I'm going to have to read the graphic novel because I just can't take those costumes seriously

I wouldn't argue that any of the costumes in Watchmen are cool, or iconic, aside from Rorschach's.  The whole idea of Watchmen is that it is a realistic take on superhero stories, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the illustrator's intent with some of the costumes to make them look a little hokey.

edit:  trailer is pretty awesome.

They used one of Smashing Pumpkins' songs from Batman and Robin... weird. Works really well, though.

They certainly got the look down.  The trailer doesn't show much aside from the look of the movie, but so far, so good.  Doctor Manhattan looks great.

Doctor Manhattan does look good.  I'm glad they kept him naked instead of giving him some weird thong.

I think I saw a thong in the Vietnam scene.

Man, I might have to eat some crow on this one.  I've been bad mouthing this pretty consistently and it now looks to be not only watchable but potentially good.  Which, considering the director, is pretty amazing.

I'm willing to accept that.  I'm all for nudity in movies, but having a naked blue man on screen for 2 hours wouldn't sit well in the US.

I forget, is The Black Freighter in or out?

I hate getting hyped for this, because I know it's unavoidable that so much will get cut out and I'll end up being disappointed.

Can't remember if Black Freighter is in or out.

And I still maintain that the best way to do the original material justice would have been an HBO miniseries thing.

Black Freighter is in extended cut for DVD I think.

edit - found it,

Quote
Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming comic book-to-film adaption, “Watchmen”, has announced a direct-to-DVD animated release of “Tales of the Black Freighter”. The DVD is set to hit stores five days after the March 6, 2009 theatrical release of “Watchmen”. “Tales of the Black Freighter” will also include a documentary-style film called “Under the Hood” which explores deeper into each of the characters’ backstories.

“Watchmen” is then scheduled for a DVD release four months later, along with an extended edition which will interweave the “Black Freighter” animated feature into the theatrical “Watchmen” cut. 22- to 26-minute webisodes called “The Watchmen Motion Comic” are also planned to be included with the release.

kind of lame, but better than nothing.

From Wiki:

Quote
Tales of the Black Freighter, a comic within the Watchmen comic, will be adapted as a direct-to-video animated feature, which will be released on March 11, 2009.[74] It was originally included in the script,[61] but was cut due to budget restrictions,[60] because the segment would have added $20 million to the budget, as Snyder wanted to film it in a stylized manner reminiscent of 300.[74] Snyder considered including the animated film in the final cut,[10] but the film was already approaching a three hour running time.[74] Gerard Butler, who starred in 300, voices the Captain in the film, having been promised a role in the film, which never materialized.[75]

The Tales of the Black Freighter DVD will also include Under the Hood, a documentary detailing the characters' backstories, which takes its cue from Hollis Mason's memoirs in the novel. The film will be released on DVD four months later, and Warner Bros. is also considering releasing an extended edition, with the animated film edited back into the main picture. In addition, a dozen short films (each around twenty minutes in length) will be released on the internet, using narration over the panels of the comic strip to familiarize newcomers to the story. These may also be released on DVD.

It's pretty cool--he's trying to get as much content out there as possible.
I also liked this:

Quote
The first cut was three hours long. In keeping the film tight, Snyder dubbed himself "the gatekeeper" of the comic's easter eggs, "while [the studio] conspire to say, 'No. Length, length, length. Playability.' [...] I've lost perspective on that now, because to me, the honest truth is I geek out on little stuff now as much as anybody. Like, people will go, 'We've got to cut. You don't need that shot of Hollis Mason's garage sign.' And I'm like, 'What are you talking about? Of course you do. Are you crazy? How will people enjoy the movie without shit like that in it?' So it's hard for me."

It sounds like he's more trying to appease fans than the unwashed, dumb masses.

I'm worried about folks who bypassed the graphic novel will dismiss the movie for that reason. I'm gonna show some non-comic reading friends to see what they say. For myself, it looks better than I expected.

