i like traditional RPGs, but i need a good story to get me hooked. i need character development, plot twists, dark themes, etc. no kiddy crap (no offense, i just don't like light-hearted stories).
the only RPG i own is world ends with you, which is awesome. i need more! which RPGs are actually worth my time?
-
...story?
Try asking here (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2).
-
sorry, i don't have a neoGAF account.
-
Final Fantasy IV would probably be a good place to start.
-
Ah. Well, here at Evilbore, we play RPGs for numbers, not story. 8)
Um...I don't really know what DS RPGs have a good story. I don't know if any DS RPGs have a good story. I am not trying to be facetious.
-
story ???
is that german for "loots"
synth?
I think that a "story" is a sort of hypothetical semantic framework that supports the loots and numbers. It's kind of like the 19th century's aether - its existence is implied by the loots and numbers that we see, though ultimately unprovable.
-
Does Castlevania count?
-
oh come on guys, you know, the MOTIVATIONS of each character and their personality, and the PLOT TWISTS that drive the action
-
I would begrudgingly (is that right) suggest FFIV but since you have a DS I would gladly suggest the Advance version.
-
i had played through (but not beaten) the gba version of ffiv. i don't know why, but it didn't really hold my attention too much. i got halfway through, then i quit. i was thinking of picking up the ds version, but i'm not sure if it will still hold my attention, or i'll just quit halfway again.
-
if you didn't like FFIV GBA, don't bother with FFIV DS
um...uh...story.
-
There's really not much that tops TWEWY... its pretty much the best game on DS. Dragon Quest 4 is in September, which looks to be a very top contender.
-
Yeah the DS RPGs are basically limited to story-less dungeon crawlers. FFIV is the best, I guess, since you already have TWEWY
-
xenogears.
-
xenogears.
there's no...oh, I see what you did there
-
Wait for DQ4
-
xenogears.
there's no...oh, I see what you did there
there IS a xenogears on DS

Well there's Sword of Mana for the GBA. It takes about 2 hours until you actually play the game so I assume there's a story there. Or you could pick up Etrian Odyssey play the game for a couple of minutes, close your eyes, create a story detailing your amazing adventures killing the evil poisonous crab and chopping wood, open your eyes and continue playing again.

OBLIGATORY "BE A MAN AND PLAY SOME ETRIAN ODYSSEY GAMES" POST!

there's a story
of a lovely human
who chose to be a cleric
and chose to worship helm
and chose six extra points in wisdom, two in con, and two in strength
there's a story
of a lovely elf
who chose to be a wizard
and chose five ponits of int, two in dex, and two in con
there's a story
of a not so lovely half orc
who chose to be a barbarian
and chose five points in str, three in con, and two in dex
now there's a story
of a lovely axe
with +3 enchantment and 1d6 acid damage
the barbarian took it
and chose power attack
-
helm rox

Andrew Vestal would really hate EB.

-

Very true. Even so, I loved the game and it's one of my favorites on the DS. The battle system is a little meh though, but sometimes it clicks and it's fun. It basically plays like a 2D MMORPG.
Mochi = love.
-
there were just so many good jokes in that game

i can't speak japanese!
i'd go for contact, i can find that for pretty cheap. but i'm also interested in etrian odyssey (ii) but have no idea how it plays. is it frustrating to have to pick a class? is it hardcore, extreme, and difficult (like it looks)?
-
If you like SRPG's, theres a pretty decent (at least as far as SNES remakes go) storyline in Front Mission DS. But yeah, most DS RPGs are of the grinding/looting variety, until the DQ series remixes come to the system.

When Mario and Luigi saved Peach, my jaw hit the floor. I was completely surprised because I thought this would have been the game when she finally bites it. What a twist.
