Doctor Manhattan does look good. I'm glad they kept him naked instead of giving him some weird thong.

I'm willing to accept that. I'm all for nudity in movies, but having a naked blue man on screen for 2 hours wouldn't sit well in the US.
I forget, is The Black Freighter in or out?
I hate getting hyped for this, because I know it's unavoidable that so much will get cut out and I'll end up being disappointed.

Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming comic book-to-film adaption, “Watchmen”, has announced a direct-to-DVD animated release of “Tales of the Black Freighter”. The DVD is set to hit stores five days after the March 6, 2009 theatrical release of “Watchmen”. “Tales of the Black Freighter” will also include a documentary-style film called “Under the Hood” which explores deeper into each of the characters’ backstories.
“Watchmen” is then scheduled for a DVD release four months later, along with an extended edition which will interweave the “Black Freighter” animated feature into the theatrical “Watchmen” cut. 22- to 26-minute webisodes called “The Watchmen Motion Comic” are also planned to be included with the release.
Never really heard about the comic, but those costumes are like B-movie quality, specifically the batman rip-off.they're supposed to be cheap looking. smh

Tales of the Black Freighter, a comic within the Watchmen comic, will be adapted as a direct-to-video animated feature, which will be released on March 11, 2009.[74] It was originally included in the script,[61] but was cut due to budget restrictions,[60] because the segment would have added $20 million to the budget, as Snyder wanted to film it in a stylized manner reminiscent of 300.[74] Snyder considered including the animated film in the final cut,[10] but the film was already approaching a three hour running time.[74] Gerard Butler, who starred in 300, voices the Captain in the film, having been promised a role in the film, which never materialized.[75]
The Tales of the Black Freighter DVD will also include Under the Hood, a documentary detailing the characters' backstories, which takes its cue from Hollis Mason's memoirs in the novel. The film will be released on DVD four months later, and Warner Bros. is also considering releasing an extended edition, with the animated film edited back into the main picture. In addition, a dozen short films (each around twenty minutes in length) will be released on the internet, using narration over the panels of the comic strip to familiarize newcomers to the story. These may also be released on DVD.
The first cut was three hours long. In keeping the film tight, Snyder dubbed himself "the gatekeeper" of the comic's easter eggs, "while [the studio] conspire to say, 'No. Length, length, length. Playability.' [...] I've lost perspective on that now, because to me, the honest truth is I geek out on little stuff now as much as anybody. Like, people will go, 'We've got to cut. You don't need that shot of Hollis Mason's garage sign.' And I'm like, 'What are you talking about? Of course you do. Are you crazy? How will people enjoy the movie without shit like that in it?' So it's hard for me."

He had a thong on during the Vietnam scene.
edit: Beaten!
no problem. i'm guessing it's a comiccon trailer that leaked early.
ahhh ic.
fuck now I have to see batman in theatres.
This is true. I wasn't planning on going this weekend, since the thought of being surrounded a million Manabytes is a little nauseating.
I'm worried because our free screenings usually don't have trailers. but if they skip the Watchmen trailer OUR COMPANY WILL RIOT
I plan on catching a screening of Batman tomorrow morning- local theater starts showing it at 9 AM for some reason. I figure the earlier I go the emptier the theater will be, so I'll let you sluts know what the deal is. I also don't mind saying that I'm excited to see TDK because I reserve my petty bitching to Nintendo and actual terrible movies like, you know, Speed Racer.
I'll be honest, Triumph, when I do see it. The fact is, I saw the first movie, felt it was a 7/10, and then come home to find out that it's been deemed the second coming by everyone on the internet (and not just on GAF). Congrats, Nolan, you made a decent Batman movie, but it was by no measure great.:lol

I love hearing Batman Begins hate.
The movie is good, not great. The over-dramatic serious tone ruined it. It's been removed from The Dark Knight. Even the darker moments have humor in it. It really is the best Batman movie and probably the best movie of the year (so far at least). It's great. Now get the fuck out of here with Batman! This thread is about :bow Watchmen :bow2

if i didn't own Absolute Watchmen already, I'd have bought it just after seeing that.

I want to buy it, but it's not available anywhere. :(

the only essential books i bought were Dazzler and the first two Daredevils
i should get the Tomb of Dracula ones and also i'd like some of the X-Men ones simply for filthy nostalgia purposes
i still thinkspoiler (click to show/hide)the ozymandias master plan[close]
was kind of a weak plot device in the comics, and i wonder if that's going to come off as silly on film
I liked the idea behind the master plan, just not the plan itself. If that makes any sense.