Also, if I remember correctly, the "batman rip-off" look was very intentional.

this is in canon tho; he has a thong at that point of the book. he reduces his costume as the years pass as he feels more and more disconnected from humanity.

This is true.  I wasn't planning on going this weekend, since the thought of being surrounded a million Manabytes is a little nauseating.

But Manabyte will always be with us now.  In our hearts.

I'm worried because our free screenings usually don't have trailers. but if they skip the Watchmen trailer OUR COMPANY WILL RIOT

The WB screenings I get to go to usually have trailers.  Unfortunately, I think their screening for TDK is like a week after release.

I plan on catching a screening of Batman tomorrow morning- local theater starts showing it at 9 AM for some reason.  I figure the earlier I go the emptier the theater will be, so I'll let you sluts know what the deal is.  I also don't mind saying that I'm excited to see TDK because I reserve my petty bitching to Nintendo and actual terrible movies like, you know, Speed Racer.

I'll be honest, Triumph, when I do see it.  The fact is, I saw the first movie, felt it was a 7/10, and then come home to find out that it's been deemed the second coming by everyone on the internet (and not just on GAF).  Congrats, Nolan, you made a decent Batman movie, but it was by no measure great.

I'm not sure about Dr. Manhattan glowing that much, though I'm not sure how he can even look very natural (and is he isn't supposed to anyway).
It was mostly this shot that didn't work for me:
He looks like something airbrushed on the side of a van  :-\

Anyway, there were definitely a lot of things that I liked in the trailer.  The costumes still don't seem right, but aside from that and airbrushed Manhattan I definitely dug what I saw.  So many great shots I recognize from panels  :)
When's this moving coming out, next March?  Too long to be hyped, what is this, a videogame!
(oh snap could there be a watchmen tie-in game?  yikes  :-X)

The movie is good, not great.  The over-dramatic serious tone ruined it.  It's been removed from The Dark Knight.  Even the darker moments have humor in it.  It really is the best Batman movie and probably the best movie of the year (so far at least).  It's great.  Now get the fuck out of here with Batman!  This thread is about :bow Watchmen :bow2

does mamma mia have Fernando in it?  because if so you're spot on.
"I Have a Dream" – Sophie
"Honey, Honey" – Sophie
"Money, Money, Money" – Donna, Tanya, and Rosie
"Mamma Mia" – Donna
"Chiquitita" - Tanya and Rosie
"Dancing Queen" – Donna, Tanya, and Rosie
"Our Last Summer" – Sophie, Sam, Harry, and Bill
"Lay All Your Love on Me" – Sky and Sophie
"Super Trouper" – Donna, Tanya, and Rosie
"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" - Sophie, Ali, and Lisa
"The Name of the Game" – Sophie and Bill
"Voulez-Vous" – Cast
"SOS" – Sam and Donna
"Does Your Mother Know" – Tanya and Pepper
"Slipping Through My Fingers" – Donna and Sophie
"The Winner Takes It All" – Donna
"I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" - Cast
"When All is Said and Done" – Sam and Company
"Take a Chance on Me" – Rosie and Bill
"Mamma Mia" – Cast
"I Have a Dream" – Sophie
"Waterloo" – Cast
"Dancing Queen" – Donna, Tanya and Rosie (over the closing credits)
"Thank You for the Music" - Sophie (over the closing credits)

No Fernando.  Knowing Me Knowing You is also a notable ommision, but we do get Take A Chance on Me, which is my favorite ABBA song.  Actually, Lay All Your Love on Me is boner-inducing, too.

Pretty much. I think that the idea behind the plan is more pertinent than ever; though the plan itself is a bit goofy.

EXTREME SPOILERS

spoiler (click to show/hide)
9/11 gave us unfortunate real-world proof of the unfeasibility of Ozymandias' plan. Catastrophic, terrible events that "change everything" and bring the world together as one usually only last 6-9 months before everyone goes back to being petty, sniping, backstabbing, selfish, well, people. Ozymandias is an idealist, but it's realism that wins out in the real world. You can scare people onto the straight and narrow for a little while, but they always wander off.

