it's the exact same console I sent in. DLC works without a license transfer, and the manufacturing date is the same. Somebody here claimed that they didn't repair the systems in Texas, but I fail to see how they could have gotten it from here to Mexico in less than a week's time.
Does getting a repair done extend the warranty another year, or will I be fucked if the system dies after November '08?
-
They do the license transfer there. It proably is the same box, they send that shit back when they find out you're lying.
-
Why would I (or anyone else) lie about having a busted console? They gave me a new faceplate and a 1-month XBL card, so they probably did something or other.
-
Because you have a known vendetta against Microsoft.
-
I just sent my refurb in the other day, after they replaced my new one with it last year. Good thing they extended that warranty, I can handle not having the console for a week or two once a year as long as I don't have to pay :-\
Though I'm hoping that it's ironed out enough now that whatever I get back won't red ring next year.

::)
If I had a "vendetta", I don't see what sending a working console to their repair center would really accomplish.