I actually just went and bought it. And 2 volumes of Essential Doctor Strange.

I dig the Essential books. They're cheap! I was curious about the Tomb of Dracula ones. I don't know the comic. Any good?

i enjoy them but i have a tolerance for 70s horror comics.
check out the first volume and see if it's your cup of joe.
I read the book for the third or fourth time couple weeks ago, and I still hate Ozymandias's plan. But in a sense Ozymandias knows it's a silly\stupid scenario but thinks it's the best way forward and so does Dr Manhattan in the 'short term'.

I'm going to start it again tonight.
I hope they don't give short shrift to Hollis Mason's role
those are my favorite parts of the watchmen comics
There's absolute LXG? What is it, the first two volumes?
If you're up to it, sure.
I wish somebody would make a League movie.
Absolute Watchmen is hardcover, oversized, recolored, and all sorts of bonus material, including some script pages and the original pitch for the comic.

Recolored? what does that mean? Does it get rid of that lame purple hue?
Hmmm, do you have the Absolute Sandmans? I'm going to look for a copy of Vol 1 right now. Sandman is my favorite, and he could totally kick that cigarillo Batman's ass.
Sure, there have been changes. The catastrophic climax is different. Provocative bits, like a timely subplot about alternative fuels, have been added.

This is present in the original book as well - there's some subplotting about the changes that Dr. Manhattan's intelligence and research has brought to the world - in addition to realtering the geopolitical atmosphere, he's given us 8-legged turkeys and almost unlimited energy through cheap cold fusion. All of Gibbons' artwork reflects this - cars have fuel cells but don't have mufflers, etc. I'd imagine this detail has just been given slightly more emphasis, but since it's in the original comic, I'm not offended.

Sorry to butt in here but after slowly but surely buying the Sandman TPS with a few hardcovers thrown in, it's awesome to hear about these Absolute Sandman. I'm still missing a handful, so this will be perfect.
Man, I want to buy it so much but I am afraid to bring it up to the counter.i still haven't read that all the way through
Recent work
Moore plotted the six issue mini-series Albion for the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics. The series is written by his daughter Leah Moore and her husband John Reppion.
With Steve Moore he is writing The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic which is set to be published by Top Shelf at some point in 2010.[24]
It has also been recently announced that Avatar Press will be publishing a short graphic novel called Light of thy Countenance at the start of 2009 (which is based on a short story Moore wrote, originally published in 1995) and a horror comic series called Neonomicon.[25]
I've read Watchmen like two dozen times. I'm That Guy.
He's supposed to be a very nice guy.
He may very well be, but the thing is that he's also the person who made 300. I've not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn't particularly like the book 300. I had a lot of problems with it, and everything I heard or saw about the film tended to increase [those problems] rather than reduce them: [that] it was racist, it was homophobic, and above all it was sublimely stupid
that's not even out yet but i will probably break down and buy it because it's supposed to be out and out balls to the wall black dossier
and i am the only person i know who enjoyed black dossier for what it was, which was essentially just a world guide
but then as a kid i would buy obscure indie rpgs just to read about the worlds with no intention of ever playing the games.
shit, that looks... ehh. synder's style doesn't fit the material at all, i hope the film is more than just oodles of cgi and slow/fast-motion scenes and retains at least a fifth of the brilliance of the source material. and yeah, the costumes look way cheesy.
also, TDK was fucking brilliant. overall, i'd say a solid 9/10, with a few faults, but nothing that even remotely takes away from how its overall excellence.
I wouldn't've known last night, since they didn't attach any trailers with the IMAX showing.
shame about DC being cocks to Moore so that we can't get any more info about this series from the writer, however, Gibbons has a book coming out.OMG :hyper

(http://www.watchmencomicmovie.com/photos/071808-ew-comedian-big.jpg)I was wondering if they were going to leave this scene in. Is this movie going to be an R or PG-13?
I just took some pics of the Absolute version, but here's something on colorist John Higgins' site about the work he did recoloring the book:
http://www.turmoilcolour.com/abswatch.htm
Looking at the books side by side it seems he mostly made the work a bit more subtle and realistic, while also correcting numerous errors in the original print.
I've got some photos with pages with obvious differences, I'll upload shortly...
I was just looking online and apparently Absolute Watchmen is OOP. I couldn't find it in-stock anywhere and the only copies on Amazon Marketplace were $200. I wonder if they're going to reprint it to tie-in with the movie. I hope not because I've already got my copy. ;)
Ok so I just read what happens at the end of Tse's script and if that's the ending of the actual movie, then this thing is suddenly dead on arrival for me. Way to completely fuck up what made the final chapter so great

could i ask you to spoil?
well in PM so that people don't have a chance to read it by mistake or something
The aftermath is the important part to the whole thing.

