What's New in Wii Dead Rising

Capcom explains what sets the Wii release apart.
By Kevin Gifford, 07/17/2008

We heard Wednesday that Dead Rising, one of the more memorable sandbox games on the Xbox 360, is coming to the Wii, but now we've got further details on the game translated directly from the Famitsu article that made the revelation. The new port, called Dead Rising: Zombie Sacrifice in Japan, will feature all manner of new features and expanded gameplay -- and as producer and director Minoru Nakai discussed with Weekly Famitsu magazine this week, it's all part of an effort to make the notoriously difficult game more appealing to the casual user base.

As Nakai puts it, Zombie Sacrifice came about following the success of Resident Evil 4's Wii port, which sold over half a million copies in the U.S. despite being only slightly enhanced from the GameCube original. Nakai also saw it as an opportunity to attract a new audience to his game: "The 360 version was hard to get to grips with, in a good way. You died a lot in the beginning, and you have to raise your level if you want to proceed in the story. It's a really fun game if you can deal with that, but I think some of the experience was a little rough for casual users. That's why we're adjusting the game to make it easier to play."

As part of that effort, Dead Rising's controls and method of storytelling are both going to see some revisions. The basic game is unchanged, of course -- you play freelance journalist Frank West as he infiltrates a zombie-infested mall, helps out survivors, and fights hordes of the undead all by himself. The story structure is a bit different from the 360 version, however: Instead of having your janitor friend Otis continually tell you about things to investigate via your transceiver, the game will proceed in a more traditional, less time-sensitive fashion. "In the Xbox 360 version, the story proceeded as time passed, and you'd get messages about how there are survivors at this or that location that you should check out," Nakai told Famitsu. "With this version, that aspect of the game is now treated as a series of submissions. As you advance through the main story, Otis will give you three or four submissions at once; when you finish those, the main scenario advances. This results in us being able to put a lot more story volume to the game."

In addition to a revised story structure, the Wii version of Dead Rising will feature new enemies and items, as well as a behind-the-shoulder camera system modeled after Resident Evil 4's. (Nakai noted that Frank won't be able to take photographs of things in the Wii version because that system doesn't work very well with this new camera.) This being a Wii port, of course, brand-new motion controls are naturally in the offing -- you'll press directions on the control pad to switch between weapons instantly, use an onscreen reticule to target enemies when you're wielding a gun, and even shake the Wii-mote around to ward off zombies or swing blunt weapons. "Basically, you use the Nunchuk to move and the Wii-mote to perform actions," Nakai told Famitsu. "You can press the A button to attack with your subweapon, but you can also attack by swinging the Wii-mote. That makes the attack stronger but expands the backswing -- sort of like regular and heavy punches in a fighting game."

Dead Rising: Zombie Sacrifice doesn't have a Japanese release date set yet, but development on the title (which sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide on the 360) is already well underway. Nakai's main goal here, as he told Weekly Famitsu, is not only to retain what made gamers excited about the 360 original, but also to open the game up to a new, more casual audience: "My brother is a casual gamer, but he's the sort of person who doesn't like it when the visuals are too intricate or elaborate -- he gets nervous about whether he's good enough to play it at all," he noted. "That was a very novel surprise to hear that from him. Looking at it that way, I wonder if Wii users are a lot more forgiving about the visuals of the games they play. Of course, we have lots of fans of the 360 version, so we're still aiming for a level of visuals that will keep them satisfied."

soooo now it's a linear hack and slasher with no photos and the graphics are simple because they scare away nongamers

You're far too accepting of Nintendo's goal of destroying the industry lately, Gillo.  I'm starting to think God might be trying to tell you something with all of your apartment tragedies...

I do find it amusing that the director's brother thinks that "he's not good enough" for a game with such good graphics as Dead Rising.

Wonder if he bowed profusely in apology when he picked up the 360 controller.

As big of a Dead Rising fan as I am, I do think that those changes would help those wimpy ass "gamers" out there play this game without bitching about everything.  I will probably buy it since I am emotionally and sexually involved with Dead Rising, however this will be more like a hand job than anything else.  I fully except a proper sequel to Dead Rising without any of this gay 'accessible' shit present.  Once that happens we can commence in the make up sex, and what a glorious event that will be.  And if this fucking whore does something like this again, I will kick it's ass to the curb.

So your saying their is hope this game could be fun yet.

