Just got this a couple days ago. It's a bit front loaded but the jazzy production is amazing, and most of the MCs on the album bring the heat. J-Live has a great track on here
(http://tinyurl.com/5h5hdp)
I've only listened to a few tracks so far but I'm digging it. It's another vintage sounding hip hop record. I suppose some might complain about lots of "underground" hip hop being stuck in the past, but there's a lot of variation here in terms of production styles from boom bap to reggae
(http://tinyurl.com/6bh7gp)
I pimp this in every music thread because it's so damn good. Definitely one of the best hip hop albums I've heard in years. The production is great, the lyrics are great, Blu's flow is staggering, etc. It's a very, very good debut album reminiscent of Common's Resurrection. Introspective, honest lyrics+hungry MC+blazing production=this
(http://tinyurl.com/5v25mh)
You might have heard this I dunno. The production is simply amazing, and outshines the MCs in many cases; 9th Wonder is definitely one of the best producers around, and hopefully he'll find a rapper who matches his skill one day (his colabs with Murs are great btw). In the meantime there's this record. There are plenty of bangers here, and it also features a pretty fun concept. Basically the entire album is glued together with a parody of urban radio, from "quiet storm" to corny afternoon DJs

of course iv'e heard the listening.

im not saying Hell Hath No Fury was a bad album, its just Lord Willin was better. Production values are lower (im not audiophile or anything but even i can tell) but the whole album feels a lot more personal. plus this was before all their record label woes so there was no outside influence on the beats or anything. Comedy Central is my favourite track on the album, the delivery and lyrics are ridiculous
...and thats about it, dont listen to many albums since i prefer picking out tracks i like, so individual artist recommendations:
JoJo Pellegrino
Himu since you played GTA3 you should recognise this freestyle (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq2glX39etk&feature=related) off GTA3 game radio. Checked out some of his other stuff a few months back and he's now my favourite rapper. He's white and italian which automatically makes him badass, heres another youtube of him rapping over another beat off GTA3. (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xNrRe6weNks) I dont know what i really like about him, i like his voice and flow, theres nothing that stands out lyrically though he does have a few great lines. Another youtube of him on an amazing beat (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjg9yWwi3ps) and his lyrics actually stand out here
ALSO THIS IS THE MOST BADASS HIPHOP SONG EVER. ITS ABOUT BEING IN THE FUCKING MAFIA. THE VIDEO IS MAFIA THEMED. THE BEAT HAS SOME SORT OF ITALIAN INSTRUMENTS. PS THE BEAT IS THE BEST BEAT EVER. IM NOT EVEN KIDDING. HE QUOTES THE FUCKING GODFATHER IN HIS LYRICS. LISTEN TO THIS OH GOD I HAVE BONER THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING HIPHOP TRACK EVER. LISTEN TO THIS SERIOUSLY. JOJO PELLEGRINO distinguished black fellow. STANTON ISLAND SON! (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x0BzOCmXag4)
Gangstarr
its Guru and DJ Premier so its basically one of the best hip-hop duo's ever
Now you're mine (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aHszX62B9EU) beat is amazing, lyrics own
Work (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PpwLPUlVQjA) "..are you working? what kinda work do you do?"
BYS (bust your shit) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nLym6JTe3dA) pretty unique beat
Rep Grows Bigger (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ3bhHS6g-U) makes you feel like you're a crime boss sat in a big ass skyscraper looking over the city w00t
Knoc-turn'al - The Knoc video here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yLnUjewnbNg) i cannot find an mp3 of this anywhere, but anyway knoc-turnal kinda disappeared off the map. has a flow similar to juelz santana
and finally
Cool Kids
its like the 80's all over again (even though i wasnt born then lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) no but really these guys have just popped up and are causing massive amounts of hype. every single beat is fucking amazing (bar none, honestly) and the lyrics arent deep or anything they just fit perfectly like hiphop used to be
black mags (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=b34U3-CutuU) bassiest beat ever, song about bmx bikes but its cool
a little bit cooler (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cls-QMQgwqM&feature=related) this song is basically owning wannabe gangsters and other people. talks about eating cereal on saturday mornings and street fighter on the megadrive / genesis
one two (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1G0MDJ_TgqM&feature=related) after the first chorus bit the beat is RIDICULOUS. its like HOLY SHIT
also fuck lil wayne
holy shit thats a big post hope u appreciate it distinguished black fellow