Also I feel bad bringing up 9/11 in a serious manner re: Watchmen while always giving Nolan shit for it. :'(

the only essential books i bought were Dazzler and the first two Daredevils

i should get the Tomb of Dracula ones and also i'd like some of the X-Men ones simply for filthy nostalgia purposes

I dig the Essential books.  They're cheap!  I was curious about the Tomb of Dracula ones.  I don't know the comic.  Any good?

i enjoy them but i have a tolerance for 70s horror comics.

check out the first volume and see if it's your cup of joe.

I think I'd be cool with 70s horror comics.  I just wasn't sure whether it was even a horror series or if i was some sor tof comic book-y Dracula as an anti-hero thingie.

I read the book for the third or fourth time couple weeks ago, and I still hate Ozymandias's plan.
But in a sense Ozymandias knows it's a silly\stupid scenario but thinks it's the best way forward and so does Dr Manhattan in the 'short term'.

The trailer was hot but I guess hearing some dialog would be a good thing.

yeah, but i loved the book excerpts, and i know they gotta cut some things, and i get the feeling all that stuff is gone

there were rumors at the time (i bought watchmen off the shelf when it first came out) that alan moore and dave gibbons were going to do a minutemen series, and another rumor that moore was actually going to write an entire Under the Hood book

i would have bought both those in a flat second

There's absolute LXG?  What is it, the first two volumes?

there are two seperate ones

the first volume is long out of print and now sells for $300 +

the second volume, which is the one i have, contains in one oversized hardcover all  the issues, all the extras from the floppies (like the short story the papercraft, the boardgames and such) and then the second book in the slip case is the script book, which is really why i purchased it.

I found mine on ebay for like $65 shipped

here's one for $60 plus $9 shipping

They've recolored it to bring it up to date with modern coloring standards.  It looks smoother, I guess is the best way to put it.  It's subtle and not overdone or anything like that.

the pages are the good glossy kind.  not the odd paper kind like in abso watchmen.

the script book is awesome because not only does it include pencils and roughs, but also, each page that the script is for is reprinted in soft gray tones underneath.  it's subtle, but it's a neat effect.

i have all three of them

DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED BY THE FIRST ONE

i was a bit upset because beyond the recoloring they didn't do much else with what they had.  the extras were skimpy, the intro was kind of lame and i was really glad i hadn't spent MSRP to get it.

the second volume, however, is totally fuck awesome reprinting the entire Sandman Month sept 1991 promo stuff including commissioned but unpublished posters, pictures of some of the merch they did like the death watch, the first t-shirt, the making of the first sandman statue (weird inclusion, but neat), it also reprints the ENTIRETY of the pin up book Visions of Dream which were comic artist interpretations of Dream and co and finally contains the script and roughs for chapter 2 of Seasons of the Mists.

volume three raises the ante even more

collects the never collected predecessors to the pin up comics, promo Endless art, more merch (endless pewter figures?  ren fest exclusives or something?), the cain and able book ends and the concept sketches for them, the follow up to Visions of Dream the Endless Gallery (another collection of pin ups), an entire section on The Little Endless by Jill Thompson, the script notes and roughs of issue 50; Ramadan, and P Craig Russel's statuary design and it reprints the end notes from the original trades.

I can't wait to see what's in store for the fourth and final volume of Absolute Sandman

This is present in the original book as well - there's some subplotting about the changes that Dr. Manhattan's intelligence and research has brought to the world - in addition to realtering the geopolitical atmosphere, he's given us 8-legged turkeys and almost unlimited energy through cheap cold fusion. All of Gibbons' artwork reflects this - cars have fuel cells but don't have mufflers, etc. I'd imagine this detail has just been given slightly more emphasis, but since it's in the original comic, I'm not offended.

Recent work

Moore plotted the six issue mini-series Albion for the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics. The series is written by his daughter Leah Moore and her husband John Reppion.

