Yeah, flemish part wanted a reform of the state at the new elections June 07 and a new balance between the flemish and french region, the french wallons fear a more autonomous flanders and wallonie (because they have high unemployment and rely on flanders (and EU) to send them billons of euros yet unlike Ireland there's hardly any improvement). The formation of a new cabinet took till march 08 and now it has resigned because we basically can't agree on anything anymore, specifically regarding a state reform, with wallons even wanting to annex parts of flanders in exchange for more autonomy of both regions.
Over the past decades we've basically become two separate people who have less and less in comon, yet some desperately want to cling to the old federal state model because they fear their own responsibility. The situation now gets us more polarized.

Look, you're just too damn small to be two separate countries. Europe already has a Liechtenstein, so you're just going to have to figure this shit out on your own or we'll bring you some American Brand Freedom. Wait, do you have oil? You may already qualify!

They have chocolate and beer; that's good enough.

We don't have any natural resources, we (our late king Leopold II) took all that shit (gold) from the Congo.

ugly situation by both sides and heaps and heaps of political cowardice all around. The steady stream of french expletives coming from the phone when my wife is talking politics to her friends from her hometown of brussels is extraordinary.
I really don't think you can split the nation due to the fact that both sides really have near equal claim to brussels and neither side is going to give it up. What you really need is new elections and a far more pragmatic governing coalition. CD&V leadership doesn't look like it's served anyone really well, not even the Flemish nationalists.

What we need is a confederal state model, where both regions are responsible for themselves so they can be governed more effectively and don't obstruct one another leading to statusquo and frustration. Belgium, a country of 10millon people has 6 governments resulting in a ridiculously huge bureaucratic state, everything has to be compromised so hard that we end up with a impentrable state structure where almost no one can get sense of, decisions that don't really do anything. We think differently on pretty much everything.
Either that or we'll split up cause nothing really ties us together and I don't think flanders will cling to Brussels needlessly when it comes to it, it's a money sink for us too. It's telling when everytime someone suggests splitting up, pro-Belgium supporters point towards Brussels...as if a 'problem situation' could or should bind a nation of two separate people together.
Besides, we can't have new elections because the Constitutional court ruled that the BHV situation (where wallons in a certain part of flanders can vote for wallon politicians) is against the constitution and needs to be solved. Any elections after july 07 are therefor void.