I often go on hip hop binges where I focus on a particular group/artist/etc. Right now I'm spazzing on 9th Wonder produced albums
(http://tinyurl.com/5q5tqn)
From a production standpoint it's very solid. To me 9th is like a mixture of Pete Rock and Dj Premier. Like Pete Rock he's a master of finding the right soul sounds mixed with hard drums, and his chopping reminds me of Premo in terms of deconstructing a sample, making it unrecognizable. I especially like the beat on the title track.
As an MC, Murs is more than capable of holding his own. He struts the line between conscious rhymes, battle raps, and the occasional "lapsed gangsta" tone. Walk Like a Man deftly displays his story telling skills as he weaves a three act tale of bliss, loss, and revenge. My only problem is that many the songs see-saw between instances where he either plays the pimped out fuck-em-and-leave-em playboy (Bad Man) or the sensitive good-guy-who-chicks-just-don't-understand whiner (The Pain); granted I like The Pain, but it seems like this battle between brains and...well, brains - takes up way too much of the 10 track album.
That being said Murs shines in most other aspects. He attacks the title track with the confidence and arrogance of a legend, and addresses a variety of sensitive issues on And This is For..., a track I wish I could stuff down many faux gangsta rap artists and fans' throats.

ok, this is basically a little history in grime and track recommendations all in one, its a pretty tough genre to get into and like, just keep listening and you will start to like it
so, grime basically started (well, was brought to peoples attention) with this song Wiley - Wot Do You Call It? (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vBvhx_QBniI) Now "garage" music had been massive in the UK for a long long time and people had always MC'ed over the garage tracks, HOWEVER, a new style of MC was starting emerge (grime MC's) and this track was Wiley basically saying the music he made WAS NOT garage, it was what he called "Eskigarage". Wiley was a huge MC on the underground and he is still considered the "godfather" of grime.
After Wiley released that track, one of the MC's he'd brought to pirate radio stations and "raised" released another absolutely massive grime tune that really hit home that this emerging genre was going to stay. It was Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U. (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=llX-j1CDvp4) Most people have heard of Dizzee, but never seem to have heard this tune which is one of my fav's.
Another MC that was causing a storm (for being absolutely batshit insane) was Crazy Titch. He released a tune called "I Can See U" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH16CG2VBY&feature=related) which still remains one of my favourite grime tunes ever. He released a second (and final) video for his track "Sing Along" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iM59LQOn_0Q&feature=related) which has a nice beat with tons of orchestral samples.
After Crazy Titch emerged, so did a lot of other MC's. Around this time there was a lot of "Beef" with various MC's "sending" for eachother. Sending is basically diss tracks or quick mentions of their name on pirate radio. Instead of rappers who write a diss track then never meet up, grime MCs would meet up in "clashes" where they would try and out MC eachother. Here's the most famous (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-ORA0XoUa80), where Crazy Titch sends for Dizzee in front of his face during a regular pirate radio gig, pisses him off and everything spirals out of control.
FUN FACT: Crazy Titch is now in jail for 35 years for stabbing someone
Kano was another great MC that released a track called "P's & Q's" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=n2VFF4_tto0) which was an underground smash and even managed some airtime on regular radio (this was and still is a big issue for grime, many radios refuse to play it, its not commercial friendly music) He released a tune the year after called "Typical Me" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-qhPxiNMuf0) which was a diss aimed bouncers and clubs etc.
On "Typical Me" there was a cameo by an MC called Ghetto. Fast forward a few years from that tune to modern day grime, and Ghetto is one of the most highly rated grime MC's leading a crew called "The Movement". Wiley isn't as big in grime anymore, but still heads a group of MC's (and a record label) called "Boy Better Know". These two groups are pretty much at war, lots of diss tracks, lots of clashes etc.
One of the most controversial attacks at Wiley was included in a free mixtape called "Logan Samas War Report", whereby nearly every member of the movement went after Wiley.
Ghetto's diss to Wiley (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CSCh3c1ysGs&feature=related)
Devlin whos a little white taco babby who's lyrics sound like nursery rhymes diss to Wiley (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zKhUiZZlulU)