With Steve Moore he is writing The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic which is set to be published by Top Shelf at some point in 2010.[24]

It has also been recently announced that Avatar Press will be publishing a short graphic novel called Light of thy Countenance at the start of 2009 (which is based on a short story Moore wrote, originally published in 1995) and a horror comic series called Neonomicon.[25]

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vol. III): Century [the third installment of Moore's Victorian-sleuthing comic, due out in April 2009] certainly stokes the imagination. Why make it span three different eras — 1910, 1968, and the present?

The extra content is decent but not amazing, I think it was included in an earlier hardcover printing, the Graphitti addition. It's not as great as it could have been if they could have actually gotten Moore involved, but that wasn't gonna happen.
I think there are some script excerpts, pinups/promotional art by Gibbons, and um, I can't remember what else.  It's not exactly jam packed but it's stuff that wasn't in the SC version I have.  There are 48 pages apparently.
Here's a description I found: "DC has reprinted everything that was included on the Graphitti Designs edition that has been out of print for years. Included are Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons thoughts and afterwords on producing the series, a sampling of the scripts, background information on every character and just about every promotional piece of art produced for this series, including overseas art and the portfolio album art."
I'm not sure I'd buy the book for the extras, but for I would for giant sized cleaned up Watchmen WITH extras :rock

I can take some pics tonight if you want.

It's a pretty great trailer and I think Snyder has proven himself as a great director (let's face it, the Dawn of the Dead remake would've completely sucked under anyone else and 300 was about as good as an adaptation of that could get).  Now he can prove himself as a great storyteller if he pulls this off.

The film looks very promising.  It angered me when I went to the comic book store on lunch break to here the employees nitpicking it.

I quite liked the Dawn of the Dead remake.  I am actually sure that is the reason we have Dead Rising and not the original.  300 wasn't that great through and I do think it could have been adapted better.  I'll give you one way to fix it: STOP ALL FUCKING SLOW MO.

First you can see it's too big to stand up on my bookshelf (I also have another shelf of comics under these two).  A couple photos are close ups of individual pages with the SC first then Absolute, and there are some significant color differences on a few of them.  Towards the end are some photos of the extra stuff.  There are actual spoilers in here!

I was wondering if they were going to leave this scene in.  Is this movie going to be an R or PG-13?

The fight scene looks kinda goofy and Nite Owl doesn't look very fat.  The other two pics are great.

I just took some pics of the Absolute version, but here's something on colorist John Higgins' site about the work he did recoloring the book:
http://www.turmoilcolour.com/abswatch.htm
Looking at the books side by side it seems he mostly made the work a bit more subtle and realistic, while also correcting numerous errors in the original print.
I've got some photos with pages with obvious differences, I'll upload shortly...

It seems like the made the Black Freighter stuff look a little more old, too.  I have to say I am impressed with the recoloring.  They struck a (probably rather tricky) middle ground between being subtle and providing something new for old fans.  I'm hoping the Sandman strikes a similar balance.

I was just looking online and apparently Absolute Watchmen is OOP. I couldn't find it in-stock anywhere and the only copies on Amazon Marketplace were $200. I wonder if they're going to reprint it to tie-in with the movie. I hope not because I've already got my copy.  ;)

I still doubt whether that's gonna be the ending though. Snyder has made a huge deal out of his loyalty to the source and if he ends it that way, he can expect a horde of furious man children hating him for all eternity. I found this

Quote
Anywho, the word from Snyder himself is/was that they were constantly working on the script until production began (the dudes who wrote Transformers were brought in at the eleventh hour. And before you vomit, they actually appear to be intelligent guys -- geeks at heart -- who I suspect might have brought the Watchmen script down to Earth); the word from the set is that Snyder is going for a panel-by-panel adaptation of the comic. So basically you can find the Tse script pretty easily but it won't give you an idea of how this movie is going to turn out.

Quote
Beside that, Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman came in and practically rewrote the entire screenplay.

They sent their work on over to Damon Lindlelof (a true fan at heart, and even used "The Freighter" as a key plot point in "Lost") and he loved it.