To bad it wasn't 360 version - gameplay = 360 version 2 though.

better than a ps3 port i guess

are you fucking stupid? a wii version of dead rising that is not only graphically inferior, but has dumbed down gameplay is not good for us dead rising fans at all. why dumb it down in the first place? Because people complained about the difficulty in the first game. Why would they simply dumb the gameplay down in just wii version? They're propbably thinking if they make a Dead Rising 2 they should dumb that as well to appeal to the masses.

If the ps3 got a direct port, they'd get to experience full on dead rising. everyone does. it's the best game this gen. and that'd make it MORE likely we'd have a sequel that isn't for dumb shits.

Maybe they already have a Wii so the barrier to entry is $50 for the wii version vs $320 for the 360.

Wait, is it the stance of evilbore that a broken save system is a hallmark of quality game design?

It isn't a broken save system.  It isn't like Capcom is so stupid that they couldn't have multiple save slots.  The point is that you have to choose to do what you can within a set period of time.  Sometimes you might be able to do one and run fast enough to make it to another, but other times you have to simply give up on something to make something else.  It is brilliant with how it makes the player feel the consequences of their actions and having to worry about "oh, is this choice the right one?".  It isn't arbitrary either like the Mass Effect situations or the GTA4 situations where it you know there are two options and what those options are.  This is made even better by how short the game is, so replaying it three times is the same length of a lesser game, but each time you play is a different series of events.

or maybe it just reminds me of a pc game on absurdly low settings that nobody would actually use -- which is basically what it is

That is exactly what it looks like.  Textures on low.  Draw distance is on low.  Probably how long items/bodies stay in the world are on low.  And so on.

The best is that in that picture it looks like the mall has been taken over by the small group of people who enjoyed Too Human instead of a full out infestation of people.

It was the equivilant of a GTA demo where all they let you do was drive around the block in a van.

So how the hell do you gain experience in the Wii Dead Rising if you can't take pictures?  Just by saving people?  Christ, it'd take forever to get to level 50 that way....unless they fucked that over too.

Dead Rising is a game I'd definitely want to play and get more into (I own a copy, got it for Xmas '06)... but I'm so intimidated by it - seems extremely challenging, (I am terrible at 3D action games) and has the complicated save system, and has escort missions... seems like it'd be much too nerve-wracking for me. But what little I've played was great, really clever take on the whole 'sandbox' gaming concept.

the save system is not complicated. you just have to think when to save, and even then, knowing when to save is mostly common sense. ie, don't save in the middle of a mission when you have like 5 seconds left. Don't save during missions at all. Just save before the mission, do the mission, save after the mission. It's really quite simple. Also, there's a bathroom (where you go to save) every 5 feet.

the game can be challenging at first, but with a little effort you can get accustomed to the game easily. the escort missions I'll give you, but they're optional and they're far easier to do when you replay the game and are a higher level.

There are actually a total of 1100 points you can get with Dead Rising.  I don't know if they fixed the glitch or not, but you can trick it to give you the mass killings achievement twice.

I'm not gonna bother going through with it, but I was gonna say that you can get the achievement twice by not killing any enemy until the garage, then only reaching the enemy limit with the cars.  I wanted to see if you would actually go through with it.  I want to study achievement whores one day and write a thesis on it.

I can imagine getting repetitive stress injury from DR wii within the first hour, considering the amount of qte shit you do in that game (pushing a zombie off of you, moves like body slams) and then added shit like having to actually swing the wiimote when doing stuff like using baseball bats, hockey sticks;etc. That would get REAL tiring considering how much you have to do things like that in Dead Rising. I surely hope you don't have to swing the wiimote when you use katanas or chainsaws because fuck that would tear your arm right off, especially the mini chainsaws.

Are they going the Zelda thing where all you to do is flick your wrist to use these weapons or are you going to actually wind your arm up in order to use the baseball or hockey sticks?

I doubt it. They have screens up of the wiimote. This means you have to use the wiimote in order to do that move or use that weapon. Like jack off the wiimote to get zombies off of you.

The save system in Dead Rising was perfect for that type of game.  I still don't get why people wanted it to be changed.  It is the people that wanted it to be changed that think a survival horror game is all about some zombie popping out of a closet.  It put pressure on the player and forced them to allocate their time and face the consequences of their actions.  It is a short game and rewards players for replaying the game several times and giving them several different experiences.

But if you wanted to you could just treat it as any games with save points and only one save file.