Scorcher dissing Wiley (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HWkx-bTZ9ZU)
there was also a couple other dubs that diss'ed Wiley. But then Wiley came out with a 6 minute tune (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I7Bi9u-KYWM) that absolutely DESTROYED the Movement, showing how the Godfather of grime was still on top.
So yeah, thats pretty much grime in a nutshell, theres a few I've missed out, but here comes a nice list of grime tunes full of bassy electro beats:
Lethal B - Pow! (Forward Riddim) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9j2_sm5tSjE&feature=related) hahah this song got banned from radios and clubs because when it came out people went beserk, absolute banger
Skepta - Reign (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KccbWKUqdKw) hoooooly shit, Skepta is one of the biggest MCs on the Boy Better Know side. Stonker of a beat, even has chiptune samples :-[
Durrty Goodz - Keep Up (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XSN04jymsW0) "Roll up, roll up, come and get ya X!" weeey, what a tune, awesome beat. FUN FACT: this guy is Crazy Titch's older brother
Wiley - Sinner (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=a0l67nNvgvk) Wiley's diss to Scorcher, its got an amazing beat
Wiley vs Lethal B compilation (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nbuaVT2HJA8&feature=related) all sorts of disses in there "ya mums got atheletes foot, flast chest black face blacker than soot!" is still a MASSIVE line
Nu Brand Flexx - Anthem (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=saiogb3zP_8&feature=related) abit mindless, but got a nice beat
Devilman on Radio 1 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EwhJi5RMC2E) the MF Doom of the grime world, hard to get into but once you do he's awesome. The beat is awesome but its never been found :(
Devilman on a Bassline / 4x4 / Garage beat (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cny427lsx8A) where he disses Skepta and busts out some old lyrics. I'll fully understand if you just laugh when you watch this, he seems like a bit of a clown but he IS heavy
Devilman dissing some unknown MC's (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MlFG5gcdi0Y&feature=related) HEAVY beat, he lyrically KILLS them, honestly i laugh everytime i hear this because Devilman destroys them
Dizzee Rascal - Stand up Tall (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=L3HMogp86cI) this tune was a surprise, because it used a proper garage beat by Yungstarr, funky tune
Skepta vs Ghetto part 1 (part 2's on youtube as well) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uHxa6HMMKa0) clashing on radio, quality is ok for pirate radio actually "ill flip my flip knife shank him six times!" these two are the biggest in grime at the minute
P Money - What did he say? (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nxY4IfusKDA&feature=related) I thought grime was gonna die this year, but this guy has reassured me its still alive, good old grime here
Devilman - Swing dem (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qjHv0hK17YY&feature=related) Devilman dissing Skepta, they've been at war for ages but to be fair he gets him here. Production is really good as well
Roll Deep - When I'm Ere (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ENq5rJDFA1o) big at the time, nice grimey tune
Wiley - Pies (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m9ZK6skaF_4) if u dont like this song u r a big taco!!!!!!!!!! no but really its a proper grimey, electro grimey tune
Skepta - DUPPY (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5VJnngsZl0g) IM IM DOIN IT AGAIN, THEY TRIED TO STOP ME BUT IM DOIN IT AGAIN! TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNE
JME, Skepta - Spaceship (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P7GpEBbROyA&feature=related) Fucking epic, absolutely amazing beat and even calls out Devilman
Wong - Not a Hater (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_TxiNfUWO-I) chinaman makes grime, hell yes. its actually a pretty good song, remixes some orchestra tune. IGNORE THE BLACK AND WHITE BIT AT THE START, ITS AN INTRO. PROPER TUNE STARTS LATER ON
and here's the tune that was Wiley's way of saying "grimes dead, fuck you lot theres no money" --> Wearing my Rolex (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dnezldGu7JU) and if you dont like it you hate being happy you miserable bastard
there we go :) ask if you want anymore or hit me on PM's for mp3s cos this shit is rare and not on vinyl or cd so it should be ok to post
-

What is wrong with reggaeton? the amount of hate that genre gets is stupid.
Because most people recognize the genre by fucks like Daddy Yankee. ugh. i did for a really long time. there's good reggaeton and there's bad reggaeton. good reggaeton is very melodic like ayer la vi and bad reggaeton is obnoxious drum beats over high pitched faux gangster whining.