I hope this is accurate and this thing got a bunch of rewrites. They can mess with the cause of destruction all they want (as long as it's something outlandish/alien-like), but drastic stuff like that is pretty much a certain turn off for all fans.

I also hope that they don't bypass the carnage - Hayter's script, post 9/11, replaced the alien with a magical bomb that didn't leave bodies or blood. Fuck that - the carnage has to be real and awful and violent and disgusting or the entire gambit doesn't work.

Matthew Goode interview, confirms Bubastis is in :p

Quote
Capone: I'll probably see you there. Do you have any idea what [director] Zack Snyder will be showing?

MG: I would imagine, considering the trailer is going out with DARK KNIGHT. That makes good sense for Warner Brothers. So I'd imagine they're going to be showing extra material, otherwise people who made the effort to get down there will go, "I'm pissed. This is the **** we've already seen." I haven't seen anything myself really. I've had to looping, some re-recording of sound on one or two tiny scenes in it, so they've either cut me out of the movie or the original recording was as good as it needs to be. So I've seen so little, but the stuff I've seen has been "Oh, **** me! Wow! There's Bubastis; there's my ****ing cat!" Because there's very little CGI in it.

Normally a 3 hour movie is a bad thing for me.
In this case, it should be an even longer miniseries or something of that nature... so I'm gonna take this as a good sign that it doesn't have too much essential stuff cut out.
Unless the studio forces it (which I kind of doubt nowadays with all these overly long yet popular movies around).
Title: Re: Watchmen trailer

That's three hours minus Black Freighter, 4.5-5 with

that's pretty impressive ... I mean that's basically a 12 episode, 22-minute per episode miniseries. a bit compressed, but hardly unworkable

also, as genghis wrote earlier in the thread, there is going to be an Under the Hood documentary (based on the "book"), which I guess is around an hour long. So around 6-6.5 hrs altogether, more than enough time I think

I think it's about 90 minutes to two hours. It's being done as an animated feature, released to stores 5 days after the movie. While that decision was partially for reasons of cost, I think it will be a cool way of making the "comic within a comic" feel like it has a separate tone from the now-realistic main story. The "final cut" on Blu-ray/DVD will integrate the content into the movie.

yeah

and they also got new footage there, hope we can see that soon

Quote
- The R rated version of Dr. Manhattan pointing at and exploding North Vietnamese soldiers. Very gory.

- Laurie pulling the tarp off of Archie with a look of amazement in her eyes.

- Rorschach at Blake's apartment, discovering the hidden closet filled with The Comedians weaponry and costume.

- The Minutemen photo shoot showing Sally Jupiter rubbing her eyes after the flash.

- Dollar Bill on the floor, cape caught in the revolving door with bullet wounds in his chest

- The Comedian's smiley face badge getting that first drop of blood on it during the fight with Adrian.

- Nite Owl's nightmare when he is kissing Silk Spectre as the nuclear blast goes off behind them.

- The Comedian's face slashed with the broken bottle at the bar in Vietnam.

- Dr. Manhattan's hand breaking through the ceiling at Karnack as Ozymandias ducks for cover.

- Dan sitting sullenly, in front of his costume closet, holding the Comedian's bloody badge.

There was no dialogue, just music. From a fan's perspective the movie looks to be so well done, no complaints here. Some of the scenes looked exactly like the comic, it was phenomenal! More later.

I've heard that many times, just never knew the source. I can't listen to it without fake montages and random lines flying through my head

"he's a man"

"or is he?"

"what do you know about the CIA?"

"it was as if he could fly"

*mindblown*

Watched it again, and I really think that the first part of the trailer is pretty good, but the second part was absolutely ruined by Muse. I imagined Rorschach's voice as totally monotone. I'm fine with Dr. Manhattan's voice; I never really imagined it as god-like.

I'll probably end up liking this, but it definitely won't be the best superhero movie ever. The chance of that was kissed goodbye when Zach Snyder signed on to this.

This had better not be delayed.

But I was at a theater Monday night and they had pulled down all of the Watchmen character banners they had up :(
