Title: what makes a Final Fantasy game?

Kitase spoke about carrying the Final Fantasy torch and commented on how this game will be unique, yet familiar. "In the grand scheme of things, Final Fantasy XIII is probably very different and new from anything you've seen in the series before. But, everybody on the team has played XII and the previous titles and there is an unseen connection there among the series." He then went on to tell a story about a conversation with Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series. In it he asked Sakaguchi about what makes a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game. Jokingly, Sakaguchi told him that as long as you have white text on a blue background, you should be fine. Final Fantasy XIII doesn't have that, but Kitase says it's still a continuation. Megaton?

CONGLATURATION, WE HAVE FINISHED COMING UP WITH THE STORY FOR FFXIII (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168827)

...oh God, this game. This stupid fucking game. It's going to make FF12's development look like a short wait, isn't it.

FFXII took 5 or 6 years, right?

What's interesting is this game started out on the PS2. It's gone through... maybe 3, 4 years of development? It may take as long as FFXII.

4.25.  Started development at the end of 2001.

Started development in spring 2004, so it's already taken as long as FFXII.

somewhat of a derail but...from Crushed's link:

'1UP: Has there been any negative reaction from Japanese Xbox 360 owners about the FFXIII announcement? It's not coming out on 360 there, and Japanese gamers won't be able to play the U.S. import on their systems, since the console's region-locked.

SH: There doesn't seem to be any overly negative feedback yet, as Japanese users have known since the beginning that it's coming to PS3. '

what the hell. They're actually serious about not releasing it in Japan? They release International versions of all their bullshit over here and not the 360 version that the rest of the world gets?

I'm sure they'll release it if, when the time comes, they think there'll actually be a market for it.  They just haven't made any definite plans yet.

This is what I assumed. However, they're actually saying this in print. How on earth does knowledge that it is coming to the PS3 also make up for not being able to play it on your 360?

I need an expert on Japanese culture to explain this one to me.

Seriously though, it looks like after the initial preproduction period in 2004-5 most of the staff spent most of their time working on other games (like Crisis Core, Revenant Wings and My Life as a King) while the core tech guys worked out how to make/deal with a modern high-level development environment and the marketing guys tried to figure out what the hell was going on with the next-gen market.  Development doesn't seem to have ramped up until after the release of Crisis Core last fall, and now again with the addition of the KH/Versus in-game graphics and animation team.  So it's not quite the same as FF12 where much of the team was wholly devoted to the project for the whole dev period excepting the small peripheral group that made FFTA.

I stopped at FF8. I just remember in FF7 I had to grind to defeat the weapons.

I'm sorta impressed by the hold Final Fantasy has with it's fans and in general. And the man juice ejaculated over FFVII and all it's various offshoots is disturbing, even with 'casuals'.

In NA and Europe it's pretty much a spin on First Fuck Syndrome.
Seeing anyone 25+ going gagga over it is pretty disturbing. Final Fantasy is the Star Wars of games.  *smh*

I don't know. I think they just managed to pull it off with X-2. It was almost take-it-or-leave-it and although it was jovial, it still had a bloody good system, and was plenty nostalgic. But I think they fucked up big time with the rapeage of VII. I'm a pretty big FF whore, but I didn't give any of the VII spin-offs more than a look of disgust. Starting off XIII as a mega-franchise was a bad move, imo.
I don't follow gaming news that much, so it just impresses me that it still sells and it still is seen as a 'system seller'. I thought it would've of died off by now.

1. white text on a textbox.
2. vision of non linearity in terms of exploration, giving the players options and rewarding them for doing so (ie. ffvi's world of ruin where side quests were entirely optional but important, and you could do them like at any time, or going to wutai in ff7, or finding shumi village in ff8)
3. Awesome kick ass summons
4. great music
5. a new and interesting customization system that makes the game feel completely different from the game before it. This gives FF versatility and variety that few rpg, or, game franchises period don't or never had. Hence why each FF discussion turns into "my ff is better than you ff" because the series is so goddamn personal with each entry.
6. biggs and wedge
7. moogles
8. chocobos
9. cid
10. a story that tackles semi-mature themes, albeit prematurely and some entirely too self indulgent. but for some reason, I love them. Final Fantasy games have this crazy sense of adventure that makes me smile. I don't know why. i just think back in FF8 where Squall takes Rinoa to lunatic pandora ON HIS HANDS AND FEET and then they go into space and she goes batshit and you have to SAVE HER FROM OUTER SPACE and I get all tingly inside. Or the opera scene in ff6. or climbing mount ordeals or going into the pits of hell in ff4. or cross dressing to save tifa in ff7. so on and so on. Ever since I've played FFVII the games have captured my imagination more than any other game series. there's so many memorable partrs in every single one of the games, which is why FF12 sucks, because it's a game about nothing.

Can't explain the Japanese.

Like, in general, I can't.

FF7 is great despite being our first fuck. ff7 haters suck.

It's not a true Final Fantasy game until there are at least 2 remakes on Nintendo platforms.