which is what's ruined. if snyder follows that Tse script exactly, then this is what happens.I'm going to spoil it now so I can't be held responsible for accidental mouse hoveringspoiler (click to show/hide)dreiberg kills veidt[close]
something simple like that is all it takes to ruin the whole thing.
Anywho, the word from Snyder himself is/was that they were constantly working on the script until production began (the dudes who wrote Transformers were brought in at the eleventh hour. And before you vomit, they actually appear to be intelligent guys -- geeks at heart -- who I suspect might have brought the Watchmen script down to Earth); the word from the set is that Snyder is going for a panel-by-panel adaptation of the comic. So basically you can find the Tse script pretty easily but it won't give you an idea of how this movie is going to turn out.
Beside that, Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman came in and practically rewrote the entire screenplay.
They sent their work on over to Damon Lindlelof (a true fan at heart, and even used "The Freighter" as a key plot point in "Lost") and he loved it.
I also hope that they don't bypass the carnage - Hayter's script, post 9/11, replaced the alien with a magical bomb that didn't leave bodies or blood. Fuck that - the carnage has to be real and awful and violent and disgusting or the entire gambit doesn't work.
Capone: I'll probably see you there. Do you have any idea what [director] Zack Snyder will be showing?
MG: I would imagine, considering the trailer is going out with DARK KNIGHT. That makes good sense for Warner Brothers. So I'd imagine they're going to be showing extra material, otherwise people who made the effort to get down there will go, "I'm pissed. This is the **** we've already seen." I haven't seen anything myself really. I've had to looping, some re-recording of sound on one or two tiny scenes in it, so they've either cut me out of the movie or the original recording was as good as it needs to be. So I've seen so little, but the stuff I've seen has been "Oh, **** me! Wow! There's Bubastis; there's my ****ing cat!" Because there's very little CGI in it.
"The running time is about three hours right now, and what Warner Bros. don't really get yet is that I've made a three-hour arthouse film.":omg
He said elsewhere (I think the EW article) that the final running time will be 2.5 hours.
That's three hours minus Black Freighter, 4.5-5 with
that's pretty impressive ... I mean that's basically a 12 episode, 22-minute per episode miniseries. a bit compressed, but hardly unworkable
Have they said how long the Black Freighter thing is supposed to be? I wouldn't think it'd be longer than 20-30 minutes.
- The R rated version of Dr. Manhattan pointing at and exploding North Vietnamese soldiers. Very gory.
- Laurie pulling the tarp off of Archie with a look of amazement in her eyes.
- Rorschach at Blake's apartment, discovering the hidden closet filled with The Comedians weaponry and costume.
- The Minutemen photo shoot showing Sally Jupiter rubbing her eyes after the flash.
- Dollar Bill on the floor, cape caught in the revolving door with bullet wounds in his chest
- The Comedian's smiley face badge getting that first drop of blood on it during the fight with Adrian.
- Nite Owl's nightmare when he is kissing Silk Spectre as the nuclear blast goes off behind them.
- The Comedian's face slashed with the broken bottle at the bar in Vietnam.
- Dr. Manhattan's hand breaking through the ceiling at Karnack as Ozymandias ducks for cover.
- Dan sitting sullenly, in front of his costume closet, holding the Comedian's bloody badge.
There was no dialogue, just music. From a fan's perspective the movie looks to be so well done, no complaints here. Some of the scenes looked exactly like the comic, it was phenomenal! More later.
They could go with the alien angle, just alter it, because imagine how goofy that alien would look on screen considering how goofy it already looked on paperYeah that would be better, the alien angle also worked because the US and USSR had to team up to face a 'common threat' or something.
have huge ships crash and send out the pulse instead, with fake dead aliens inside, like extraterrestrial jihad
The most important thing about the footage was watching it that big I was really struck by how much the cinematography actually reminded me of the early ‘80s cinematography. While not in any way similar stylistically, the grain and depth of field really reminded me of BLADE RUNNER for some reason.
Great minds think alike :bow
Yeah, i doubt they're doing the balls naked shit. everything we've seen shows him wearing undies, right?
